We could slate tbe details of this important and significant intelligence, but the signs of tbe times are sufficiently alarming to put Texas upon tbe guard. Soouts should be constantly on the alert, and our troops thoroughly organized for any movement. Col. Van Dorn has by letter informed t committee of the citizens of Corpus Christi, that at an early day he will place troops on the Rip Grande frontier for its ample protection..: - ' j The ladies of Goliod, Texas, have organized a company to practice tbe use of firearms. The above shows a goodly number of men, who, acoording to Senator Mason's precious doctrine, had no right to vote and ought to have left the Slate. They will stay and ultimately have the State with them. Tbe central counties are reported as nearly unanimous for secession, though no returns are given. In Riohmond oity only four rotes were cast against secession, and the wonder is that there were any. Ellswotu Abmed. The Troy Whig states' on the authority of Mr. Wisner, Col. Ellsworth's Secretary, that tbe Colonel bad a navy revolver in his hand, ready cocked, when murdered by Jackson. But he was looking at the flag on his arm when the assassin appeared, and was off his guard. - Otherwise no doubt Jackson would have fallen in his tracks before his bloody purpose bad been consummated. Kimtmekjr and Tmmsae. Tha Louisville Journal of Saturday bag the following :. ".. '' ' ' . ;, .. t . - vTchhbssks. We saw, yesterday, seven Union men of leanessee, all fleeng from that State for the protection of life and limb. Bueh of tpem as are the owners of property have left nearly the whole of it behind, and some of them, with scarcely a dollar in their pockets, know not where lo go or how lo obtain lor themselves and families the means of subsistences . Besides these fogitives, we taw yesterday two gentlemen, w ha, being known to contemplate visit to Tenneoeee, have been warned that would be at th peril of their live. - Vet one of (hese gentlemen is native ef Tennessee where bis ancestors have Uvea for sixty or seventy years, and the step-eon of a distinguished Ten nesaee -statesman who recently betrayed the Union parly; and b knows of ao better ground of complaint against himself than that be onee entertained at his hciae a freesoil United States Senator. , . . i. t ' God bat sometimes sent curses upon people, but seldom suoh earful enes as the Tennessee disunionieU are plucking down upon tbeir own beads. , Ab, Tennesseeans, ye nave driven fortn your best men to beoome wanderers in other lands, y can exclude from your borders the Louisville Journal and all other papers that dare thunder tbe truth into your ears, but ye eannol shutout the rum, the misery, tb desolation which, by your deeds of ruthless insanity, ye are creating in yonr doomed home. - ' Abxisq or tbe SzoEsatouMxs. Dr. McCloud, a highly respectable citizen of Scott, who came up tbe river a few days ago, says that a oonsid erahle lot of guns and ammunition was put off at Memphis and placed iu tne bands of uenera 1'illow; lb munitions were parked in tugar and tobacco hogaheadt and intended to come lo Louisville for the use of the secessiouisls of Kentucky, but it was thought safest to stop them at Memphis. There was of course an appro - tension as to what might occur at Cairo. A collector from a New York dry goods house met a debtor from Memphis in this oity yester- day and insisted upon tba payment of a bill of several months standing, . lbs Alempbian treated the demand with indifference, assuring tbe collector that be would settle at tbe close of tbe war. The aolleotor, however, discovered that the Memphian merohant had purobaaed bill of goods in this oily, for whioh he had paid cash, and, learning that the nrtioles were ready for reshipmenl, he lost no time in having an attachment issued upon Ihe goods. It is unneo essnry to say that the Memphian compromised and settled bis New lork acoouot without reference to tbe termination of tho war. Two fugitive Tennesseeans, who we met yes terday, informed us that they heard some en raged disunionists in that State swear that they would give ten thousand dollars for our bead. That's not a reasonable price. We know many good Union man, who, not having quit as good a head of his own as be would like, would gladly give twenty thousand dollars to have ours and think it a great bargain. Lesion of Honor. It has been determined by the Government to give to every man (of whatever rank) serving n tue Army ana isavy of the United States in defense of the Union, a diploma, on parchment, or fine parchment paper. Burying; m Fort. Quito an original method of taking a fort is desciibed in tbe last number of Jilackwoodi Magazine. In 1C00, a large Russian army besieged the Turkish