OLIVES CROMWELL A few cxtracls, describing the dying econo nt the cloao of llie eunlily career of to ri marknlile a muu bh Oromwoll, ami M. Gjizol'g eslimttfe of his elinnic-ter, will conali'uto 'he beat mode of conimeuding these volumes lo ptililio attention: " In tho perplexities of those who surrounded hitu Cromwell-took no part ; worldly afl'uirt, political qtirs lions, even in tho ititres!s of those persona who were denreat to him, retreated mid disippeared iu pmpor-tiott as ho drew nonrer to tho grave. His soul foil bark upon itself, nnd, as it advanced tnwnrda the mysteries of tho etetnul future, it canio in contact with olher thoughts and other porploxities than llmse which agitated the mourners around hi. bed. Cromwell's religions faith has exercised hut little influence over his conduct; the necessities, combinations, and passions of this world had more generally Rwnyed him, and he had yielded to their muatery wilh cynical recklessness a. ho was determined to succeed, lo become great, aeil to rule nt n'iy vol. Th Chriat'mii h.id disappeared beneath llie revolutionary politician and despot ; but, though it liml disappeared, it hnd not altogether perished; Christian fauh had survived iu his soul, though overladen by so many falsehoods and crimes; and when the filial trial arrived, it reasserted its power, and. to use tho fine expression of Archhish op Tillotson, ' Cromwell's religious enthusiasm gaiued the victory over his hypoctiay.' On the 2d of September, Cromwoll, who had been delirious, had a lucid interval ul some duration. His chnplaiiis were standing around his bed. 'Toll me,' sttiil he to one nf them, ' is it possible to fill from gracnT' ' It. is nut possible,' replied tho minister. Then,' exclaimed the dying man, ' I am safe J fur I knowlhat I wasonce in grace.' He then turned round, and prayed aloud. 'Lord,' said he, ' though I am a miserable and wn-tclitd creutore, I am in covenant, wilh Thee through grace; and I mny, I will, come to Theo for ihy people ! Thou hast made me, though very unworthy, a mean instrument to dn them some good, and Thee service; and many of them have sot too high a value tipiui mo.though others wish and would In) glad, of my death; but, Lord, however Thou do dispose of me, continue and go on to do good fur them. Givo them consistency of judgment, ono heart, and mutual love ; nnd go on to deliver them, and wilh the work nl reliiriiinlion, and make tho name of Christ glorious iu the world. Teach those who look too much mi Thy insf rutneiils to depend mor upon Thyself. l'lirJon such as detire tn trample upon the dust of a poor wnt ni, for they are Thy people, too ; and pardon Iho fully of this short pr.iyer, even for Jesus Christ's sake. Arneu.' One of his ailendants olTered him something to drink, and besought him to endeavor to sleep. ' It is not my design,' he answered to ' drink or sleep, but my design is lo make what haste lean to begone.' Day downed nt length ; It was the third of Septem. ber, his fortunate day, as he lmd often called it the nmiiveisnry nf his victories nt Dunbar and Worcester. Hy a singular coincidence, tho night which had just ended hud been very stormy a violent tempest hod caused many disaster both on Innd and sea; Cront-Aelt had lelupaed iu'o a statu of titter insensibility, from which he did not again recover. Between three and four o'clock in iho afternoon, as he lay still unconscious, lio heaved a deep sigh ; the attendants drew tisvir his bed ; ho had just expired. "At the news nf his death, a general sliuddnr, arising from vory dille rent fee lb gs, ran through all England. Cavaliers and republicans, Episcopalians nnd l'resbyleriana, Levelera and Anabaptists. nil Cromwell's enemies, brea'lied freely like ransomed prisoners; but they did nut stir. More than this: they repressed their jny in presence i f iho imposing grief of the army, and Die restless disipiieltido of the people. Cromwell died in tho plenitude of his power and greatness. He had succeeded beyond nil expectation, far more than nny other n liiose men had who succeeded him, by iheir genius, ln.vo raised themselves, bb he hud done, In supreme authority; for ho had attempted and accomplished wilh equal success the most opposite designs. Dining eighteen years that ho had been au ever victorious actor on tho world's stage, he had al- ernafely sown dtsoiderand established order, etlected and punished revolution, overthrown ujd restored government in hi country. At every moment, under all circumstances, he hud distinguished with admirable sagacity the dominant interests and passions or the tiuiu so us to make lhem the instruments of bis own rule careless whether he belied his antecedent con duct, so long ns he triumphed iu concert with Iho pop. 11 ar instinct, and explaining llie inconsistencies of ins conduct by the ascendant unity of bis power. Ho is, noihuiis. the only example wlncli 11 'story nttoras 01 one mini having governed the most opposite events, and proved aullicieul for Iho most various destinies. And the course ol ins violent ami ciinngetut career, 1 it cessantly exposed to all kinds of enemies and conspir acies, Cromwell expeneuced this crowning luvor ol orluiie, that his life was never actually attacked; the sovereign against whom killing had been declared to ho no minder, never found himself fuce to face wilh an assassin. The world has never known another example of success nt once so constant and so v irious, or I