Subject	Death of Thomas Rotch

Description	In a letter to family and friends, Charity Rotch expresses her deep sense of loss and grief and provides details of Thomas Rotch's death at the Ohio Yearly Meeting of Friends in Mt Pleasant, Ohio on Septeber 13 or 14th, 1823. Charity, who was in Kendal when word arrived that Rotch was ill rushed to Mt Pleasant by carriage. He apparently died of bilious fever that was prevalent in the Kendal area in early August of that year. He died peacefully at the home of William Judkins and was buried in an unmarked grave according to Quaker custom in the Quaker cemetary in Mt. Pleasant. News of Rotch's death reached New Bedford in a letter from Michael Graham's daughter, Deborah written 9/15.1823, informing the family of Rotch's death on the previous day after an illness of ten days. Medical expenses paid by Charity Rotch for care and burial of Thomas Rotch were: $40.00 to William Judkins in whose house Rotch died after a ten day illness, Isaac Parker: $10.00, coffin: $6.00, digging grave: $2.00 Charity was back in Kendal by 9/23. She never recovered from her loss: she died less than a year later at her home on Spring Hill in Kendal, OHio and was buried in the Quaker cemetary on Seneca Street in present day Massillon, Ohio. Full Text	B-226-4 [1823] in this my beloved fnds,Parents,brothers & sister; you are measureably partaking with me in the bitter Cup recently dispensed. I have hitherto,been in adequate to the task of addressing you;but this evening a little strength is afforded, and I hasten to improve it before it is withdrawn ~ tho I sensibly feel that Language is inadequate to convey the sensations Sustained, & I cannot at present work much on the subject; a subject too poignant in deed to dwell upon ah how uncertain are all mutable things, little did I think when we left home, to attend the yearly meeting the result woud have been so solemn- & had the disease have been less flattening,it would have afforded more opportunity to have conversed on many subjects;it would have been tolering to my mind on[unclear] ;but ah judge my dr frds;of the Suddenness of the change;when only within one hour of the final close,he was considered doing well for one so weak & low= & when the Dr ordered wine & that [unclear]of the [unclear] from which he had been raised several times in the course of the illness by stimulations applications very soon they ordered Brandy given him; & I gave it to him with the unremitting opportunity & when I percieved they thot him going I desired the Dr to
