Sherman's army says the loss of officers during this oampaiga has been fearful. The fighting, indeod, since the oauipaign opened, nas boen almost continuous. A mnrvoUmo aeries of battles, on great Bcale, have been lougnt and every step 01 progress nas been won by Bore struggles and a deplora ble effusion of blood. The difficulties of fighting forward on Grant's line have been graphically depicted by various pens. Those necessary to bo overcome on Sher mans line nave been scarcely loss formida ble. A rough, 'rolling, often mountainous and densly wooded roglon, affording capital facilities for entrenchments, and for sharpshooters to ensconce themselves, has been struggled through with indomitable porBoveranco every m'le a skirmish, or rine pit, or concealment or some Bort, wnenoe the deadly missle is issued to maim or destroy. In spite of all, the advanoe of our stalwart columns has been steady, though at times necessarily slow. The objeetivo, Atlanta, has been kept fixedly in view, anu daily brought nearor. The whole distance between Chattanooga and Marietta has been toilfully but hopefully traversed until now but a few miles intervene between our con quering army and the great prise they are aiming to grasp. . An AtTectlnir Incident Two officers, wounded in the battle be fore Petersburg, were going home last Iri- day by tne i.ne route, wnen the train neared Oswego, a well dressed lady, aceom- Danled by a child and gentlemen, entered the oar and took a seat in front of them. As the officers talked over the recent gagements at Petersburg, informing each- other of the various acquaintances who bad fallen, one remarked : "mere was uapt. Warwick, of the latit New lorK, as brave a fellow as ever lived ; he was shot through Ihe head and instantly killed." The lady referred to immediately sprang from her seat, and throwing up her hands exclaimed, Oh. don't say that 1 no was my nusband 1 and then burst into an agony of tears. This was the first intelligence she bad received ofhor husband's dcntlr. Tho ohild with her was hit daughter, and tho gentleman his brother. This lack of discipline is so general throughout tha reb ol armv in ueorgia, mat itscommanaors nt- ways avoid a battle unions in some strongly fortified nositlon. Une of tne liith New York Artillery a Seneoa Indian I believe, from tht western part of the 8tate undertook, on a wagor, to bring in alive a rtbtl sharpshooter, who was percn ed on a three in front of our line, consid erably in advance of his own. His manner or accomplishing tint was as ingenius at successful, and rivals the "deviltry" of any of the JLeauier-Btooking redskins, rroouri ins a quantity or pint Doughs, no enveloped eimse'f with them from head to foot, to- Inching tnem securely to a branon which he la.hed luuffthwi.a to hla bodv. Thus prepared and with mus ket in band, oonceaied likewise, he stole by almost imperceptible movements to beneath the tree where the tharpshooter was lodged. Here he patiently waited until his prey had emptied his piece at one of our men, when he suddenly brought his musket to bear An the "reb," giving him no time to reload. The sharpshooter wat taken at a disadvantage. To the demand lo oome down he readily assented, when the, Indian triumphantly marched him a prisoner into camp and won nit wager. la?-Tht New York Tribune has the fol lowing piquant allusion to a new competition, started in Washington: 1 "int MSxpreu it unnappy again, and ruth- es frantically into .'fane type to inform a disgusted world that in Washington Ihe oolored boy (meaning nigger) thas driven the white thoe black clean off the eouuet Shade of Day & Martin, what are wo coming lo, wnen mile nigger boys compete witnwnite Americans in blacking boots? There were very few dry eyes in that oar during the rest of tht journey to Elmira. .Vew 1'ori Commercial Ad- I'trtiter. ttafA letter from Marietta, which is published in the Atlanta Confederacy, oon- taing tne following statomeni: Th.r. la but little, diaclollne In our cavalrrr tho number of atragglera acatl.red through th. country from that command teatihea to the (act, I know that nortueaai ueorgia laauaoiuieiy nutm viw Infantry deaortere and cavalry atragglera. This lack of discipline is so general throughout tha reb ol armv in ueorgia, mat itscommanaors nt- ways avoid a battle unions in some strongly fortified nositlon. But Sherman will soon ho ablo to put ibis to the test by arriving at Atlanta, which, if the rebel ooinmauder means to fight ut all seriously, no must do. fend, as its loss would be a very heavy blow lo him, and be followed by the overrunning of Georgia. jjgf Uneducated persons, and even the rudest, often succeed in illustration where the thotighttul and ouitivatea inn. n otrn nig instance is given to us in the oase of .oorn. whose head was examined by iilirenologist. How to discover where int renei guns were placed waa now the question. All OLhcr offorta failing?. Sherman at last uncovered the rebel batteries by the help ui an ingenious practical joke. When oompleted, nt was distinguishable to a casual observer from the surrounding foliage, and resembled a tree is olossly as it was possiblt for his really artistio effort to render him. An officer of the Kearearge in a letter tn the Boston Traveler, describing tne late naval oombat, concludes with the following touching paragraph:uur oommanaor, vaptain wwbiow, after the action was ovor, and during the afternoon, had all hands mustered on the quarter deek, and there wat offered solemn prayer and thanksgiving to God, who had given us so signal a victory.
