Negro

Council

National
Negro
Labor
Council
was
established
in
1951
to
combat
racism
in
labor
unions
and to
advocate
for
African
American
workers
. At its
first
convention
in
Cincinnati
in
1951
, the
council
had
difficulty
finding
a
hotel
that would
host
the
organization's
members
. In the
mid-1950s
, the
House
Un-American
Activities
'
Committee
(HUAC)
charged
the
council
with
holding
communist
sympathies
because
the
organization
protested
American
companies
'
treatment
of
African
American
workers
.
Under
pressure
from
HUAC
, the
National
Negro
Labor
Council
was
disbanded
in
1956
, but
it
provided
a
framework
for
civil
rights
leaders
in the
1960s
to
follow
.
