Miss of Vct BloomfieUl, cured ot irregularity of the OHIO STATE JOURL f Stage Coach Adventure. A few years since, being on urgent business cast, and the river in rather an uncertain state, I entered myself a passenger in one of Neil, Moore &, Cos. stages to Columbus and Wheeling. A party of young Keiituckians, apparently fresh from college, made the. principal part of my fellow-travelers. As soon as the next watering place afforded the opportunity for the purpose, two or three of the party referred to jumped out, bought cigars, and having lighted them, resumed their seats, rilling the stage with cigar smoke, and myself with ill-humor, for 1 had little doubt, besides the annoyance of the thing itself, that it would cost me a sick headache, as it is apt lo do with me in such cases. The weather was excessively cold, and the curtains had been carefully buttoned down to exclude the fresh air. I wo or three ot these buttons 1 contrived to dislodge of their trust, and by keeping the opening as wide as possible, and my head out of the window, I succeeded in getting ou to the next stage, where I arranged the curtain so that 1 could lean out with little other disadvantage than the cramped and constrained limbs to which an unchanged position for ten miles doomed me. As soon as 1 reached Lebanon, I improved the brief stay we made, by running over loan apothecury 's shop, where I selected an unctuous piece of asafL'tida of the size of a walnut, and hastily pay- ap for it, regained my seat just in time. It was now getting dnrk the days being short the curtains had been again tastened down during my absence, so securely that it was difficult to dislodge them while the stage was on the route. For this, however, I did not care, being confident that the odor of the fragrant gum must overpower the cigar lumes. So soon as 1 was well seated ami under way, and the stage filled with smoke, the lump was rubbed freely in the palms of my hands, and soon the perfume began to assume lis claim to recognition, u noi respei i. A snorting and snuffing gradually began to pervade the passengers, and various aatirical remarks and con jectures were freely made. At last, one or two, who could stand it no longer, alter some time, made an lort, and unbuttoning the curtains, let m the keen iros-tv atr, which .soon banished the odors, alike of the tobacco nnd the drug, and for some time the whole par ty enjoyed the luxury of a pure atmosphere. After ri ding hall an hour in the cold air the curtains were put down again, and aga'n the perfume rilled the stnge. Two of the passengeis now made for the roof, and the curtains being once more raised, were kept up all the way to Xenia. Here a Iresh supply of cigars was procured, and the smoking, as soon as we started, resumed. AU alas for them to no purpose. My principal difficulty during the last route had been to preserve my gravity ; for my past indignation had now become swallowed up in other feelings, and 1 asked one of my neighbors if any thing was disturbing him, as I observed he could not sleep. " Yes," replied he, there if disturbance enough. I can neither sleep nor breathe. There seems to be a parcel of rotten eggs or onions in the stage. Don't you smell anything." " Nothing," I coollv replied, " unless it is this lump of Rsaftetida, which 1 always carry in travelling, as the only remedy for sick stomach which the smoke of cigars is always sure to give me." The murder was out. 1 spoke with so much sim- pY.eity and natTidnes thai the parly did not know what to say for a minute or so, by way of reply. At last one who had been my chief tormentor with cigars, began to blow off steam, and said it was d d extra ordinary that any gentleman would use what he must know would make every body sick who was present, and annoy the whole slage in this way. If the cigar smoke was unpleasant, why didn't TOM say so ,J This provoked nie, nnd I replied that it ill-heeame those to talk of incommoding others, who had violated all the rules of travelling hv rilling a close coach with tobacco smoke, without caring, apparently, whether it agreed with the rest of the passengers or not. lie made some inarticulate attempt to reply, but as I judged, felt that h.2 was not likely to gain much in a personal quarrel with a man so much older than himself. Perhaps, nlso, he felt that he was in the wrong So oAer a brief pause Vell," nays he, "if my cigar annoys you so, I shall throw it away." This he did hit companions doing the same. "Then," said I, " I have no further occasion for the nsafaitida ;" and threw it away hv way of peace offering. We all rode a few miles farther in silence, sullen enough I suppose on their part. At last 1 was startled with a succession of heurty but involuntary peals of laughter from my late antagonist, to whose mind the whole dilaavulty now seemed excessively diverting. At length he sought relief in words, remarking L' This is the d dest funniest thing I ever did sec ; nml at intervals all through the day, outbursts of merriment and ill-suppressed tittering passed all round the stage. As soon as we changed stages, I had to take a treat from the company, the individual to whom I have referred, and npjreared the master-spirit of the party, assuring me it would he a long time before he would forget the trick I had served him. We parted at Co lumbus, excellent menus. t.irt ,'ldr. Mr. Ingcrsrtll and Sir. Webster' Mr. Schenck'i committee last Saturday made their report. We copy it : I he select committee, appointed to inquire as to the violation of the seal of confidence " of the Slat Department, and how information was obtained hv Charles J. IngersoH from aecret papers and accounts in that department which the President had declined to communicate to thai House in answer to a resolution and request of the House, KUrORT That immediately after their appointment thee nro. ceeded to make the investigation required by the order of the House and have been assiduously engaged ever