Wheeling Ohio County Virginia July 26th 1815
Thomas Rotch Sir
I received your letter of the 11
of this month on the 19th - last year my pros-
pects were such as to warrant me in becoming
obliged for my Brother but now Peace, that
greate blessing, in connection with that unaccou-
ntable belief of the American people in the
infalibility of Brittish manufactures has com
pletely Doomed my business for the present.
I must either tack ship intirely or have some
other business before I can accomplish any thing
for my self or any body else --what money
we expended at Estremediem is now in the
hand of Capt Demean which we dont realize
until next year - I could not raise the money
to pay you so soon as I should wish nor by the 10th
of next month short of making a sacrifice of^ at
least seventy five percent - I am wiling to give
you generous interest for what ever indulgence you
may afford me & I do seriously think
that the inconvenience you would suffer by not
having the money would not be one tenth what
I should have to lose to raise it- Brother Jacob is
now keeping School at the rate of near 300 $ the
year & you may depend on our best exertions to ren-
der you justice - I have hired a place about
five miles from Wheeling where I expect to continue
untill next year - give my Respects to your worthy
wife also to Capt Folger & Lady. Your friend
N. P. Atkinson
