Description	Postal delivery was not really up and running as we know it today until after the second half of the nineteenth century. Persons fortunate enough to be post masters such as Thomas Rotch, received mail gratus, otherwise, the receiver of the letter paid the postage. In his case, he asks Rotch to hold on to 2 letters and pass them on to his wife if the opportunity arises. The practice of sending a letter by someone going in a certain direction was unpredictable at best but not uncommon, mostly to save the cost of postage.7.4" x 9.8" (18.7 by 24.9 cm)

Full Text	B-199-1 West farm 9th mo 11th 1816 Esteemed Friend Thomas Rotch As I expect my wife will be in your part of the country, I take the liberty to inclose to thy care two letters one for her & the other for a friend in com- -pany as I think it is probable they will come into the state of Ohio by the way of Detroit. Shouldst thou hear of them & any way of conveyance offers please to forward the within & it will much oblige thy assured Friend. Thomas Walker If no opportunity offers please to keep them until thou hast one- Please to remember me affectionately to thy wife-