since m 1 1 u itiscuarge oi me uuiy assigned inein. They nave appueu 10 an supposeu proper sources oi mlor-mation, and have examined all the witnesses who were likely to be able to throw any light upon the subject of their inquiry ; and the result of their labors has been a mass of testimony, which they now poductf to the House. Alter much consideration the committee have concluded to present the evidence which they have collected, without any expression of their opinion in regard to what is established by it. Whatever might properly be said by the committee would but consist of conclusions and inferences, to be drawn from the proof itself, and which can as well be deduced, from the facts as they appear, by the House as by the com- mittee ; and they have deemed it most proier, therefore, under all the circumstances, to forbear an v comment whatever, and to leave the House, after considering what has been elicited by the examination, to take such order and action in the premises as the case and the occasion may seem to require. The commif. tee present herewith the full record of their proceedings, and of all the testimony taken, asking that the same be printed for the use and information of the? House. And inasmuch as some portion of the proof uuuueuti huh inuicaies one or more ot the subordinate officers of the State Department with Mr. lngersoll in his means, and the manner of procuring access to secret papers of that department, the committee also propose that the resuJt ol their investigation be communicated to the proper executive heads. Thev re commend the adoption of the following resolution : psiBisia., ihiw report and record ot proceedings of the committee, and alt the testimony, be printed for HM use oi me utilise ; mat the Speaker he directed to lurnish copies of the document when printed to the President of the United States, and to the Secretary of State ; and that the committee be now discharged from further consideration of the subject. The Washington Union furnishes the followinp, at this time interesting article upon the subject of Mexican names : On inquiring the signification of the names of the places which form scenes of our recent victories in the aniithwcst, a friend informs us that Palo .Vto means High Snake, or High Timher. For Hemca dt la Patma. no exact equivalent can be given in as many English words : Kesaca is a place overflowed bv a high tide, or n flood of river, and left dry on the fall ; and Palma n a palm tree ; so that rahn bottom seems toexpressthe meaning more nearly than any other concise form of words. The town of Mntamoms was so called in honor of one of the early heroes of the .Mexican revolution, who, like Hidalgo and Merelos, wasa curate, and like them, also, was taken prisoner, and executrd by the paniards. The Brazo de Santiago is just St. James' inlet; it is about a mile in width, and forms the communication between the gulf and a long, narrow, and shallow sound, which runs along the coast almost a hundred miles northward, separated from the sea by the bandy Island of Padre. The depth of the water on the bar, sj Lirh stretches across the Bravo de Santiago, varies in depth, at different times, from four to seven feet, being deepened by a long spell of westerly winds, and filled up by a similar course of storms Irom the east. The breakers on it are at times terrific, forming a wall of foaming water, some feet in height, which extends athwart tie' p isaL"' from shore to shore Point Isalwl ii immediately opposite the entrance, distant a-hout three miles from the gulf. No scene can be more dreary than that presented on entering this place ; nothing but sea snd white sand hills, with an occasional small patch of weeds, being visible. Behind the sand hills are a doien miserable novels, tnu sniue tavern kept formerly by ashrewd and worthy Yankee, named Savage, from New London, which, tecther, compose tlte town of the Bravo. Five mdes farther sooth is another small inlet, called r?ort i'hirn little month ; and three miles beyond it is Baca del Rio the month of the nrer, where stands another collection of hovels. The latter name is, however, also sometimes applied to a farm and to an Indian village. Thv. Mtn. Ohio, June 12, 184(i. How they make it out. It will be remembered that one of the objections urged by the Locofoco press against the new Tax Law is the "enormous expense" which it will be to the people to carry its provisions into effect and whole columns of these delectable sheets have been occupied weekly in figuring out and "showing up" to the people this ' enormous expense " in its " true light." It has been a matter of no little surprise among honest men how this calculation could be founded in truth, but the matter is now easily explained these very editors themselves expect, by the operation, to filch the public of some thousands, and then charge it all to the credit of the " iniquitous Whig Tax Law." The editor of Ihe Somerset Post, in giving the puhlic few items on una suojeci, says I r,vcry place we have heard from yet, where the Locofoco press have printer! the Ansessnr's blanks, they have been allowed from firr to tin times the amount that was paid in Whig counties. For instance, in Muskingum, a large Whig county, tlie Assessor's blanks cost about ft0tl,2.", and in Washington county they cost less than JjlaJO. In Morgan county, where the matter wns managed by the Locofocos, these blanks cost ONE HLNDRE6 AM) HXTY-EIGHT DOLLARS!!! and in the latter county not more lhan half as many blanks were needed as in the large county of Muskingum." When such means are made use of, to render the law odious to the people, it is ti uic honest men of all parties should inquire, why are these things so ?Jtktns Messenger. Tnr. Horse Ch au.itf.r. The Telegraph re marks" This will give us a direct Railroad communication to Baltimore, and all the advantages of that market, as we shall be between 20 and 30 miles near- ear to it than to Philadelphia.
