Event of the Last Three Days GREAT BATTLE ON FRIDAY. Important Slrategetlc Movement. EVACUATION OF WHITE HOUSE Tbe Enemy Severely Repulned, General McClellan's Army Massed Nouiu. oi tne cnicHahominy. Tbe Enemy Drawn Out of his , InlrencbmentS. . ., , ONWARD TO RICHMOND t (t.'virreepndcocv of the Baltimore American.) White House, Saturday, June 28. Ths events transpiring at this point, and in theaimy before Richmond, during the past four days, have been of suoh varied oharaoter and Ihrilliug . Internal, that 1 scaroely know where lo oommenoe or ood lo in general read. er. Many who were eye witnesses to these movement have fled off panio-striokeo, fully oonviooed that the whole army before Riohmond has been destroyed, and that Oeneral MoClellan baa be ea outwitted, out-generaled, out flanked, and "driven to the wan, where be promised to place the eusaar. .-A vaeoaiion of 'White House was lo them an inexplicable Bad" '(hre'arVlr ?.!'X01'11' condition of facts; but week, they would have discovered' lbat Iho work of avaouation was silently and surely progressing before any of the fighting on tbe right wing, as early as Tuesday, and that large numbers of vessels had left the York and Pamunkey rivers, and were moving rapidly around to a new bas:s of operations on Ihe James river. 1'hoy might also have observed that all oivilians were forbidden to approach the front as early as Tuesday, under any pretence whatever, and that the immense stores of supplies at Dhpatch Ktntion had been steadily reduced for a week, until the last box of crackers, barrel of beef and bale of bay had disappeared before tho great Contest on Friday, which loft the way oren for the enemy to ap proach that point, which I have every reason to believe was uesisncaiy wieuueu vj ueuerni McClellan to be the mouth of the empty trap into whioh they were being led, and, as I hope aud believe, io their entire route and discom filure. ' Beforo proceeding to lb narrative of events as they havo occurred in tbe vicinity of White House during the past few days, I will briefly slate that tho whole movement of Uen. MoClellan, so fur as Ihe ohanging of his lines is con-oerned, aud in reality the making of bis left wing his right wing, and withdrawing his right wing lo rest near rjavago Station, at the railroad brigdo across the Chickahoniiuy, the enemy io rush to his oovctcd feast at the White House, whore he fouud nothing but an empty platter. Whether this movement is good or bad, or what may be intended by lien. McClellan to be accomplished by it further than throwing his left on (o J times river, and supporting a land attack on Fort Darling, il is impossible at present to say, A day or an hour may decide this point. 1 will merely proceed to a narrative of events ai they ocourred at Whito Hottso up lo Saturday at noon, ombraoing such statements as reaohed us from Ihe battle-hold on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. WEDNESDAY- AT TUB WHITE I10USU. At the Whilo Houso oo Wednesday matters were progressing as usual with tho exception that thoro had been a chock in ibo landing of stores of all doscrlplions, whilst Ihose on the laudingt) were boing rapidly loaded in wagons and moved off towards the left flank. Several slcamors with largo strings, uf vessels laden with forage and subsistence had also been sUrlcd down tho river with orders to proceed to Lily l'oint on the James river- Ills reversal in tut) course ot transportation oocjsioiicti 'con siderable comment and speculation, but was as-oorluiued lo bo iho fulbllmeut of an order di rect from General MoClellan. Some supposed it to bo iniouded for the supply of a portion of General liumside's army winch rumor said bad reaohed Iho James river to co-operale with him. An crdor was also received from headquarters early on Wednesday lo prohibit any ono from coming torward to the Hues on any considera tions whatever, unless tne parlies Deiongea to tbe army. This order was so peremptory that even those connected with the press, some of whom bad como down to forward their report by the mail boats were preveuled from return- lug, and others who bad smuggled themselves hrough were promptly sent Buck. On the same day Uen. Casey oame down and look command of Ihe small land force, not exceeding 000 men, and in the evening was noil-Bed to prepare at any moment for the entire evacuation of the post, and tbe preservation as !ar as practicable or tne publio property, similar orders were also sent to Col. lugalla. He immediately oommuuicated with tbe fleet, and a division of men armed with axes proceeded during the night lo cut down Ihe trees around