Samples of al! the above articles are deposited in the office ol the Commissioner of Indian Affairs ; and it may be proper to remark that thoso of hardware, agriculluial implements, and northwest guns, arc entirely new. and of better quality than the articles heretofore furnished under lor-iner contracts. The proposals may be divided ioto four parts, viz : 1st. Blankets. 2d. Drygooda. 3d. Hardware, to include agricultural implements, &c. 4th. Northwest guns. The lowest competent responsible bidder will receive the whole or any part of Ihe contract according to the above scale, tho Department leseTVlng to itself tho right to determine whether the bidder is comptent aud responsible, or not The whole amount in money to be applied to the purchase of goods will he about f 90,000, but tho .Department reserves the right lo increase or diminish the quaniiiy of any of the articles named, or Bubstiiutc others in lieu thereof, or to re-quiro, at similar prices, such goods as may bo wanted Cf presents or other purposes, in the administration of the affairs of the Department. Goods of American manufacture, all other thinus being equal, w ill be preferred ; but as all the samples of blankets ami cloths are of foreign manufacture it will be necessary when a domestic article is bid for. that a sample ol it should accompany the bid, lo enable the Department to decide whether it is of equal quality wilh the samples to bo exhibited. Trie party proposing to supply the articles will make an invoice of all the items embraced in the above list, and alhi the prices, in dollars and cents, at which he or they will fur uish them, deliverable in New York, (or if the contractor prefers it, about one half of the quantity may be delivered m St. Louis, Missouri, free of expense to the Government.) on or before the 15th day of May next, assuming the quan-t ty of each article as specified in this advertisement, ind extending the cost, making an aggregate of the whole invoice constituting the bid. The goods will be inspected in New York (nnd in St. Louis, if any portion of them should be delivered there I by an agent ot the United States, who will he appointed by the Department for the purpose, nnd to ascertain the conlbrroity ol the articles purchased with the samples exhibited, when the contract shall he made, and wilh the terms of Ihe contract itself, which shall contain a clause that if the articles are not furnished within the time prescribed, or if they arc ol insufficient quality in the opinion of the agent aforesaid, and if within live days after notice of such insufficienc; , the party shall not furnish others in lieu thereof of the required quality, the Uniled States shall be authorized to purchase them of others, aud to charge any increase of price they may be compelled to pny therefor, to the contractor, who shall pay the said difference to the United Stales. Bonds will be required, in the amount of the bids, with two good sureties, the sufficiency of whom to be certified by a United States Judge or District Attorney, for the faithful performance of the contracts. Payment will be made alter the contract is completed and the delivery of the goods as albresaid to an agent of the Department, upon a duplicate invoice certified by bun. Bonds will be required, in the amount of the bids, with two good sureties, the sufficiency of whom to be certified by a United States Judge or District Attorney, for the faithful performance of the contracts.
