CHAPTER IV. While the Adjutant was yet reading, in n low anil solemn voice, the service for the dead, a fierce and distant yell, as if from a legion of devils, burst suddenly from the forest, mid brought the hands of the startled officers instinctively to their swords. This appalling cry lusted, without interruption, for many minutes, and was then, as abruptly checked as it had been unexpectedly delivered. A considerable paue succeeded, mid then again it lose with even more startling vehemence than before. Hy one accustomed to those devilish sounds, no distinction could have been maile in the tiro several yells that had been thus savagely pealed forth; but those to whom practice mid long experience in the warlike habits and customs of the Indians bad rendered (heir sliuuls familiar, at once divined, or fancied they divined, the cause. The first was, to their conception, n yell expressive tit mice of vengeance anil disappointment in pursuit perhaps of some prisoner who IiiiiI escaped from their toils; the second, of triumph nttd success in nil probability, indicative of'tho recapture of that prisoner. For many minutes afterwards the officers continued to listen, with the most aching attention, for a repetition nf tho cry, or even fainter sounds, that might denote either a nearer approach to the fort, or the final departure of tli c Indians. After the second yell, however, the wood', in the heart of which it appeared to have been uttered, were buried in as profound a silence as if they bad nsver yet echoed back the voice of man; and nil at length became satisfied that the Indians, having accomplished some particular purpose, bad retiretl once more in their distant encampments for the night. Captain F.rskino was the first who broke the almost brcnlhless stlcnco that prevailed among themselves. "On my life, Du llaldimnr is a prisoner with the Indians. He has been attempting li is escape has been detected, followed, nntl again fallen into their hands. I know their infernal yells but ton well. The last expressed their savage joy nt the capture of u prisoner; nnd there is no ono of ns misting hut lie llaldimnr." "Not n ilimbt of it," saitl Captain Illes-sington; "the cry was certainly what you desoribo it, and Heaven only knows what will be the fate of our poor friend." No other nllic.or spoke, for nil were oppressed by the weight of their own feelings, nnd sought rather to give indulgence to peculation in secret, than to share their impressions with their companions. Charles de llaldimnr stood a little in the rear, leaning his head upon his hand ngainst the box of the sentry, (who was silently, though anxiously, pacing bis walk,) and in an attitude expressive of the deepest dejection nnd sorrow. "I suppose I must finish Lnwsnn's work, nlthough I am but a poor baud at this tort of thing," resumed Captain Krskine, taking up the prayer bonk the Adjutant had, in hastening on the first alarm to get the men under arms, carelessly thrown on the grave of the now unconscious Murphy. He then commenced the service at the nnint where Mr Lawsuu bad so abruptly broken off, and went through tho remainder nf the prayers. A very few minutes sufficed fur the perfonnaneo uf this solemn duty, which was effected by the faint dim light nf the at length dawning day, and the men in attendance proceeded to fill up the grave of their officer. Gradually tho misls, that had fallen during tho latter hours of the night, began to ascend from thu common, nnd disperse themselves in air, conveying the appearance uf n rolling sheet of vapour retiring back upon itself, nntl disclosing objects in succession, until the eye could coihrncc all that came within its extent of vision. As tho ittlicers jet lingered near tho rudu gravo of their companion, watching with abstracted air tho languid mid almost mechanical action of their iaded men, as they emptied 'shovel niter shovel of the dump earth over the hotly of its new tenant, they were suddenly startled hy nn expression of exultation from Sir livernril vniioiori. "llv Jaoiter. I have pinked him," ho ex claimed triumphantly. "I knew my rille could not err: ami as for my tight, 1 lutv carried uwny too many prizes in target shooting, to have been deceived in that. How delighted thu old governor will be, Charles, to hear this. No uioro lecturing, 1 nm sure, for tho next six months at least;" and the young ollicer rubbed bis hands to gether, at the success of his shot, witlt its much satisfaction and unconcern for llic future, as if be had been in bis own native England, in the midst of a prize-ring. Housed hy tho observation of bis friend, Do Haldimar quilted his position near the sentry box, ami advanced to the outer edge of the ramnart. To him. ns to bis com panions, the outline of the old bomb-proof was now distinctly visible; but it was some time before they could discover, in tho direction in which Valletort pointed, a dark speck upon the common; and this so iudi.