COLUMBUS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 1850. VOLUME XIII. NUMBER 883 )to State Journal. HY SCOTT & DASCOM. WEDNESDAY EVENING, JUNE IS, 1850. I'OH GOVBBNOK, WILLIAM JOHNSTON, of Hamilton county. fOR BOARD t'F PIWMC WORKS, ALEXANDER O. CONOVEH, of Auglaize count y. y Oo unil hoor tbfl HunginiutiH to-night, at UM OiU'on. Arbor House Grounds. This pleuBaut resort will be Opsttija M-timriow, with appropriate ceremonies. Let nil who con, be ad buui to two the show, und cut tho loa crt'imi mid Mtrunrbrr rici. Convention. Tho Oonrsntion returned the coriiideratba f !',c xclusivu individual liuhility clause, und continued neraoa till noon. Tim debute opened with n long und, in ninny respects, admirable ipeflob tVoin Mr. Arch-botd. it hi been evident for some timo Unit certain (tpplitOCfi liuvt- been at work for Home time to whip him into something, end the debute on tho qttMltOQ of individual liability ha brought it out. There are a nnwber who think, and no doubt properly, that to insert u clause in tbfl constitution that all corporator! nhould be liable individually for demands' against their company, would bo n most sfttttlVB plan to prevent the formation of road oompanleii aoftdomiot, Sdo., for n tlioiisuud useful purpose" wherein men through the country would he willing to invest a hundred dollars even if tney lout it, but which they most assuredly would ROter do if their whole property would be mode liable thereby. Mr. Arch bold is of this number. Yesterday Sod the day before veliemeni attempts were made to drive him and some others from their position into the ranks of ultras. But it has all tniled. To-day Archbotd gate Keemeliii, et ah, a terrible Hogging for their "efficient dictation'1 to him and others. Al times he was renlly eloquent. Wo hope our reader! will watch the reports of Tnes lay and raiei'ully read his speech. Mr. Huniphrcville was willing to modify the affair and restrict the liability in case of roads, schools, colleges, &c. Mr. McCorniick went to the lartherest verge on this subject and made au ultra speech. He attempted to be rather hard on certain letter writers, as we understood him, to the Ciiicitmati Enquirer. II net all such cattle ut defiance. We dou t know what his friends had been saying about him thai he did not like. Dr. DorseV spoke against the universal application of the liability clause und took the view heretofore e-Wk totted by him, Archbold, and others on that (tide of the House. The discussion consumed 'he balance of the forenoon,A Nice Fat Job ! .More Mviiiillmu'. Our Washington correspondent boiiio day; shier, gave the history of a most bare-taced OSSO of swindling oa the part of the Union establishment, wherein, for printing 10,000 copies of the report of T. Butler King, lhal concern charged the government tho enormous sum of ?'18,()0i), when the regular price wus about II.'jOU. A short time since, this subject came up in tho Senate, and the fact about it were hilly ntated, and that, too, by democratic Senators. Of course, the man and the press that wan So hormr-strickeu ut the ullowauce of the Galphin claim, will he mum us death about this swindle. We call public attention to it igtirij that tho people may know how great is the honesty and integrity of these men, ami how piously they hate every thing and any thing in tho shape of fraud and public robbery; especially when they do not have a hand in it theius' Ives. Wo copy the following, from the debates in the Senate, Wednesday, Juno 5th, and from the Intelligencer of the Oth. The subject nf printing was under consideration, and tho report of Mr. jCiatj was spoken of. Mr. Benton said it was previously printed al a com mon document under the known rule of the Senate, and 1,860 copies Oust less than i-J00, and yet, after Vfardsj When ii was ri -printed with some few words ml d.-d to it, 10,000 copies come to $;i8.00(l. which, however, was generously reduced to $10,400, which was twelve times as much as it wan worth. Mr. Hah; Said I am asked if tin y Ostablllhed the role for themselves. They did establish it for themselves, mid under it charged $:W,II00 ) hot one ot the persona interested addressed a letter to the Secretary of tho Senate, and objected to receiving sit large a sum, and consented to receiveonly $12,000. Mv impre-siou is, that fair price for the work, as I read the contract, would have been about $400. Again: Mr. Borland said: The tatan.enl made by the 8 Sister from Now Hampshire U correct, as 1 understand it, as tho committee have uscortainsd while making inquiries for tho purpose of preparing an answer to the resolutions of the Senator from New Hump-ahire. Tt is nVuDer that 1 should buy. that the Im e sum of $ 13,000, which was reduced to $12,501), wiu not a charge which cum before tho committee on printing, W. ask the Maple of Ohio to look at this tninsaction. Here it is, admitted by Democrats on the floor of the U. S. Senate, and defended by nobody It stands out so plain a fraud, so Unmitigated a swindle, that no Lo cofuco would ii-k his reputation in -t:indiiig to its do-fence.And yet this is the paper which declared ij would oppose the udmiitis'ra'ioii of Hem. Taylor to the bitter end! This is the corrupt sheet that talks flippantly of the Galphin claim. This is tho chosen nod special organ of Democracy nil over the laud generally Grumblings. Why is it, that when a foolish man is caught and exposed in his folly, he must he eternally explaining and grumbling au 1 turning the thing over in his mind, and talking about it to his friends and the public ? One would think alter the very signal and decided rebuke of Med-iry by his own friends, that he would dosha to let tho public forg.