Two capture state track titles for MLS
by PAUL MORTON
News-Times reporter
With two state champions
and two second place finishes
at the state championship
track meet, the Amherst Com-
; ets track team could be said
to have had a dream season.
.But, no, Greg Norman, you
did not dream you won the
Division I stale championship
in the 100-meter dash on
Saturday.
"We're still in shock. I still
can't believe it," Norman
said. "I woke up this morning
and I was like 'Did I juM
dream that?'"
Norman, a junior at Steele
High School, won the
. 100-meter dash in 10/4 seconds ahead of Jeremy Richardson of Huber Heights
Wayne, who finished in 10.79
seconds. He became the first
Comet to win Ihe 100 in the
80-year history of Amherst
trad-
He also finished second in
the 200-meter dash, running
the race in 21.74 seconds. He
said he was not even planning to run the 200 at state.
"I wasn't sure because I
was so inconsistent in the
200. I'd go run a really fast
time and then a not-so-fast
time," Norman said. "I did it
because it helped my 100
out: it made the 100 look a
lot shorter. So next year I
think I'll have to do the 400
a couple of times to make
the 200 look shorter."
The other Comet to take
home gold from state w_
Theresa Feldkamp, also a Junior, who took first place in
the 800-meter run. Feldkamp,
who placed fourth in the 800
as a freshman and third hut
year, said her two previous
trips io state gave her an
edge she needed to win.
"Every race you learn
something. My freshman year
I dkJn't really know what lo
do. And when I was a sophomore I just kind of hung out
at the end," she said. "But I
have a strategy now, so I
know what to do, and I know
how to win. I have a certain
time I want to run my first
200 meters and my first lap.
It's like you run the first lap
and race the second."
Although Feldkamp said
she was confident she belonged at the state meet, she
wasn't so sure she could win
iL Even when she led by IS
meters after Ihe first 400 meters, she needed a little extra
something for the final kick,
which Norman provided.
1 was yetting at her as
she was c-fwr**^ around the
last curve, 'Yeah, they're
right on yon,' so she'd keep
running hard," Norman said.
They were like 20 meters
Feldkamp said she heard
Norman, sad Ms cheering had
the dashed effect
"I was waking fcr
body to come,
