Buttles, Sec'y. From the Springfield Bcpubllc. The Doty of VotingChances-Five weeks from next Tuesday comes oiT the election in the great State of Ohio. Although the Whig party of this State has always been in a majority, yet the result of our annual trials of strength ib a matter of doubt until the returns are received. One princi pal reason for this, is the fluctuating character of tba Whig vote. It requires the excitement of a Presidential election to bring out our full strength. Our majority in 1836 was H,4o7 in 1840, 23,375 in 1841, 0,053. These successive triumphs establish beyond doubt the truth of our position, that the Whigs hare always been the majority in Ohio. In it not then, matter to grieve over, that this majority has allowed a minority tortile almost to ruin tho the State ? Well meaning men, good citizens in other respects, patriots, lovers of good legislation, have brought about our quadrennial defeats, not from lack or confidence 111 the purity of our principles, and their es sential importance to the welfare of the State, but from 1 fatal overconhdcncc, or an equally fatal spirit of luggishness. We repeat that five weeks hence we shall he sum moned to the ballot-box. The result cannot certainly be foretold. But this much we do know. The VVhiga have the power, if they choose to use it. By rallying in their strength, they CAN elect Mr. Behb, a majority of Congressmen, and a Whig Senate and House. W nether they W ILL do this remains to be seen. We hesitate not to say, that the voter who falters at this time betrays the State. We have more at stake now, than ever before. We have taken the manaiie- ment of our Public Worka and Financial Affairs out of the hands of the Public Plunderers, and we have Reformed the Banking System. Shall we give back to the Defaulters the Purse of the State, and permit them to thrust in their robber arms elbow deep Shall we surrender the control of our Public Debt to the men who have run up the awful score ? Shall we give the control of the Banking System to David Tod and hin Eighth of January masters, w ho have sworn against it n uncompromising hostility," and who are pledged to hestrot evert Bank in Ohio ? It would be madness to do so rank treason to MM noble conservative principles. Let ui have a few years of stability in our legislation, and Ohio will cause the Nation to wonder at her mighty strides in the path of prosperity. It belongs to the Whig voters of Clark, and the other ennnties, to determine the result. For the third time we say, the Whig majority is just ns positive now as it was in '36, '40 or '44. But it must be brought to the polls, to be effective, and not an hour of the five weeks should he wasted, but every effort put in requisition If gal out the voters. Friends in the townships, don't look to the County Committee, or to the Whigs of Springfield. Go to work yourself! Keep at work. Organize! Organize! Wake up! And let us prove that Clark county ia not the home of " a-ly Whigs." Farmer a Nn Mechnics for Doctors, Lawers,&. are very unfashionable just now look to your interests, (t is certain Government will not do it for you; and it is attempting to prohibit you. Congress has reduced the Tariff, thereby entailing upon you a debt of government, which has to be paid at some day, by taxes direct or indirect. This Polk government is afraid to take the responsibility of their own expenses, and prefers shifting it over to some wiser administration that will follow after. The Locos have passed a bill, making debfs payable in gold and silver. Your National and State governments sre so closely connected, that whatever way the prevailing tone of the general government is, must be felt through the State govern ment, in all its ramifications, it ia ot no use to say that the Whigs have the power in Ohio, therefore tunes ought to he good tn tins state. 1 his is sophistry. Does Ohio control the tariff the 8ub treasury system the war expenses, Ac. ? We trow not. But farmers of Ohio, yon as individuals, in connec tion with those ot other States, can control the elections ; and it stands you in hand to be up snd doing. Begin at your county tickets, nnd carry them triumph ant for the Whigs who have never deceived yon who have always, when they had the full power, given yom r.i.oRiors times. Can you support a government that is harder than was that of Pharoah- Farmera, just now, you have taxes to pay, and they must be paid ; and where do you get money to pay them. Suppose that from this place you take '0 bushels of wheat to the nearest market, say Brifjeport. It will cost yon 124 cent per bushel to get it there, and when there. you will get m cents in cash tor it. Jicn your wheat will bring 50 bushel- at 311 cts equal to 15 624 Deduct for hauling 50 bushels I J J 0 25 Balance h?4 An amount that will scarcely pay the taxes of tho most moderate farmer. Tonr potatoes, yonr corn, your oats, w ill not sell for enough to pay the carriage, and yonr tobacco has depreciated to such an extent, that the whole country now leehl with the loss. This administration must be pat down I p then, men, and at it The 2nd Tuesday of next mouth is the time for action. True. Blue. Pr.Acni tf New Yon asnj LonoN We are ha-formed that peaches w-re sold in New York on Sat-usday at 8 ceata a basket In July, 1843, we saw peaches sold in London at ten skiUings a swe We dare not ask any body to believe this statemrnt and yet it is made upon uV evidence which our eye- and ears faisushed. .' Buttles, Sec'y.