White House, aud subsequently all the way along, above and below the Pamunkey bridge, so as to give them free play for Ihe use of their guus. On the same evening wo had a report irom headquarters mat a aiviBion or the rebels, the foioes of Stonewall Jaoksou and Uen. Ewoll wore approaching and threnleniug lo open the way by tho right flank for a raid on the While ilouso. In the meantime tho trains on the railroad wore kept running night and day, carrying forward nothing but ammunition and munitions of war, with siege and rocket trains, aud Hold pieces. The down train ot cars, due at eoven o olook on Wednesday evening, had not arrived, whiol added lo tho excitement among the sutlers and oatnp followers. At half past ten o'olock In tbe evening, however, the train arrived, bringing down about ninety wounded men, it having been delayed lor tneir accommodation, xney were nearly all oi uen. A largo number of those wounded were, however, very client, most of them being able to walk from the sars to Ihe hospital boat. Thus ended the events of Wednesday. D0IN03 ON THUR8DAY. 1 The foot that the gunboats had taken position in front of the landing with their guns out and shotted, and the sweeping away of the trees, which was still progressing, gave ronewea ao-tivii v lo Ihe rush of the camp follower for pas ses by the mail boat (o Fortress Monroe, and our population commonoea io ue rapimy ae-pleted.Tho down train from ihe fwnt reported all quiot with the oxoeption of oertain mysterious movements within our linos lhal were not understandable to oivilians. The lmmenic stock of stores and forage at Dispatoh Btalion, eleven mile from While House, wuro being oarried off with groat rapidily, and subsequently we learned that an immeuse train of wagon, had been running from that point all day, with forage and stores, and that the greatest aoiivity in their removal was being observed. In Ihe evening it was announced that not a bale of hay, a bushel of oals, a barrel of beef or a box of oraok-erg was left. Throughout tk day at While House tbe greatest vigilance was observed in and around the headquartors of Qoneral Casey, who had pitoh-ed his tents on the beautiful lawn In front of the While House, Ihe building itself being ooort-pied as Iho private quortors of Ihe Sisters of Charity and here let me add that It Is quite a small building, having not more than six small room in it, Iho outbuildings and servant' quarlor boing separato from Iho resideno. finnoral Waahincrton himself eoitlil not complain of tit use ot It by UifBO ministering angel of the sick and wounded eoiater. The i.i.i nn tha railroad wore still tteadily mov. tng forward with ammunition, and eontinned throughout tbe night. Cavalry ooouts bad also ..nt nut in various directions during Ihe day, and preparations wor niido for olntruol-log the roads. At dusk new panio was eeetaieaed by tk dlaoovery that bale t bay bad been piled over and about all the large massea of rabaiiienoe stores an tk landing, indicating tb probability that it might beoom necessary during tb sight to apply lb torch to them lo prevent their falling Into Ine hand of tb enemy. Whilst all these preparation were going on, Indicating lb probable intention of evacuating tb landing on shore, lb numerous aleamers and tugs, probably fifty in number, had been busy towing down tbe river to West Point, a dittrnoe of fifty mile, through It tortuous windings, long lines of brig and barge laden wilb stores. The vessels that war loatlered about In the vicinity were alw oollected together in eeparate group and anohored in the stream where they oould be easily and rapidly taken in tow by the steamers when lb time for tneir removal arrrlved. Ana in order mat we reader may imagine lb scons here presented, it may be proper for him to understand that not les than seven hundred sail of vessels were, two days previous, at anohor at the While Home and landing and stream along for eight or ten mile down the river. ' In ihe meantime, the work on the oonslruc. tion of lb railroad bridge over tb Pamunkey, Just above the landing, was steadily progress ing, a large foroe of workmen Doing oouaiantiy at work. This faot, in oonjuuolion with the evident movements towards a epeedy evacuation, bewildered the speculation of the uninitiated, but Colonel Iogalls, nnder whoa direction the evacuation was progressing, moved abont as coolly as a Bummer's morning. The morning train brought down the gratify ing new that ihe forward movemonls of Oeneral Hooker bad been entirely successful, and that be held the enemy's camp and rifle pila About on hundred more of the wounded ar