-liuctly, they could scarcely distinguish it with the naked eye. "Your sight is tptito equal to your aim, Sir Evornrd," remarked Lieutenant Johnstone, one of lOrskine's subalterns, "and both are decidedly superior to mine; yet I used to be thought u good rilleinati too, ami have credit for an eye no less keen than that of an Indian. Votl have the advantage of me, however; for I honestly admit I never could have picked on" yon fellow in the dark as you have done." As the dawn increased, the dark shadow of a human form, stretched at its length upon the ground, became perceptible; ami the officers, with one mi mil is voice, bore I I testimony to the skill and dexterity of him who bad, under such extreme disad vantages, accomplished the death of their skulking enemy. "Ilravo, Valletort," said Charles tic Hal-iliutar, recovering his spirit", as much from the idea, now occurring to him, that this might indeed he the stranger whose appearance had so greatly disturbed his father, us from the gratification he felt in the praises hotowed on bis friend. "Ilravo, my Hear fellow I'1 Then approaching, and in a half whiper, "when next I write to Clara, I shall request her, with my cousin's assistance, to prepare n chaplet of bays, wherewith I shall myself crown you as their proxy. Hut what is (ho mutter now. Valletort! Why stand you there gazing upon the com-moll, as if the victim of your murdcrou6 aim wins rising from bis bloody couch, to reproach you with bis death? Tell me, hall I write to Clara for the prize, or will you receive it from her own hands!" "Hid her rather pour her curses on my head; anil to those, De llaltlimar, add your own," exclaimed Sir Everard. at length. raising himself from tho statue-like position he bail assumed. "Almighty tiod," he pursued, in the same tone of deep agony, "what have I done! Where, where shall I bide myself!" As he spoke be turned away from his companions; nntl covering bis eyes with his bund, with quick and unequal steps, even like those of a drunken man, walked, or rather ran, along the rampart, ns if fearful ol being overtaken. The whole group of oiliccrs, nntl ( barlcs do Ilahliumr n particular, were struck with dismay at the lan guage and action of Sir Everard; nntl for a moment they fancied that fatigue, nnd watching, and excitement, had partially allectcil Ins brain. Hat when, after the lapse uf a minute or two, they again looked out upon tho common, the secret of his agitation was too faithfully and too painfully explained. What bail lit first the dusky mid dingy line of a half naked Indian, was now perceived, by tho bright beauts nf light just gathering in the east, to be the gay mid striking uniform of a British officer. Doubt as to who that officer was there could be none; for thu white sword-belt suspended over tho right shoulder, ami thrown into strong relief by the field of scarlet on which it ri'posed, denoted die wearer of this dis tinguishiug badge of duty to be one of the giiaril. If they could regret tho loss of such a companion as .Murphy, how deep and heart' ftdt must have been the sorrow they experi enced when they beheld the brave, getter oti, manly, amiable, nntl highly-talented Frederick do Haldimar the pride of the garrison, mnl the idol of In, faintly lying xtended a cold, senseless corpse, slain by the bosom friend of his brother!Notwithstanding- the stern severity nnd distance of the governor, whom few cireti instances, however critical or exciting, could surprise into relaxation of bis habitual slat, lines', it would have been difficult to name two young men more universally liked ami esteemed by their brother officers than were the De Hal- Miliars the first for tho qualities already named thu second, for those retiring, mild. winning manners, anil gentle affections, milled to extreme mnl almost feminine bounty of countenance for which be was remarkable. Alas, what a gloomy picture was now exhibited to the minds of nil! Frederick do 11 ilditiiar n corpse, and slain by the hand of Sir Everard Valletort! What but disunion could follow this melancholy catastrophe! nnd how coiil I Charles tin II il-tlimar, even if his htand nature should survive the shock, ever hear to look again upon tho man who bad, however innocently or unintentionally, deprived him of a brother whom he adored ! These were the impressions that passed through the minds of the compassionating officers, as they directed their glance alternately from the common to the pain and marble-like features of the younger Do Hal-diui'ir, who with parted lips and stupid gaze continued to fix his o)es upon the inanimate form n( his ill-fated brother, as if the very faculty of life itself had been for a period suspended. At length, however, ivhilu his companions watched in silence the mining workings of that grief wliie.lt they fear ed to interrupt by ill-timed observations, even of condolence, (in death-liku hue, which bail