Dear Friend Hartford 9th mo 16, 1818
I have been contemplating writing to thee
for a considerable time respecting the Children,
Estate etc of John Morrison. I have no doubt that
thou hast heard of his death. John, his Son was then,
and is now at an Acadamy in N Jersey. As soon as
they heard of his death, he and his preceptor Amzi
Armstrong came here. On their way, they found in
N York, the clothes money etc which were on board of
vessel when he was drowned. These were with the
Public Administrator: He gave A. Armstrong an
amount of what was in his possession and in this a
receipt for several notes against Aaron Chapman, by
Thos Rotch.
A.A. had previously recd two letters from Charleston,
one of them expressing of sympathetic affection for
the children, from John Johnson a Senator of the State,
and offering his services. A.A. made enquiry in N York,
and heard that he sustained an excellent Character.
We concluded to desire him to administer upon the Es-
tate in Charleston - which I suppose he has - as we se-
parately desired it. Administrator [illegible] has
been taken in East Hartford, for this State, and also
in N York. Guardianship has been taken here for
the youngest son - & on the 26th of this month, John
will be 16 years old and will then probably chuse
A. Armstrong for his guardian - this he has express-
ed as his intention.