rived, and were removed, with the others, to the hospital and steamers, where Ihe Banitury Committee, with their large eorp of surmoaa, and th numerous Sisters of Charity in attendance, don all in Iheir power to render Ibe poor follow comfortable. ' " On Friday morning the first Horn of news from the front reoeived by lelegrapn was a gratifying announcement that Stonewall J ack-son and Ewoll, in attempting to turn the right flank, wer repulsed by Gon. MoCall with his Pennsylvania Reserves, ana ariven uac whu great slaughter. Thie attempt of Jaokeon was made at three o'olook in the morning, and bad closed at six o'olook, with a signal victory. This repulse is eaid to have been one of th most decisive and destructive of the war, the enemy being put lo a complete rout, with viry light loss to our roroes. Aiuumgu a, "'r'", and Intended for a surprise, the gallant l'enn-sylvanians were found to be wide awake. There was, however, every indication of a general battle along the whole line, and General McClellan, in order to be ready for all emergencies, gave directions to Uen. Casey and Col. lugalla to make every preparation for the instant removal or destruction of all the supplies at White House, should tho result of Iho impending battle render such a course neoessary, his force being deemed loo small to render the successful defense of his position a certainly against such a movement of the enemy as might ensue. The steamers and tugs wore all in oarly requisition and were moving down the river with long trains of transports in tow. Tho vessels nanrnat the lending: were also stored full of oommissary stores and munitions, and moved out in the stream. Tho immense piles of boxes of oraokers, barrels of pork, and other stores loua the landing were again covered, over wnn bale of hay bo as io bo ready at a momont s notios to apply Ihe torch for their destruction if it should becu-ie necessary. There was also great oommolion among tne orowds of contrabands, who have been found most efficient laborers, and who have been used to great advantage ia the oommissary aud munition departments. They soon understood that danger was apprehended, and on being assured by Col. ingaus tnat iney wouiu nut ue ion oe-hind to meet the vengeance of their masters, went to work with renewed energy. Stores and munitions emywhero disappeared from the landings in great rapidi'.y, and were being paoked on the wharf boals and vessels contiguous. The wives and ohildreu of the contrabands also soon made their appearance, aud with bundles and babies took a positlou on tne canal boals as they were floated out in ihe stream.) ' The mall steamer, . wnion suouiu uave icii. ioi-Fortress Monroe at seven o'olook in the morn-inir. en ordered to be detained, and at nine o'olook a dispatoh was received that a general battle was progressing aiong tne wuoio nuo, the enemy having renewed tbe atltempt to flank General Porter's position on tho right wing. At eleven o'olock a seoond dispatoh announoed that Ueneral Porter had driven tbe enemy before him and repulsed him three limes with terrible slaughter, and was then ordored by Gonerat MoClellan to fall b ick. This dispatch was a signal for renewed energy in tne worn oi evacuation, and all tne ituartermaster s papers and valuables, and the obests or in raymas-ters were brought on board the mail boal. The family of Quartermaster Epgle was also brought on board, wilh his borse, and oarriage, aud the horses of Assislont Quartermaster Saw tell. The household furnituro and the servants of these ofholalseleo soon followod, whioh increased the excitement among the. sutlerB and army followers. Some of the sutlers became ao panio- atrieken as to sell out Iheir stocks at half-price, and hastened on board the boat, whilst some determined to hold on and lake the ohances That there was an intention on tbe part of Gen. MoClellan to evaouate Ihe W bite House as Boon as his movements in front should be perfected there was no doubt, but whether as a necessity or a stratgetio movement could not at that time be foreeeen. THE PANIC CHECKED. During: tb afternoon (he panio inoroascd until half-past three o'olook, and steamers and tugs wer busily engaged in towing down the transports. At three o'olock a dispatoh was receeived from headquarters, in substanoe as follows: 11 If. have been driving the enemy beore us on the left eeing for Ihe poet half hour. Ghoert are heard all along ihe linti " This was ibe signal for a new ohanse in tho programme. All th Government valuables and th property of the otEcers was taken off Ihe mail boat and placed on board the steamer Ca monloo, and