Thou wilt be astonished my dear Aunt after the accts
you have had of my long confinement to receive tidings
of me so far from home- it is very unexpected to myself
though I have been gradually improving for two months.
I believe I wrote thee I was trying a poultice of rock-
weed, which I wore for a week or 10 days. It had the
effect which we had desired to produce by other applications
nearly 100 pustules came out & filled, resembling Dr.
Read said, those of small pox; they were very sore
but, I believe very useful, nothing before had roused
the circulations- when this application ended I received
from Phila 6 bottles of Swains celebrated Panacea, a
Syrup which has been very useful in purifying
the blood in some dreadful cases in that city,
& which is particularly recommended for scrofula
of which nature the Physicians generally are inclined
to think my case partakes, tho in a very mild form.
I have followed it for 2 months, taking a wine glass
full morning & evening, - this my friends have great
faith in, I am evidently better, but I attribute it
partly to our ceasing to make applications, a tight
swathe & flannel are all we are now doing- there
has appeared some change in my system since I
commenced with the Panacea. I more easily perspire
& after the 3rd bottle the blood was plainly felt forc-
ing its way into the blood vessels about the knee
& in the foot, so that they looked quite swollen before
the natural circulation was restored, which seems was
to be the case & that deadly coldness no longer troubles me
