Upper Sandusky 3rd Mo. 28 1820
Respected Friend,
This will inform thee that I am
now at this place with my family, an appointment as
Sub-Agent for Indian Affairs at this place had issued
from the the War Department in the 6th mo last for me
compensation 500.$ pr annum- I accepted for my compen
-sation to commence on the 1st of the 10th mo. Last, this delay
was owing to my appointment having been sent to Gov Cap
the Superintendant of Indian Affairs, and had lain in his
Office until he had returned from his north western Tour on the
Upper Lakes, it was him that urged my appointment, on the Govt.
At first I felt rather discouraged at the prospect,
the compensation was so small, and without any perquisity
whatever- but I now feel satisfied that I acted correctly
my wife although very delicate, and uncommonly timid
has been very agreeably disappointed, for instead of being
occationally interrupted and alarmed with the yells of drunk-
en Indians etc which she had anticipated she has found them
very kind, Modest and uncommonly Civil Neighbours, and
has yet I believe never seen one of them intoxicated, except
one or 2 of the Delawares who formerly resided at Green &