hitherto suffused the usually ulnoiiiing cnecK ol mo young ollicer, was succeeded by n llusb of tho deepest dye. while his eyes, swollen by the tnlu of blood now rushing violently to his face, appeared to bo bursting from their sockets, Thu shock was more than his delicate frame, exhausted as it was by watching and fa tigue, could bear. He tottered, reeled, pressed bis hand upon his head, nntl before any ono could render him assistance, fell senseless on the ramparts. During tho interval between Sir Everard Valle'.ort's exclamation, nnd tho fall nf Charles tie II thliinar, tho men employed nt the gravo had performed their duty, nntl were gazing with mingled astonishment and concern, both on tho body of their murder ed ollicer, and on tho dumb sccno ncling arniiud them. Twit of litem were now dispatched for a litter, with which they speedily reappeared. On this Charles de llaldiiuar, already delirious with tho level of intense excitement, wits carefully placed, and, followed by Captain Blossington mid Lieutenant Johnstone, borne to ids apartment in thu small range of buildings constituting the officers' barracks. Captain Ers-kiue undertook thu disagreeablo office of eouiiiitiuicatitig these distressing events to thj governor; and the remainder of tho of-licers onco more hastened to join or linger near their respectivo companies, in readiness for tho order which it was expected would he given to dispatch n numerous party of the garrison to secure thu body of Captain do llaltlimar. Oil APT Kit V. The sun was just rising above the horizon, in nil that peculiar softness of splendor which characterizes tho early tlnys of n licit run in America, ns Captain Krskine led his company across tho drawbridge that coiniiiiinicntt'd with tho fort. It was the lir.-t time it had been lowered since the investment of tin; garrison by tho Indians; and as Ilia t!u!l and rusty chains pertiiniied their service with a harsh nntl tfrnt inir sound, it seemed as if nn earnest were given of melancholy boding. Although lite distance to ho traversed was entail, the- risk tho parly inctirrcl was great; liir it was probable tho savages ever on tie! nlort, would not fuller them to cll'ect their object iiniiiidestetl. It w ns perhaps singular, nntl certainly contradictory, that nn ollicer of the acknowledged, prudence and Inrctliniighi ascribed to the governor qualities which in a groat degree neutralized his excessive severity in Hie eyes of his troops should have hazarded lite cli.inco nl'linving his gar rison cnleelilod by the destruction of a purl, it not ol the whole, ol the company appoint ed to this dangerous duty: but with all his severity, Colonel do llahliutar was not without strong nll'ection lor his children. Tho feelings of the father, tltereliire, in n great degree triumphed over the prudence of tho commander: nnd to shield the corpse ot Ins sun Iroin t lie indignities which he well know would be indicted on it by In dian barbarity, he had been induced to nc- cede to the earnest prayer of Captain Kr- skine, that lie inioht be penniUed to lend out Ins company for the purpose ol'securing the busty. I.vory means weie, however, taken to cover the advance, nnd insure the retreat ol the detachment. 1 ho remainder of the troops were distributed ulong the renr ol tho ramparts, ilh instructions to lie lint on their faces until summoned by their oiliccrs from that position; which wos to bo done only in the event ol close pursuit from the savages. Artillerymen were also stationed nt the several cuiis tlmt ll-inkei the rear of the fort, and necessarily com-1 mantled both the common nntl tho otttskirt of the forest, with orders to lire with grape-shot, nt a given signal. Captain Krskine's instructions were, moreover, if attacked, to retreat back under the guns of the fort L-hnvly nntl In good order, nntl without turning his hack upon the enemy. Thus conliileiitof support, the party, nfter traversing the draw bridge with fixed bayonets, inclined to the right, ami following the winding of the ditch by which it was surrounded, made the sonn-circuit nf the rampart until they gained the immediate center of tho rear, nnd in n direct line with the bomb-proof. Hero their mode of advance wns altered, to guard more ell'ectual-ly against the enemy with whom they might possibly h.ivo to contend. The front and rear ranks of the company, consisting in nil of ninety men, were so placed ns to leave space in the event of attack, of a portion of each wheeling inwards, so ns to present in an instant three equal faces of a square. As the renr wns siilliciently covered hy the cannon of the fort to defeat nny attempt to turn their limits, the mnno'iivro was one lint enabled them to present a fuller front in w hatever other rpnrter they might bo attacked; nnd bail ibis additional ndvnntnge, that in the nilvauee hy single files a nar rower trout was given to tin) aim ol the Indians, who, unless tliey tired