the order given for the departure of th mailboat, whioh left at three o'olock for fortress Monroe, taking wun ner in tow two heavily laden steamers, with direations for them lo be dropped at West Point. Two or the large nospttai steamers nuea wun siok and wounded also left about the same time, and moved maieslioally down Ihe river. The steamer Commodore was atill left at th wharf lo reoeive any new arrivals from the battlefield, and tbe Daniel Webster and Ihe Elm City, devoted io tne same aervioo, soon after arrived. It was also announced that General Bioneman with six thousand oavaliy and artillery waa within six miles of the Whilo House to protect tho work of evacuation if a dash should be made by the enemy in that dl reotlon. BCENE ON THE RIVER. The scene presented on tho river was a most interesting one. Ten mile below the White House about two hundred brigs, barks and schooners were at anohor, with auy quantity of oanai boats loaded wun implements ot war, oommissary and aubsislenoo store. On the whole route down steamers and tugs were passed. having large numbers of vessels in low, and at West Point, forty miles below the While House, not less than three hundred vessels were at an. ohor, whilst th numerous steamers and lugs whioh nad Drought them down were preparln to start up for ths several hundred still up the river. , STATEMENTS OF THE' WOUNDED. About savon o'olock on Friday evening num bora of the wouuded oommencod to arrive from th front of Ihe lines, with a few of the most intelligent of whom I had an opportunity of conversing. Thou engaged in the repulse of Btonewau Jackson represented his rout to be most qulok and disastrous. Ue came down on them expecting, a surprise, but found them all momentarily expeoting his approach, havlug been informed by Oeneral McClellan two day previous that ha was coming: upon them. In I stead of a surprise the enemy rtaetvod the first NUMBER 1. bet, and after twe hours' fight retreated ia eon-fusloa.Ths wounded from the fight whioh Immodi alely aisued represented il 1 have been a mos lerrifio tocounter, the enemy ooming out fron. Riohmond upon them in suck dense maaae lba tbe shall aud grape poured into them a the advaneed, made great gaps in their line which were imaieaiateiy nilsa up and they moved for wara most determinedly. Their artillery wai so poorly served lhal tbe damage to our rank waa light in proportion. They still moved on ana exonaugea showers of minnie bails which wer destructive on both sides, but when Utn Porter ordered a bayonet charge Ibey retreated in aoume quick, inougn ueneral I'orier pursued them but a short distanoe. Tbe enemy again rallied aod approached our lines a seoond time, when lbs asms terrible slaughter ensued, this time their artillery be tng better served, was mors effective io the ranks of our men. On ooming to olose quarters toey were again repulsed and driven back a still greater dietance. This twice fought over battle ground boing literally drawn wilh the dead and dyiug. Uen. Purler then a seoond time fell back to bis position aud waited nearly an hour for Ihe enemy to renew the assault. iney, however, finally etiae on in lnoreasrd numbers, having beeu largely reinforoed, and were again reoeived with shell and grape, causing grsat chasms in their ranks, and one poor fellow who had lost his arm assured me that he saw the loose arms and portions of Ib, bodies of tbe enemy making gyraliona through he air. A llurd lime Ibe enemy bore down most bravely and determinedly on our lines, and this conflict was the most severely contested of the whole, but when ihe bayonet was brought (o boar be foil back, aud waa pressed towards Richmond fully a mile beyond our orig-. anl lines. Again, for the fourlb time, Oeneral Porter fell back to his first position, when an order was rcoeivod from General McClellan to continue his retrograde movement slowly and in order So aoon as it beoame apparent lo the enemy thai it was the purpose of Oeneral Porter to retire tho enemy again pushed forward most boldly ,r.lm-(mrl loreo, vu.uug in New York Fifth, Lieutenant Colonel Duryea, the Now York Tenth, Colonel Benedix, and two other regiments, under oommand of Colonel Warren, acting Brigadior Ueneral, and Ihe en-tiro foroe of regulars under Major Oeneral Sykes. This fresh foroe held the enemy in oheck whilst the foroe whioh had previously bore Ibt brunt of tho battle moved steadily back and in good order, oarrying wilh them their wounded and dead. . The enemy made a fierce atiaok on the reserve, but oannon were posted at various point of tho route by whioh thoy were retiring to wards tho