Philadelphia 2 mo 12th 1822
My beloved Aunt,
Altho so much time has passed,
since I received thy truly acceptable letter, it was far
from my intention that it should have been the case;
but I hope in future to be more attentive in that respect,
but my engagements of different kinds, often prevent
when I feel an inclination to take up my pen.
With respect to Phila Chaloner I believe they just make
out to live pretty comfortably, but I expect that has
not been nor is not always the case; the yearly salary
of their son Daniel with whom they live is 400 dollars,
which is I believe their chief dependance, he has two
children; except sometimes Phila has a little work.
jobs brother who used sometimes to send him some money
has not in that respect been as attentive as formerly,
and his other some has been rather unsuccessful, in getting
employed in business, that would be adequate to the
support of his family, so that his brother has had to
help him, as far as was in his power, which I expect
was not much, as he has his parents to take care of.
I am in hopes as Phila becomes more known here she
will get more work, as she is a good tayloress, she
lately did some for Hannah Evans, with which she
was much pleased.
Deborah calls her little daughter Sarah, she is a
nice little girl, but I do not wish to love her more
than the rest, on that account, they are all interesting
