Scene at tho Japaaaec Ilaadquartara Cireat RmeH ofLadltwHow tkay Kmnloar thelr Tim, .., . .. . Correpoodao of th w Tork Tlaaea-1 , ( - From the moment that the Embassy reached ' the hotel to the present, tbe vicinity has been crowded with all sorts of people, anxious to get ' a sight of these eastern curiosities. In vain ao- . tices are posted that "none but guests of the , house are admitted," and a crusty oerberns post- '' d at each of tha doors. The orowd rushes In, " and, strange to say, comprises, I might say. Aa '-undue proportion of ladies. I They crowded the reception rooms, peered in- , to the strangers' faces, fingered their garments, and in all ways exhibited far more curiosity ' and astonishment than tbe imperturbable objects of their interest. Indeed the Japanese made themselves at home immediately, and as - soon as they could reach their private rooms, availed themselves instantly of the beds and lounges. To all the importunate inquisiiveness evinoed by those around them, they appeared quite as impervious and stoical as if they oould-not see, or be jostled, orsuffocateel in a orowd, or inoommoded in any of the numerous waye 1 persisted in by their tormentors. At least a ' "' doxen of ths lower officials soon spread about ' the hall, and soon made themselves quite at .. home. Around each a little knot would oolleot, trying to exchange languages learning the " names of knives, cards, watches, features and various objeots. The signs and motions, the loud talking, as if one or the other as deaf, th , baby talk, and attempts at Dutch, Frenoh and Japanese were exceedingly entertaining. Three or four of the Japanese very obligingly oonsen- ted to write cards for the ladies and gentlemen ' who presented their own in return. How long . this would have continued, and the e-ood natura of the se-ibes endured, it is difficult to say. Certainly they were kept writing until the ink in their portable inkstands had nearly run dry. The artist meanwhile was busy with his sketch book, recording all things for the eve of tha Emperor. A few took a stroll about the lower part of the hotel, in the lobbies looked at tha cigars and newspapers, smoked a nuff or two. gave out samples of their tobacco, shook hands win everyoouy, including the waiters, and altogether made themselves quite comfortable. It was amusing to hear the comments of the orowd. "Ain't they like women?" "What do they wear two swords for 7" "They look like Chinese." "Look at his head shaved.'' "He's got trowsers like a Turk ;" "And a coat like a bntoher'a ' shirt;" "See his white sandals;" "Guess he's f one of the cooks ;" Wonder if he's a Prince;" "Can he eat rats :" and a thousand similar remarks and inquiries. About o'clock the principal members of the Embassy, together with a number of naval offi- 1 cers, sat down to a dinner prepared by the Ho- . tel, and differing but little from an ordinary din- . . ner for a member of Congress. In the use of wine," particularly, they proved quite as apt as the ! ' best Christians present, and, it may be believed there were some salamander throats present . with the Navy, so well represented. The Japanese used their knives and forks with great , skill, considering that those implements were new to them, and generally evinced great apti-' tudein learning. They do not, however, ex-hibit any embarrassment at the oeouliar man. ners of those around them, but, with the utmost tana froid, do just what inclination dictates, in-eluding Bitting on the floor, smoking in the par- ' lor, and, I was informed b an intensely dis--gnsted New York Councilman, even spitting on the carpet. One of them created a little consternation among the ladies by suddenly draw- " ing up his loose pants and drawing his legs under him, exhibiting a pair of calves that attracted some attention. As he kept perfectly quiet, however, tha ladies giggled and pretended to turn their heads. One of the first things done after their arri- ' ' val was to plaoe their money some $80,000 in the hands of Messrs. VVillard for safe keep, ing. What a sensation would some barbarian burglar create if he could put his paws on their treasure I During the entire voyage the treaty- ! " 1 box, containing the treaty, the ratification of which is to take place, and the treasure, has been vigilantly guarded. It was this that ere- , aled so much curiosity at the landing, and on ' being carried through the city perched on the ' ' top of an omnibus. Think of the muob.-boast.ed i treaty between America aud Japan traveling , into Washington on the top of a five-cent omni- . bus! Shade of Mika do-Dairie, think of that I ' 1 " One curious incident of the reception was the recognition by most of the Japanese of a mid-- shipman, attached to one of the Philadelphia papers, who visited Japan in the steamer Mi- ', '"' tUeippi about nine months since, and knew most ''' of the Embassy. They were evidently pleased ' to see him, and renew their aequaintanoe. In his anxiety to show his gratitude, one of the Japanese bestowed a handful of Japanese coin on an Irish porter, who had handled the " ' ' baggage. Pat was at first at a loss to know what to do with the money, but in an instant the curiosity-seekers, who witnessed the incident, . were buying him out with quarters and half-dollars, until he was showered with enough to pay his next month's rent. . .' A number of the Japanese evinced great'in-; . torest in the different styles of oigars. They . would take one offered them, and, after break-ing off ihe end and smoking a little, would 'l " ' break off more and hand it back litellw ea. questing (he giver to smoke their "old sogers." They also passed around their pipes to be tried . by those who wished rialr ,ntr a. nn H i i-inn nf the tube similar to that ot the instrument upon which the boys "try tha strength of their langs." The bowls of their pipes are very small, and.-i: contain but enough "ta-ba-ko" for a few whiffs. , An incident occurred in the reading-room which would seem lo indicate that John Bull is "' not muoh in their favor. One of the interpreters said, with a very good English accent, "San Francisco fine city; Washington fine city. We J.,k" America, Russia. France not like English! and, with a significant shrug of tbe shoulders and an expression of contempt for the Eng. lish, he left. . . , , Thus far they have expressed themselves greatly pleased with the attentions paid them, and are perfeotly satisfied with their quarters. They have also declared that they are not offended at the inquisitiveness of the lookers-on. Their example would certainly inculcate better manners. Besides the princes, some of them are very rich, and are gentlemen of education :' ' and refinement. This in a measure, if not entirely, accounts for their apparent effeminacy. .. They have athletes and laboring men in their own country, who are as robust as the best of us. Commodore Perry, it will be recolleoted, saw a number of these professional athletes, one of whom, Koyanegi, was the Heenan of Yokn- ! ' hama, and trained lo as fine development, phy- . sioally, as the vanquisher of England's vanted ohampion. The presents to the President will be probably opened this week. They are, it is said, of the most costly character, ornamental and useful. On the oocasion of the presentation on Wednes- day, the present rather unbecoming traveling dresses of the Embassy will be changed for ap- ' propriate habiliments of a richer description. The Minnie rifles which they bring, manufactured by themselves from samples left them by Commodore Perry, have an improvement in the method of loading, which is much praised by both our army and navy officers. The ladies at Willard a have been making pets . , of two of Ihe youngest and best looking Japanese, who speak , little English, and the chambermaids ar developing the deepest interest in the servants of Ihe kitchen. - I do not pretend to divine what will be the result of this, but mention it for the benefit of whom it may eoncern. As the Japanese delegation consists entirely of males, and their stay from home will be a long one, I do not think it would be impossible, if their religion will permit, for a few matches to be formed especially if the men put their hatchet matchett together and .talk the matter over. That will present a new develop- 1 . ment in th eharaoter of races across between the Yanke or the Irish and th Japanese. . Think of Josh Cowasaki, Bridget Masuch San-jsro, or Jonathan Moray-ama-hico.-

That will present a new develop- 1 . ment in th eharaoter of races across between the Yanke or the Irish and th Japanese. . Think of Josh Cowasaki, Bridget Masuch San-jsro, or Jonathan Moray-ama-hico.- |