Chiokahomlny, wnicn occasionally poured in shot and shell upon them, and checked their movements aud enabled the troops lo move back iu the most admirable order. At one time in tiiis retrograde movement the re-sorvo foroe of Goncral Sykes charged on the enemy with the bayonet and drove him back nearly a mile. In this eharge Ihe gallant New lorB riitn ana coionei neneuixo now .urn Tenth drew forth the plaudits of the army by their steadiness and bravery, in whioh they, however, lost about a hundred of their numbers, whose bodies it was neoessary to leave on tbe Hold. Cheers went up along our whole lines at this gallant repulse, whioh was at three o'olook in the afternoon, and Ihe enemy did not again renew Ihe attack during the balanoe of tbe eve ning, but turned his oolumns down towards ins White House, which seemed lo bo the haven of all his hopes. The division or the enemy despatched in this direction was estimated at from twenty to thirty thousand cavalry, artillery and infantry. They started down at 3 o'olook on Friday afternoon. BTATJiiMEINl ur A rAXMAOir.ni. In conversation with a paymaster, who was ith Goncral Porter's Division whon Ihe battle commenced, I have a very full confirmation ot tho statement of Ihis gallant soldior. ue says that licinrr anxious for tho safely of Ihe large amount of treasure in his possession, he asked iuslrtiotion, and was told lo proceed on towards Savago Station, on the Ilichmoud side of the Chickahominy, in company wilh the wagon train then moving in that diroolion wilh Ihe knapsacks of the mon and all the valuables frcm the various camps of the division. He joined the train and moved oo, and describes tne artillery rcsorvus binmuuvu nivug tv m.u to protect Ike retiring of the right wing of tbe army across Ihe Ch.ckahofniuy. Ho says it was a most orderly movement, oonduoled slowly and steadily, and that the only evidenoe of panio was among some teamsters, who threatened to break their linen, but were instantly checked by a company of cavalry who drew on them and were ordored lo blow out the brains of the first man who desortod his post or disobeyed the orders uf Ihe guards. This gentleman left Iho Savage Station, south of the Chickahominy, at seven o'olook on Sat- rdar morning, anl Btales that during the night the entire right wingot the army passed over tho river in perfect order, not losing a wagon of tbe train, ana ouiy leaving sucn portion of their osmps as wsb not deemed worth removing, as thoy retired lo Iheir new lines. mere naa ootn no urmg uuuug mu uiguv, though at five o'clock on Saturday morning some heavy oannonadiug was in progress on the extreme lett lowuru tne jauies river, wnion soon ceased, however, and at seven o'olook all was again quiet. The railroad was in operation all night on Friday after Iho battle, and the last train that left lor tne nntte uoueo tooa its departure at sevon o'o'ock, and met no interruption on Ihe way down. LAST OF THE WHITE HOUSE. On Salurdav morning the work of evacuation at the White House had been nearly oompleted, and although there was slill a number of vessels before the landing, there was au abundance of Bteamers in readiness to move on wun mem at anv moment. At nine o oiook a train oi oars starwu oui for headquarters, but bad not been gone more than an hour, bofore it returned, reporting Ibe enemy to be approaohing Dispatoh Station, whioh is eloven miios from the White House. This, howevor. is supuoscd to be a mistake, as telegraphio commuuioation tnrougn to uenerai MoClellan was continued up to eleven o'olook, at whioh lime th mail boat started for Foitress Monroe. MY CONCLUSIONS. From tho foregoing I think I have conolu slvely proven that the objeot of Gen. McClellan, long before the battlo on Friday, waa to abandon the White HouBe. and also to draw ia hia right wing aoross the Chioabominy. That be has accomplished this moBt masterly movement with but little loss in comparison wun nis punishment of Ihe enemy tbero can be no doubt, and that ho has strengthened his position by constructing: his lines, and ohanging the base or bis operations to ine James river is eqnauy self-evident. There he will have the co-opera- lion of tha gunboats, and if the enemy attempt to intorrupt his supply vessels by making a dash on tbe James river tney win men, wun nromnt cunishment from the gunboats, and so weaken their foroes in front that the city will fall into his position witn but a slight struggle. An imm.neo tr.ii, r ararons was also moviui forward from the ubsistonoe and commissary department ih,i,h.mt tha dav. and Ihe immense stocks oa kneai vara hoini rapidly diminished.
