Letter, on limine should 1 addressed to the IMMealic-s. FROM TUB LiSCAITEU OHIO MI'MESS. At the request of a highly riocliilile: iniliviJutil of this place, we have been imliiceil to publish tins week, the article of the itcv. Mr. Miller, of New Vorli, ii.,.ti tho subject of the IXotcl dicti Nunnery of .Montreal." We hnvo, heretofore, publicly suited our opinion o! tho correctness of Col. Biunb's ueeouiit of I113 visit and examination of the "Hotel Dicu;" mid from n close and attentive examination of Mr. Miller's article, we cm ace no proofs whatever to shake out 1'clie.f. Ol .me thing, wo tiro certain, that the booh of .Mann .Monk is pot fit to be road; and nnv female, who, like Giesnr'n wil.-, has any rogard for suspicions on her character, will no, own slio has ever rend it. , The uniiiiadversioiis of Mr. Miller upon Col. Stone's paper aro confined, ill a great measure, to rcitnilasst-r-lion and a new view ol tho scenery, which ho inj.-lit very justly and naturally tako of the vicinity of ..lo.i-treal and the surrounding country. . ,, , , ' Anion" tho instances ol " round assertion'' for proof, which are mauv, wo have only time to "it-it out one or two. "Tlio Col. is here" in the disci ipiion and dimensions of tho Nunnery '-solar from tho truth, that if I had no othor evidence hut his own to piovc that he had seen the Hotel Uicu, 1 would have better reason to believe that Col. Win. L. Stone had nerer inn the Hotel Dieu, than I would to believe that Maria Monk had not been a Nun in that establishment." l.y this rt of reoioniiu,', if U ') uc " c,,llc!1' Vc n,1.cml,! ,,u hrove that Col. 'l'wonty to a hundred, or there ahoiits," in a popu!..-tion of some twelve or lil'lecu thousand inhabitants, we should call a small proportion if wo understand figures uright. , Another point which we think necessary to the mi. dersiandiug of llic true character ol tho " Hook, ' bill which we readily oilinit was not necessary lor Mr. Miller to dilate upon to enforce his views ol the subject, is tho fuel, that tho Ki:vf.i:i:m guardians mid kneper of the amiablt Maria Monk's person and charurki; arc At this time emjagcl ill a law srrr to use. rtalil who sliull be entitled lo n " dividend of Ihe spoils,-' thm proving to tho world that it is altogether a money-making cjnecru. MARIA MONK AXD COL. SPINK. I have just returned from a sojourn of six weeks in Upper Canada, spent chielly in tho country adjacent to Montreal, and a part of ibc time in that city; and while Ihero 1 cn.lenvored lonvail myself of until opportunities as I could meet with of forming a correct judgment for invsrlf, on the controversy between Maria Monk, the professed cx-nuniif tho lloiel I hen Niiiinerv of Montreal, and Col. Stono of New York. Although from the attitude which the parlies now occupy, llie field of controversy might with propriety have been left to thomselves 'lull from the bearing which some ol the manors iif olvcd, havo on a question of n deep nod vital interest to tho Ainericnn people, it seems to bo a duty, which every citizen friendly lo llie perpetuity ol our inestimable religious and political freedom, owes tn tlm roniiiiniiitv. to cmlenvor, as fur ns truth and facts arc concerned, to disabuse the public mind on tliia subject. Ilesidcs huvingl since my return, been fro-rjucnlly asked my opinion, from what 1 saw nnd learned at Montreal.rtspecting the comparative credit due to Maria Monk's and Col. Stone's respective statements, I have concluded to present my opinion. The subject of Popery has deservedly awakened a deep interest among tho American people. Tho immense and increasing influx of foreign papists into this country for some years past, nnd the recent disclosures of the mural condition of tho popish institutions are eiie.-iiiiiaiiiiu-cs which cannot, nnd ought not to ho overlooked by ill" truo friends of American liberty, w hether civil or religious. DIMENSIONS OF THE NlSXrilV. On looking over the New York Speclntorof October 17, I was utteily astonished to lind ill"! Colonel Stone would venture the assertion which he lias d uic, in n-lily loan extract which ho makes from an article of lir. llrownlcc's, in which lr. Urowulce spoke of amain building and three wings, and two of ihe wiiias boiii.. three slUrics above ground, nnd ouo ut least u.i.lcr ground, ns four piles. Hut Col. Stone deel ires, ilia: il Dr. Hrownlco was nt Montreal, "ho would lind only halflhis number nt' piles, and llieso not half ns hg. He would lind no story helow ground, nnd only two bovo." The Col. is hero so far from liio truth, that ii I had no other evideueo but his own to pruvs iliut be had seen the Hotel, I would havo holler reason lo bo. liove that Col. William I.. Siono had never seen the Hotel Dicu, than 1 would lo believe that .Maria .Monk had nut been a nun in that establishment, ami h id not eeon what she described a, having taken place in it. liecausc her account lies imino claims lo credit, merely from the fact, ihal the conduct which, she Ins e'lnrgi d upon tlio priests and nuns, is very similar to whate.