Dear
Sister
This
is
an
awful
hot
dry
and
dusty
place
now
in the
day
time
and
damp
and
cold
at
night
We
have
no
tents
to
shelter
us from the
burning
sun
by
day
not the
cold
and
chilly
dew
at
night
.
We
have to
sleep
on the
ground
at
[crossed
out]
with
out
blankets
and the
blue
sky
for a
cover
Our
officers
promise
that
we
shall
receive
the
tents
in a
day
or
two
. Not
withstanding
all
this
exposure
there but
few
sick
in the
regiment
My
health
was
never
better
than
now
on
hard
crackers
salt
pork
and
river
water
for
coffee
[page
2]
We
are
expecting
an
attack
from the
rebels
every
day
. There
is
said
to be a
large
force
of them at
Lexington
.
Well
let
them
come
and their
carcasses
will
fallen
the
buzzards
on the
hills
of the
old
Kentucky
. The
hills
for
miles
around
are
crowned
with
batteries
and
long
lines
of
rifle
pits
masked
with
brush
.
It
they
do
come
there will be a
bloody
battle
fought
before
they
reach
the
Ohio
river
We
were
called
into
line
of
battle
twice
yesterday
.
All
seemed
cool
and
calm
.
I
commended
my
self
to the
care
of
my
maker
and
prepared
for
battle
. The
enemy
did
not
come
to
[sic]
time
however
and
so
the
fight
did
not
come
off
.
Hundreds
of
niggers
[sic]
are at
work
on the
[page

fortifications
and
every
day
sees
no
stronger
Reinforce-
ments
[reinforcements]
come
in
constantly
both
troops
and
cannon
We
will
make
a
hard
fight
before
we
will
give
up
Let
us
drill
a
little
more
and then
[line
drawn]
I
close
this
letter
for
it
is
tiresome
writing
here.
I
just
now
here
[sic]
that
Ben
Burnet
[Benjamin
E
.
Burnett]
is
expected
to
die
. He has been
sick
for a
day
or
two
