All formal gymnasium class work at the Community Building will open for the season the week of October 8lh, acenrding to the report of the physical, committee. Nineteen different groups will be taken care of in <5,e schedule, most of which meet twice per week, making a total of 30 class periods scheduled on the floor each week. This together with the other various activities held in the gymnasium should make a busy season for the physical directors. The social committee of the Community Building is planning an annual Mardi Gras for North Canton to be given each year at Hallow'een.' The committee is hoping to get the consent of the City Council and the residents of West Maple street to hold the festival on West Maple street. Everyone is asked to hold open the date, October 30, for the big night, and to enter into the spirit of the affair. Watch The Sun for new;; of the Mardi Gras and be ready for a big time. The room was beautifully decorated in the* high school colors by the social committee of the school ahd the building. The activities of the evening were started with a grand march. "Various games were played throughout the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Graham of Canton were present and directed some of the games. About 10:30 a delicious lunch was served by the committee. The teams have been excellently coached, and both teams are confident of victory. In preparation for the contest the local players are keeping up active practice, and reports from Canal Fulton are to the effect, that the pigskin chasers here are not letting any .grass glow under their feet. Everything indicates that tlie game will be will worth watching. Elect Willaman-Captain The North Canton squad held a meeting on Thursday evening last week and re-elected Percy Willaman captain. Percy will play quarterback, a position in which he made a fine showing last year. The work of Dale Shannefelt as a fast tackle is relied upon to help the boys to victory in the opening game. Games To Be Played The schedule for the league games for this season was announced on Saturday. It has been arranged as follows for North Canton: September 28, Canal Fulton at North Canton. October 5, Greentown at North Canton. October 12, North Canton at Louisville. October 19, North Canton at Way- nesburg. October 26, North Canton at Minerva. .November 3, Hartville at North Canton. There may be a couple more games played outside of the league games. The newly-weds will live ir. their home in a lew .lays on North hill, Akron. o———— BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Hoover The soft ball season came to a close on Tuesday September 25, by all the teams participating in ait outing at the Hoover dam. One of the features of the evening was a game between the Sub-Assembly and the Business Men to determine who should hold first place. The game was won by the Sub-Assembly to the score of 11- 10. The prize winning teams were as follows: Sub-Assembly, 1st prize; Business'" Men, 2nd prize; Factory Office, 3rd prize. The prizes • given were: 1st prize, sweater coat; 2ml prize, fountain pen; third prize, leather belt and buckle. Fred Casady piesented tlie presents to the teams, making an appropriate speech, complimenting them on the splendid cooperation and spirit that was shown throughout the entire playing season. There were 130 persons present. Included with this group were W. H. Hoover, H. W. Hoover, F. G. Hoover, P. P. Hoover, H. C. Price and Judge Agler of Canton. Boss and Judge Speak After the prizes were awarded, Judge Aglet spoke to the boys along the subject of "Loyal Americanism." t'.r.d also explained why it was that tl-.e boys participating in these activities should be glad of their opportunity to be together, and work together both in play and in business. Capable judges have been secured. The program for the day will be made up of bait casting contests, trap and rifle shooting, concluding with an entertainment in the evening. Lunch will be served at f>:00 o'clock. A. C. Baxter, formerly chief of the State Fish and Game Bureau, a division of the Ohio State Department of Agriculture, will be the sneaker for the evening. Mr. Baxter is now executive secretary of the League of Ohio Sportsmen and well known among those in Stark county who are interested in fishing and hunting. The football season of 1923 will be officially opened in North Canton on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock when the Tigers will meet the Marlows of Akron on Tiger field in what promises to be a game replete with all the thrills incident to a contest between two teams said to be evenly matched in weight and skill. Schick, manager of the North Canton Tigers, isn't saying much when questioned concerning the brand of kicking, running and tackling the 'real lads are going to put up, but he grins broadly, and that smile means, "Count on the squad delivering." Elizabeth Schiltz, 13 years old, a pretty school girl of North Canton, won the first prize in the reventh grade ami also received first prize in the county contest for her es>ay against the use of tobacco. As a result of her ability she is richer hy $10. Bob Dixon had a paper on the same subject and he captured $10 in the high school contest and .?.r> in the county. The W. C. T. The social committee of the Community Building is planning an annual Mardi Gras for North Canton to be given each year at Hallow'een.' The teams have been excellently coached, and both teams are confident of victory. In preparation for the contest the local players are keeping up active practice, and reports from Canal Fulton are to the effect, that the pigskin chasers here are not letting any .grass glow under their feet. Everything indicates that tlie game will be will worth watching. Elect Willaman-Captain The North Canton squad held a meeting on Thursday evening last week and re-elected Percy Willaman captain. Percy will play quarterback, a position in which he made a fine showing last year. The work of Dale Shannefelt as a fast tackle is relied upon to help the boys to victory in the opening game. One of the features of the evening was a game between the Sub-Assembly and the Business Men to determine who should hold first place. The game was won by the Sub-Assembly to the score of 11- 10.
