Description	Two photographs of spring peeper frogs show them with enlarged throat pouches, indicating that the frogs are producing their distinguishing call. The northern spring peeper, Hyla crucifer crucifer, is found in all of Ohio's 88 counties. It derives its name from the loud peeping sound males make during the spring breeding season. Females choose their mates based on the quality of the male's call. Despite their loud call, adult spring peepers average only one inch in length. They are easily identified by the X shape on their backs. Spring peepers have the ability to virtually freeze themselves during winter, when almost half of a frog's body can turn to ice and its breathing, blood flow, and heartbeat stop. The photographs measure 3" x 3" (7.62 x 7.62 cm).
