Farmington May 16th 1807-
My dear friend will perceive by the liberty
I am about to take with her, that I place sufficient
trust in her indulgence- Indeed were my confidence
not very great I should not venture to ask her for
new favours until I had made some small requital
for the many & very kind ones already receiv d from
her- yet believe me these favors are felt in my heart,
not as the fetters of obligation, but like those kind of
ties which bind hearts together.
My friend will recollect that my husband
applied to her last winter for a loan of money- at that
precise time it was inconvenient for her husband to
advance it, but in his letter he intimated a hope that
it might be convenient in the course of a few months,
My husband hoping to get a long without troubling
Mr. Rotch, did not take advantage of his kind encou=
=ragment- but having been disappointed in his ex=
pectations of collecting money where it is due, he is
under the painful necessity of applying somewhere
for assistance- this assistance he might probably obtain
of some of our monied men in Farmington could he
submit to receive so great a favor from person whom
he cannot rank as friends to Mr. Rotch he would
fearlessly apply could he be assured that Mr. Rotch could
oblige him with-out in the least disobliging himself
but till he knows this he cannot apply will you then
my dear friend, give this necessary information if it can
be done with-out consulting your husband(who poor man
must be kept in profound ignorance)what a bold request