-t his infamy any disgrace as soon as p usable. The consciousness of having Hone a menu act, and of having been caught at it nn l exposed, still rankles in his mind ami finds utterance in his pen. But it is the impotent raving of hnrmlesA malice, nud we let it pass. Wo will say to ihe public in general and the mem-hers of the Convention in particular, that if they have auv uouoi about ttie rorrertue ol ever item ol our statement, we ca t prove them all, and by Democratic members of the Convention We desire Mednry, or any one, to ak Mr r'arr what was said by the committee in our office ateont the course r. of the Journal in this matter. We know where w stand snd what we are about. JRailroaos. The cost of eastern railroad is a fc bont $.50,000 per mile, of western, sjbentj $o.',000. The nett profit on eastern roads is about fl per cent. According to this calculation the dividends on western roads will be about 10 per rent. !7Au Industrial Congre now in session at Chicago. i of radical reformers are Tlie Siiifesniiiu AluiKiiip us Own Friend. This has become to be so common thai it don't hurt much. Tl tfeMto-" that was refused a hearing in that affair, can now see the kind of spirit that is withiu him, So ini as there is an LrUUfl of fuel between lliein they must light it out. It did'nt fight folk's bullies, uorwcie wc lbs "unflinrhing friend nf the war!" as Medarv w,s, If the young Democrat who asked u pi ice in o;ir columns to complain to the public of bit grievances, i satisfied with being called a TUAlTOK, and TOBVi Sod 0OWABD, who deserred a hempen era-pn for his nuducity in doubting tho patriotism ol Medio y, ih ji we ure oonteni It is possible the Statesmen knows its old friends better than tre do. We express no opinion on this subject. We only Bay this abuse is to be expected by i very one who does not full down and worship the tnogiit ot that party. The SliiU'siiiiin on Archbohl. Those whose memories run back two years or more, will remember n beautiful war to the not knife exactly, but the pen to the nub between ottlseu Bamme dary nod Hon. Edward Archbold. We have never heard that Arefabold took back m very decided impression then publicly expressed, that the BuidMedmy was a great scamp, but Inst evening the Statesman had a very savory sugar and molasses eulogy on Mr. Archbold. Wonder what special inensum !b wanted to be carried that this drawing plaster becomes necessury ? We shall nee perhaps! SCoppur smelling works are now erecting at Detroit, and are expected to be in readiness for operation next August. Mr. Cass spoke at great length and energetically recommended the adoption of the report of the committee of 13. Ho spoke in high terms of Mr. Clay's compromiso. Mr. Dayton replied to Mr. Cass. He defended the President and condemned the report of the committee of 13. He looked upon the report as the offspring of confusion and discord. He continued speaking at great length mid gave way for a motion for adjourn meui. Thirty-Hrst Congress First Session. Washington, June 11. Bs SAT The bill to increase tho rank and tile of the army and to encourage enlistments, which was returned from the House with an amendment, was taken up. The amendment being in relation to tho propriety of Humming certain troops, wus discussed at some length and concurred in. After the consideration of the morning business, the Omnibus bill was taken up. Mr. Cass addressed the Senate. He severely handled iho remarks de p) Benton yesterday. He regretted especially his allusions to the chairman nf the Committee of 19. The Setiutor from Missouri had truly said that ours was a great, a prosperous, and a happy country. Prosperous as we are, trouble had arisen from what was now under consideration, and which In believed to he a most proper subject of compromise. A short time since the sOttth was threatened with the WUmot proviso, and yet when a project was brought tbrwurd to avert that issue and settle the u hole question, it met tin- utmost hostility from gentlemen representing tho Bouth. On the other hand, certain Senators from the north and west oppose it, just as heartily, as an abandonment of important considerations. If he hud a doubt of the justice of the scheme before this meeting of extremes ngahist it, it would have removed them all. Halifax, Tuesday. June II.