loittiiie so 1 11 v h 11 nl 1 1 y luvuriilile 111 too miont ot sucli manifold coiiflicts and perils." Spkkd of Haii.wats. Ur. Lardnor adopts some in genintis, or rather somo illustrations to show the ex traordinary velocity wiln winch our express trains move. The Groat Western bxpress lo Kxeter travels at the rate of 43 miles an In ur, including stoppages. To attain thiamin, a spaed of 60 miles an hour is adopted midway between some of the stations, and in certain experimental trips 70 miles an hour has been reached. A speed of 70 miles an hour is equivalent to 3.1 yards per second, 35 y .rds between two bents nf a common clock. Ail objects near the eye ol passen gets traveling at this late will pass by iho eye iu the lh nai l nf a second ; and if 3 j stnkei were erected at the side nf the road, a yard asunder, they would not be distinguishable one from another; if painted red, tin y would appear collectively as a continuous flash nf red color. If two trains wilh Ibis spued pass each other, the relative velocity would be 70 yards per sec- mid ; ami it one nl them was 70 yards long, it would (lush by iu a single second. Supposiug tho locomotive winch draws Btich a train to have driving wheels seven feel in diameter, these wheels will rovnlvo five times in a second. The piston moves nlong the cylinder ten limes in 11 second ; but as there aro two cylinder., which net alternately, Ihoro aro really twenty pulls or escapes nl steam in a second. Iho locomotive) can Dm heard to "cough when moving slowly, tho cougn Doing occasioned by the rough admission of waste steam up Iho chimney ; but twenty coughs per second cannot tin separated by the ear, their individuality being lost. Such a locomotive speed is erpial lo nearly one fourth that of it cannon ball ; and the momentum of a wholo Haiti, moving at such speed, would be nearly equivalent to the aggregate force of a number of cannon bulls, equal lo nne-foiirth tho weight of the train. That a smash should Inllaw a ' colli. nut is no sub eel lor maivel, if a train moving at such speed, or anything like such speed, s iould moot with any obstacle to hi progress. Last year, under Locofoco rule, the net proceeds, over expenses were about $50,000. In 1846, the total taxes levied were $2 580,073 14. In 1853, they amounted to $7,-804. ICO 81 ! la short, every department has increased under Locofoco rule in about the same proportion as the above. So much for Locofoco promises of retrenchment and reform. Canton Repoiilory. Such being the case, we would ask, which is the hotter course, to sell the public works, or tell the Board of publio works t We incline to the opinion that the latter would prove most profitable to the State; at all events, let all tax payers just think over the matter, and determine the result at the ballot-box next October. They ore eminently practical questions, and tiny require practical answers. Spring. Republic. " WinnERs." Gen. Smith, " the Hero of Chapulte-pec," has surrendered to a widow so did Julius Censor, so did Belisurius.so did Marlborough, so did Jackson (?) and Madison these we remember we do not add the cases where literary gentlemen have been de luilod by soft hands that smoothed their pillows, and soft eyes that wept over their poetry. We give a few cases which occur, to show, how from the days of Horcnles and Omphalo the sword lias yielded to the distaff. The elder Weller himself a " wictim" has declared with uneducated sngacity " that he can't remember though he has heard how many siDglo women one widder is ecul to in pint of cumin it over a man." We wish the gentlemen of literary leisure would prepare some statistical exhibit on the subject nnd some scientific association would deduce and publish the normal rotation between relicts and spinsters, for the instruction and protection of the, public Bart. Patriot. A correspondent of the Brattleborough Eagle tells the following story of a witness upon a liquor trial: " How do you know it was brandy 1" asked the lawyer. " Well," rpplied the ready witness, " I smelled of it first, and then I welcomed about a glass of it." The unexpected verb wholly upset the gravity of the court, jury, and miscellaneous people ; aud they were not all assisted in recovering their equanimity by his further testimony that the man who bought the brandy drank of it himself " till he was laltibriout." His soul foil bark upon itself, nnd, as it advanced tnwnrda the mysteries of tho etetnul future, it canio in contact with olher thoughts and other porploxities than llmse which agitated the mourners around hi. Spkkd of Haii.wats. Last year, under Locofoco rule, the net proceeds, over expenses were about $50,000. In 1846, the total taxes levied were $2 580,073 14. In 1853, they amounted to $7,-804. Such being the case, we would ask, which is the hotter course, to sell the public works, or tell the Board of publio works t We incline to the opinion that the latter would prove most profitable to the State; at all events, let all tax payers just think over the matter, and determine the result at the ballot-box next October. " Well," rpplied the ready witness, " I smelled of it first, and then I welcomed about a glass of it." The unexpected verb wholly upset the gravity of the court, jury, and miscellaneous people ; aud they were not all assisted in recovering their equanimity by his further testimony that the man who bought the brandy drank of it himself " till he was laltibriout."