fort of Azof, which was situated on a plain, strongly fortified, and had a small but well-disciplined garrison. No common approaches could be made to it, and tbe Turkieh oannon swept theleVel with iron hail. In this case the engineering skill of tho Russians was battled, but General Patrick Gordon, Ihe right-hand man of Peter the Great, and the only one for whose death it is said be evet shed a tear, being determined to lake -tbe plaoe at any oost, proposed to bury it with earth by gradual approaobes. He bad a large army; tbe soil of the plain was light and deep, and he set twelve thousand men to work With spades, throwing up a high oiroumvollation of earth, and advancing nearer and nearer every day to the place, by throwing up Ihe huge earth : wall before them in advance. The men were kept in gangs, working day and night, the earth being thrown from one to another like the steps of a stair, the top gang taking the lowest place every half hour in succession. In five weeks the huge earth-wall was carried forward nearly one mile, until it rose to and above (be highest ramparts, and the earth began to roll over them. This caused the Turkish . Governor to bang out the white flag, and give in. Hud he not done so, General Gordon would have buried the fortress. : Strength of the United States Kavy. The strength of the United Slates Navy al though not large in comparision with those of England, rrsnoe and Kussia, is by no means so contemptible as many imagine, its present composition is as follows: .: VEISS.U. But this Is by bo means all of our force. Fifty vessels have been chartered for the blockade by the mercantile marine, and forty-one of them are already in .commission. There are some twenty revenue cutters in the naval service, many of them fine vessels. In all, therefore, tbe government has about one hundred and fifty vessels afloat, subject to its orders, carrying two thousand one hundred and eighty-four guns, a very formidable armament indeed, and one which will be able, probably, to maintain a pretty efficient blockade of the Southern coast. Spades Tbomps. An impromptu meeeting of the Home Guaid of Bast Med ford, Mass, was organized a few days ago, and the members proceed well armed with spades,' hoes, rakes, seeds, eto, to the gardens of those of their neighbors now serving the country in (he Fed eral army. The y soon prepared the soil and j planted the beds in good style, much to the joy or tbe remaie relatives 01 inn absent troops. Southb Cdbbbhct. The city of Charles-has issued a very neat style of currency in the shape of shinplasiers, They read thus:' '- "The Council of tb City of Charleston, 8. C, '0. 8. The following is an extraot from the last wlU and testament of Gen. Jackson. . "First. I beqieath my body to th dust, whence it came, and my aool I God who gave It, hoping lor a nappy Immortality, through tbe atoning merits of our Lord Jesus Christ the Sa viour of the world. Seventh. The poor fool Donelson, whose brains, sines be ran on tbe Dark Lintern tioket lor tb Vict Presidency, have been in a slat of ohroaio addle, is now talking of drawing that sword in the cause of Jeff. Davis and the Southern Con. federacy. The only fear Is that he will run when the time comes to us it, and that the Union men will not be able to get near enough to dispossess nim or the relic. The South Atklatr for Arms. ; We have been told that Ihe secessionists were well supplied with arms, but the following card ould imply (hat there is yet a denoiency en that score : The Poitmtiter will place thil in tome contpicu- oui place To Oummitht. Montgomery, Ala., May 6, 1801. Tretteoti In Virginia. . 3 udge Lyons, of Richmond, in his oharea to the grand jury of thai city, thus defines the crime of treason according to th Virginia oodt: Any citizen or resident of Virginia who now adheres to the United States, giving the Government thereof, or its officers aid and comfort, is guny oi treason, furnishing information or telligeuce, money, arms, ammunition, provi sions, or any assistance, whether gratuitously for reward, is giving aid, and therefore com- iuing (reason. Even the attempt lo do anv of these things, though unsuccessful, will make a man giimy oi treason, . Acoording to this definition, there are at least xty or seventy thousand men in Western Virginia guilty of treason, but we hardly believe that the penalty will be visited upon them just ow. A Lack of Confidence. The Science American, ' of New York city, says: ' o ... As a significant indication of Southern confi. fience in the insecurity of affairs in that seotioo, we may mention the fact that, within a few days past, we nave reoeivea irem parties residing in slave States, thousands of dollars intrusted to us for safe keeping.
