That was all they said seven short words. I read the telegraph paper again and again, before I could comprehend the full force of the message it Lore. My eyes wandered over the regulations of the company, their tariff of prices, tho conditions under which they undertook their func tions, and at last reverting to the penciled lines, I roused myself from the stupor into which their receipt had thrown me and understood their purport, lillen Luttrell was dyinp-. She was my cousin, my earli est playmate, my embodiment of all that was lovely, pure and womanly. 1 I have no sisters, but had I been so blessed, I could not have loved her with a deeper affection than I bestowed on Ellen. My regard for her was utterly passionless, utterly indescribable. Love, in the common acceptation of the word, had never been mentioned between us, we confided to each other all our flirtations, all the ca prices, annoyances, nndjealouses which which are the lot of young people. When I was first enjjarred to Lucy. I was not happy until Ellen could share mv iov. could see the object of my choice and in sweet sisterly tones could congratulate mo upon it. It was my delight to see the af fection sprinsrino- up between my cousin and her whom I now call my wife to l . i ' . near tueir mutual praises ot each otuer, ana to tnink that, until some favored suit or should come to claim her for his own, Ellen would share our new home. This was not to be. Just before my marriage, rny cousin went to PJurgundy, on a visit to an old school-fellow, whose husband, a sickly and consumptive man, was com pelled to reside there for the benefit of his health. Her slay in France, which was lo have occupied but a few weeks, extended over six months. I heard from her but twice during the interval, but on the occasion of my marriage she wrote a long and affec tionate letter to Lucy, telling her that she was perfectly happy, and speakinn in those mysterious terms which girls love to use, ol a certain V icompto de liode, who was paying her great attention. Two months after, Ellen suddenly returned to England, accompanied by her brother who had been despatched to bnnp; her back There was a mystery connected with her return which 1 could never fathom; her mother, indeed, wrote mo a plaintive letter lamenting the folly into which youne gins usuauy tnrow away their attections, and hinting that even Ellen's good sense was not proof against womanly weakness, and that had she not been recalled when she was, she would have beon'drawn into a marriage which for reasons heraftor to be verbally explained to me, must have bsen an everlasting source of misery to her. At the receipt of this letter from niy aunt, I was it is needless to say, very much pained, but being forbidden to an swer it (for Ellen was unaware that I had been written to, and the sight of a letter in my well-known hand-writing would doubtless arouse hor suspicions,) I was compelled to wait until further informa tion was auorded mo. 1 hat information nvr came, and until her brothqr telegraphed lo mo in the words with which I have commenced my story, I heard nothing of tha Luttrell family. Wilhin ten minutes after I received the telegraphic message, I had thrown a few things into a carpet-bag, had a card stitched on to it with my name, and Bolton's Tamworth, for the address, (for I am old-fashioned enough always to direct my luggage in caso of loss,) and was rattling in a Hansom to Euston Square. I arrived just in timo to catch the night mail train ; the platlorm was thronged, there were Oxford men going back to tho University barristers starting on circuit, sporting men going down for the Leamington steeplechase, and invalids oil to Malvern in search of health. Porters were pushing, rushing against stolid old gentlemen, crushing their feet with enormous heavily laden barrows, and crying, 'by your leave,' while the sufferers were clasping their mangled limbs iu anguish. The postofiico van, with its trim arrangement of sorting boxes, and ils traveling capped clerks, stood gaping to receive the flood of bags pouring into it from the shoulders of the red-coated guards ; non passo-.igers were bidding adieu to their friends nt tho doors of the carriages ; tho policemen were busily unhooking the various labels from neighboring Blctchley to distant Perth, with which the vehicles were bedizzened ; commercial gents, those knowing travelers, were settling themselves comfortably on the backseats of the second class; the old gentleman who is nlways late, was being rapidly hurried to his place; and ihe back-faced stroker was leaning forward, looking out for the signal of tha station-master to go ahead, when I sprang into a first class compartment and took the only vacant seat I found there. Once started, I looked round upon my traveling companions, who were apparently of the usual stamp. There was a stout, red-faced, gentleman ff.rmer looking man, rattier uu3iiea wun the last pint or port at Simsoii's and tlie exertion of cram ming a fat little portmanteau (tho corner of which still obstinately protruded) under tho seat ; there was a thin, pale-faced curate with no whiskers and shirt collar, but with a Ions? black coat, and silk waistcoat buttoning round the throat, a mild, w.nh- ed-out, siim, aflernoon-service style of a man, engaged in reading a litile book with a brass on the back, and 'Ye Ly fie of St. Crucifidge,' emblazoned on it in red let ters. 1 here was a Iidgfty, pinched-up old lady, wilh a face so wrinkled as to make one tlianutul she was a lomale, as by no earthly means could she have shaved it, who kept perpetually peering into a mottled looking basket suggwstive of sandwiches and sherry-flasks, under apprehen sion of having lost her ticket, and thero ft young man apparently devoted to the stock-broking interest, stiff as to all his rounder checked trousers, neatly as to his boots, who kept alternate paring his nails, stroking his chin, Whistling popular melodies in a subdued tone, and attempting to go to sleep. Finally, on the opposite side to me, and in the further corner, there was a lajge bundle, the only visible component parts of which were a large poncho-cloak, a beard, and a slouched, foreign-looking hut ; but these parts were all so blended and huddled together, that after five minutes hard scrutiny it would have been difficult to tell what the bundle really was.
