Iu title age of transmigration, and amongst a people as nomad io aa we are, a trip of several huudred mile, iu any dlreo tion is a matter of bo partioular moment A passage, however, over the Use of the Central Ohio and Baltimore and Ohio rail ways, at this time presents many interesting phases sot met with on other routes. The latter Hue especially, along which eo many noted events of the late . war ooour red, and which has been almost a "sealed book" to travellers the last four years, aside from tbe grand scenery through which it passes is unusually interesting. Running up the western slopes of the AUexhenies with the speed of the bird, we meet the morning just at the mountain nates to tho "Qreat Meadows." . The day opens in mist, and the olouds rest dear down on tho summitaof -'Laurel Ridge" and the distant peaks -of "ureat Aorth Moun tain." Bummer lingers here aa it does own in the Soiotoand Muskingum valleys. The oattla in the "Glades" feed upon pas ture as fresh as in June. As yet no lrost has marred the universal green. Even the sensitive Sumach, and the Rhododendron and Sugar Maple look as lusty as in full spring-time, and the bright green ebeatnut- burrs look aa if they never would get ripe, l'he descent into the Atlantic slope presents no variation from tho western side of the mountains. Coutinuat showere and a very unusual 'degree of heat give to the landscape a freshness truly remarkable for September. . .. ., BIOONSTKUCTIOH. , . ' All along the route are to be seen the remains ol military oamps, the half-consumed debris of once handsome bridges, empty "block-houees" and louesome ions, overgrown with weeds and used as cattle pens. The people have returned to their nomee nuieu luny reft, vu abu. fe -j-m" .hvi. country, and very lair crops nave been raised in most of ins country, me great' est desolation prevails around Martinsburg aud iiarpei'd Ferry. Here the traoes ol the recent confliat are everywhere appa rent. Through all (he rieh valley of the lower rlbenaudoah, once sa. fruitful and m.gnifioent in appearance, no aiguof oulti-vnuon is seen, and tha farms seem to have been obliterated, The rebels, a. a general thing, haveoome back some penitent and disposed to behave themselves, but a large number as full ol mischief as ever. Une remarks In passing the almost total absence of negroes, that formerly swarmed on these plantations. Tbe whites look exceedingly ihabby in appearance, and considerably used up. Where an individual sports a genteel dress it is eaey to peroeive tbat it is very men in style aua apparently jusi from tha store. And yet even hero, there is a dawn ol a bettor day coming. The signs of "reconstruction" are everywhere apparent. Here and there men can be seen repairing the stoue fences torn down to build up oamps, or to permit the rapid pas sage of batteries of artillery. An occa sional new house makes its appearance, and at Martinsburg tbe railway company is hard at work rebuilding its magmhoent. shops and locomotive works, whioh were desiroyea Dy etonewaii Jaoaaon at aa eariy stage of the war. . i - BAILWAT BRTEBrBISE ..: But perhaps in nothing is the persistence and energy of the American cbaraoter more clearly shown than in the management of the Baltimore and unto- Haiiroad ttsell Running just along the border and ottering the greatest faoilities to the Government at Washington in prosecuting tna war, it eems to have been the object of speoial vengeanoe to the rebels. Its bridges, some of them very costly, have for a distance of over two hundred miles, been repeatedly destroyed. A great portion of the track for the same distanoe has been torn up and destroyed. During the march of . Lee into Mary land, preceding tne battle or Antlelam Btonewall Jaokion, with the skill of civil engineer and with .the hosts of the rebel army undertook to obuerate totally between thirty and forty miles of it. He burnt the ties, twisted the rails, blew up oulverta and bridges and filled up the outs, so effectually than he bossled not another train would ever run over the road until "the Confederacy was established." The splendid bridge over the Potomao at Harper's Ferry waa twice destoyed and twioe replaced. And yet to-day the passenger ia conveyed from the Uhio river 10 uauimore anu nanning-ton in a little over twenty hours, along a line of road crowded with freight trains, with an ease and certainty never before surpassed. New Iron bridges replaoe the former wooden ones, and the rsturn of psaae has enabled the manager, to put upon the road new oars of ths lateet improved style Heine: Ihs natural outlet of oentral Ohio, In dianu and Illinois to tide-water, the complete restoration of this road to its wonted operations win oo a souroa oi congratulation to the people of those dlstriols. ins oariToi. A vsry respectable proportion of those firms have correspondents here, or refer, by permission, to some of our foremost business houses. These, too, are significant eiroumstances, indicative of an encouraging renewal of old commercial relations among the mercantile claa.ee of all leotions of the country, j i The South is sending us in exchange for what it needs from us, unusually large quantities of cotton, liberal amounts of tobacco, rice, naval stores, lumber, staves, shingles, &c , which are being marketed here at very remunerative rates. Tha receipts of cotton alone at this port during the year ending on the lit Inst., reached 400,901 bales, or a weekly average of about 7,700 bales. Since the 1st Inst, the weekly average has riaen to about 26,000 bales.. Compared with the reoeipta of ootton al New Orleans, before the war the greatest cotton market in the world. The number ol bales received at Now York exceeds the number received at the former plaoe by nearly 129,000. Of the oollon received in N.w York in the last eommeroial year, 64,-'218 bales only were exported as shown by ths foregoing table, while 276,084 baits were taken out of this market by domestic spinners, for immediate use at home; illustrating the prime value of the home d-imand. The quantity taken from this port lor consumption, the past year, showed an inorease over tbe quantity taken in 1868-64 of 200 bales per week, and was l,b70 bales per week more than in 1802-68. Of the shipment of ootlon from New Orleans, in tbe year ending with Sept. 1, 18. 116, 144,190 bales were to New York; agalnsl 20,814 bales to all other domestic porta, and t,H4i Dales to foreign ports. Since iho 1st tnst., tbe reoeipts of ootlon at the port of New York have been so iar iu exoess of ths reduotlon -of supplies by purohasss for homo uso and export, that it il now estimated that the available slock here is about 100,000 bales. A year ago, it was not the twentieth part of this amount. Estimates of the amount of ootton remaining in ths Southern Stales at the close of the war, take an extremely wide range, averaging about 1,000,000 bales, now valued at over two hundrod million dollar, "in legal tendor," on Ihe lowest ba sis of calculation. Ahis is a very respecta ble basis oa whioh to oommenee business anew. It satisfactorily explains where the hulk of the monoy eomes from, whioh Ihe South is using to liquidate old obligations, and lo pay cash lor most of what it now buys of us, Very many of the cities and towns of the South will pay dollar for dollar on their ancient obligations, and Ihe business men showing an en?rgy that Is truly com- mendable, in reorganizing Ihelr country financially. The Cleveland llertli says that about midnight on Thursday night a palice officer named Frank, at Suspension Bridge, was summoned to put down a disturbance at a house of ill-fame.