in nn oblique direction, could only, of necessity, bring down two men the jeading files) nt n time. In this order, nnd noxiously overlooked by their comrades, whose eyes alouo peered from nbovo the surface of the rampart on which they lay prostrate, the detachment crossed tho common; ono rnnk beaded by Captain I'.rskin", the other by Lieutenant Johnstone. They hnd now npproacht-tl within a few yards nf the iiiiforliinat ! victim, when (Japtnin Krskine, commanded n halt of his pin v; nnd two files were de tached froin thu rear of each rank, to place the body nn a litter with which they had provided themselves. He nnd Johnstone also moved in the same direction in advance of the men, prepared to rentier assistance if required. The corpse lay on its laecnud in no way despoiled of any of its glittering habiliments; a circumstance that too well eonliriiietl (hi) ftet of lie llaldimnr 's ih'.llli hiving It 'en accomplished by the ball from Sir Kvernrd Valletort 's rille. It appeared, however, tho ill-fated nlliecr hid struggled much ill the ngonies of tleiilh; for the left leg wns drawn up intuitu unnatural state tl coitl met ion, mid the right hand, closely coinpressi'il, grasped a quantity ol grass and soil, which bail evidently been torn up eir very ears, and in tho next instant morn than a hundred dark and hideous snvn- s stirangsiiuultaneoiislv to their feet with in tho bomb-proof, while every tree along the skirt of tho forest gave back the tower ing lorn) of a warrior, hach of those, in addition to bis rille, was arm.'tl with all those destructive implements of warfare which render tho Indians of America su formidable nntl so terrible an enemy. ".taiiti to your arms, men, shouted Cnn- tain Krskiuo, recovering from his lirst unci unavoidable, though but momentary, surprise. " First and fourth sections, on your lit nnd hill backwards wheel: Uuiclt, men, within the square, lor your ives." As Ik; spoke, ho ami Lieutenant Johnstone sprang hastily back, and in time to obtain admittance within tho troops, who had ra pidly executed the man i .u rc commanded. Not so with Mitchell nnd liii' companions. On tlin first nlnrin they had quilted the body of the mutilated officer, and flown to secure their arms; but even while in lb" net of stooping to like lle'in up, tliey hail neen grappieil by n powerful nntl vindictive foe; and the lirst thing tliey beheld on re gaining their upright position, wns a dusky liiiiiiin nt the side, ami a gleaming tomahawk Hashing rapidly round tho bead of each. Fire not, on your lives," exclaimed Cap tain Krskine hastily, as he saw several of the men in front levelling, in tho excite ment of the moment, their muskets nt the threatening savages. "Prepare for nlliick," he pursued; and in the next instant each mini dropped on his right knee, and a barrier uf bristling bayonets seemed to rise from tho very bowels of tin earth. An note. I by the novelty of'tho sight, tite bold nnd daring warrior, nlthough still retaining tlieirhri grasp of the unhappy soldiers, were lor a moment diverted liuin their bleody pur pose, nntl temporarily suspended the quick anil rotatory motion ol their weapons. Cap tain I'rskino took ndvunltige of this pause to seizo the halbert ot one ol Ins sergeants to the extreme- point of which ho hastily nttaelieil a white pocket liandkcrcliict, that was loosely thrust into the breast ol hit uniform; this ho waved on high three seve nil times, nnd then relinquishing the hal bert, dropped ulsu on bis knee within the squnrn. "Tho dog of a Hagnnaw nsks for mercy," snid a voice from within the hotnh-proo!', and speaking in tho dialect uf the Hla.vas. "Ills pale ling bespeaks the quailing; of his heart, n ml his attitude denotes the timidity of tho hind. His warriors are like himself; anil even now upon their knees they call upon their Matiiloii to preserve them (rout the vengeance of tho red-skins, lint mercy is not liir dogs like these. .Now is the time to iiinko our tomahawks warm in their blouil; nnd every head that wo count shall be n scalp upon our war poles." As lie censed, ono universal nntl portentous yell burst from the limd-likc band; nnd again the weapons of death were fiercely brandished around the heads of the stupilied soldiers who had fallen into their power. "What can I hoy bo about!" noxiously exclaimed Captain Krskine, in the midst of this ileal .'iiing chiieir, to his siiballern. "Uuiet, man; damn you, quiet, or I'll cut you down," ho pursued, addressing one of his soldiers, whoso impatience caused him to bring bis musket half up to the sltould"r. And again he turned bis head in the direc tion ol thu fort: " I hank (lod, here it comes nt last, 1 feared my signal had not been noticed." CHAPTER IV. As lie censed, ono universal nntl portentous yell burst from the limd-likc band; nnd again the weapons of death were fiercely brandished around the heads of the stupilied soldiers who had fallen into their power.
