                   Cincinnati 5th mo 29 1819
  Esteemed Friend
                  When I last wrote thee I mentioned
  having offered myself a candidate for the Office of Indian
  Agent for Upper Sandusky, I requested Philip Thomas
  of Baltimore to give me the earliest intimation of the
  result, that I might govern myself accordingly, and in
  the meantime had intimations given me that there
  remained scarcely a doubt of my succeeding; I however a
  a few weeks since recd Philip Thomas's reply in which
  he says "Soon after the rect of thy letter it was laid
  before the Committee on Indian Concerns, who after de-
  liberation addressed a communication to the Secy of War
  recommending thee as a suitable person to be appointed
  Agent at Sandusky etc."
       "In reply I have a letter from the Secy in which
  he states that upon examining the Law of Congress he
  does not find any authority to appoint an Agent at
  that place and that none will be appointed by him.
           I have no doubt but that if an Agent had
  been appointed, thou wouldst have been selected"
  thy letter form Philip was under date of 4th mo 9 last and
  in a few days after the reception of it, I discovered the
  [left margin]
  these sketches were thrown hastily together, place made due allowance in 
  compositions.
