Their primary value would be for the inhalation of oxygen during the firestorm that inevitably rages following the blast. Fire draws oxygen from the surface air and as a result supplementary oxygen is often necessary to sustain life during the few hours that the firestorm burns in the area.
It has been suggested that a 244 cu. ft. cylinder of oxygen and equipment be installed for each four people using the shelter. Hudson has designed a unit complete with a mobile cart, oxygen regulator with four outlets, four adult size oxygen masks, two child size masks, a mouth-to-mouth resuscitation tube and two sizes of pharyngeal airways. The unit is practical, simple to use and requires a minimum of space.
