Dr A. Metz.
Dear Sir
It was only yesterday that I succeeded
in getting the number of the colored people in town
with any accuracy. Of the pure or nearly pure
blacks I reckon 15. adults and 16. children. Of the
Mulattoes 18 adults and 22 children. This does not
include the Pinns. Robertsons Gaskins, and others
out of town, but does include those in West Mass
=illon. In the way of Children two of the mulattoe
families have 6 each, and one 5, one 3. and of
the Blacks two of the families have 3 children each
and none of the rest over two
The limited experience I have had leads me to
differ somewhat [somewhat crossed out]with you in regard to the relative
mental [underlined] powers of the Mulattoes and blacks.