-ta-biishmoiits hnvo been often chargeable with in other countries. Hut tho Col's assertion would show lo n person who had seen tho Hotel Dicu, that ho had either lorgollcn Inc. evmenee oi nm own senses, or wuui.i u,u believed them. Col. Stono is csscnliulh wr.iuir. 1 declare my solemn conviction, from all thai I could see and learn in Monlroal, that Col. Sloue has either been in nt enrerriouslv inin isod upon bv the per ins interested in sustaining the chnracier of tho Hotel Dicu Convent, or he has willully and deliberately ationijitcil lo impose on his rcadors; and that his account of his visil lo .Montreal, docs, in no essential particular, diininili llie credit otherwise due to Maria Monk's " Awful Disclosures." rjEsemiTiox of moNtreai.. Col. Stone's report throughout gives pviilcnro iliat it is rather intended ns a mere production of tlio imagination, than i narrative of facts, or inferences founded on lads. This is evident to any person who lias ever Visited Montreal, or tho surrounding country. The describes thu Island of Montreal and llio vicinity 'of the city, almost as a perfect pnrmlisc. In his dc- tocrintion of tho ciiv. ho does indeed represent ibc ''streets ns narrow, and ho might havo added generally, almost in sonic instances, wholly impassable, on necouut Vif inuil nnd lihb in a rainy time. The houses he le-jircsents nt dark and inassivo stono buildiui'S, creeled more with an eye tn comfort and convenience, llian lo thorrntiticatiou of taste, or correct principles uf arehi- 'tocturo. Sow it used lo bo an admitted doctrine, that 'our notion of lastc in buildings, nnd correct principles '01 architecture1, wore tlio eltect ol llio mens, ol the conduct and convenience which tho appearance of buildings produced. The truth is, il is the very idea of llio want of comfort nnd convenience, w hich gives the cily of Montreal, llio unattractive appearance lo strangers, which Col. Stone notices. The natural silutiiion is, indeed, beautiful und grand, and this appears to be almost llio only thing in the Col's description in which he bus not been unfaithful. " Tlio Jicnt white coltnges every where clustering nrnnnd tho unmet ins pansli churches," which he saw from the mountain of Montreal, were all in his imagination. Il llio t'ol. had approached ihem near enough lo lake a bona fide view ol them, he would havo found his neat white cottages every where dwindled into comfortless Utile log bouses, having nothing whiter on them, in Ihem, or nhoiil them, than tlio mortar dial daubs llio chinks between the logs. Tho linbiiuiionsof the unlive Canadians may he said to bo tiny thing but neat, clean, nnd comlon-nblo. A description so wido from the facts of the case, show thnl Ihe wriler has something in view, ,1 1 il. n ut from thut of conveying lo his readers correct impressions.Another thing cni'i n s'ts;;e:'oi s'ivI-mv ov ibr vlwia rutn.1-, auj ui:i ie tl. That for his own part, he could hear of but two believers in llio Awful Dirj.'losircs in r.Jontroil. "And onuoftiie.se,"' ho nods, v;:3 evidently afraid to visit tho nunnery lest be should bo ferced bv actual demonstration to chttngo his opinion." The individual Ikto referred lo, Ihe iiov. .Mr. Clary, has, through the press, repelled tho Col's, ungenerous iiiiitria'.ien, and properly relinked bin for other mtsstalciuctits. lint either the Col. muai luivo lit on very pnrlia'i in his inquiries, or a most uncuinmen cheiigo'inust have t.ikcti place in a vcr"fliurt t;uie after ho iel't oioniieal, in llie sentiments of tlio pooplo. I was indeed told llie same ihiug by the two clergymen friendly to the cause of the nunnery, to whom f applied kr iiifoiiuaiion. I was, however, ikeu nhle toine.iiion the names ol same eittht or ten, with some of whom thev were n ipiaint-cd, who had nvowi il lo me their belie fin tho book. In my intercourse nlicrwitrds with the people where opportunity permitted, I directed my uiri'-s to that p jint. 1 lound many, cay twenty or more, n largo proportion of those wilh whom 1 conversed on llio subject, nvo.sed their unhesitating belief in llio truth ol the-Disclosures generally. The evidences of llicir belief wcro drawn, indeed, from diU'erent s itirces. I'or in-stanee, a respeci iblo and inielligent merchant w ho hail long heon n resident of the city, in conversation on Ihe subject, expressed some surprise', that the people of the Slates would givo any creelit to the statement of a peT-son of such a character us Maria .Monk represi'tiieil herself In have been. 1 staled my belief that but a few of (hose who credited her statemenls did it on llie authority of her word alone; but the character of such institutions, in oihcr times nnel in other places; llie natural tendency of such institutions being contrary lo tho design of the Creator, and tho uniform principles of Ii ii 1 1 1 ti ii nature, corroborated the most essentia! p u ts of her statement. He immediately replied lie did noi doubt, indeed lie had long been convinced, I tin t those institutions in Montreal were as corrupt as ever any nl n similar kind bad been in loiropo, or elsewhere; nnd that in general, the chai.ictcr given of the Hotel Dicu was just enough.
