Respected Friend
Thomas Rotch
Finding my Business here incompetent to
the support of my family has induced me to look toward the New
Countrys & having understood, that thou held up encouragement
to friends to settle in thy Neighbourhood - has almost induced me to
take a journey into that part of the Country - in the hope I may find
Sufficient employ thro the next summer to defray the expense of the
journey & afford such general information of my future government
as I could measurably rely upon - but the undertaking Seems so great
I almost despair & have taken the liberty to address thee on the Subject
& request thy friendly advise which I may probably receive by he time
I should be ready to set off - being acquainted with farming from early
life & by trade a Carpenter & part of a Wheelwright, I flatter myself my
havits of Industry would insure Success. If I can manage to get up there
shall probably realize in the Course of 12 months 800 to 1000 Dollars but
how far that would go thou art the best judge & I shall be governed measur-
ably by thy advice - may I therefore ask the favour of of thee to write by
returns of Mail stating all the difficulties. as I do not expect
to get along without many straits at first & my mind is prepared to
Encounter them, where there is a probability of obtaining a Competency
of which I see no prospect in this quarter - with Sincere regard
I am thy friend
My wife is absent but will venture to indent
her best love to to thyself & Wife in which united thy frd
