My Dear Aunt
On my way here from New Bedford, I was equally
surprised & gratified by receiving the handsome & acceptable pre-
-sent thou so kindly left for me at thy sister Hazzard s, and I
cannot refrain from writing to thee, expressly to thank thee
for it, and at the same time to assure thee, thou couldst not
have fixed upon any thing more exactly to my taste, or
that I more coveted than a crape shawl.-
The most suitable occasion too,for wearing it, presen-
-ted itself on my arrival here; that of the yearly meeting, at
which such shawls are very generally worn, and I had much
pleasure in using mine, not only on its own account, but
as a proof of kind remembrance in my Aunt Charity.
At this distance from New Bedford, we have heard no
particulars of your journey, but I congratulate thee and
my Uncle on having reached the end of it in safety.
Now I fancy that if I were seated beside thee, thou wouldst

with me etc etc, and therefore I will try to make thee
