Description	Two photographs document the eastern wood frog. The third photograph shows the frog's eggs, which are laid in the spring. Three final photographs show eastern wood frog tadpoles, which go through metamorphosis, a developmental change in physical form, to become adult frogs. The photographs measure 3" x 3" (7.62 x 7.62 cm). The eastern wood frog, Rana sylvatica sylvatica, is found in the eastern two-thirds of Ohio. It is easily distinguished by the raccoon-like mask across its face. It lives in moist areas but spends most of its life on land. It has the unique ability to virtually freeze itself during winter, when almost half of its body can turn to ice and its breathing, blood flow, and heartbeat stop. Females lay 1,000-5,000 eggs in the spring. Eastern wood frogs live approximately three years.
