Description	Business records for the company, including additional photo logs, can be found in the Jeffrey Mining Machine Company Collection, call number MSS 1356.; The negative series were once maintained as individual collections. They have been reprocessed as one collection and the individual call numbers retained and series designations. Box numbers begin with number 1 at the beginning of each series.; Collection consists of the photographic records of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company documenting their growth, employees, facilities in Columbus, Ohio, and products. Images illustrate the use of Jeffrey products in amusement part rides and industries such as food processing and manufacturing. The coal mining industry, including coal-mining equipment, the evolution of mining methods, and working conditions for miners is well represented in the collection. Many photographs were produced for use in advertisements and company publications, such as Jeffrey Service, a company newsletter. Photographers employed by Jeffrey assigned identifying numbers to each of their photographic negatives and entered image descriptions in ledgers.; The Jeffrey Manufacturing Company based in Columbus, Ohio was a leading producer of mining, conveying, and heavy industrial equipment for nearly 100 years. The Company designed and built material handling products for a variety of uses, such as coal mining, farming, amusement park rides, earth-moving, lumber mills, and food processing. Company founder Joseph A. Jeffrey, was born in1836 in Vinton County, Ohio. In 1877 he found a coal mining machine designed by Francis Lechner and received financial backing to form the Lechner Mining Machine Company. Francis Lechner was the manager and Jeffrey the treasurer. In 1882, Jeffrey became president of the renamed Lechner Manufacturing Company. Five years later, Jeffrey bought out Lechner and changed the name to the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company. By 1888, the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company occupied four acres at First Ave. and North Fourth St. By 1914, the Company had expanded to cover 48 acres. Jeffrey was president of the Company until 1922 when his son, Robert H. Jeffrey assumed leadership. He died in 1928. At its peak after World War II, the Company employed over 4,500 Columbus residents. Changing energy demands and a decline in coal mining in the 1970s led to the sale of the Company to Dresser Industries of Dallas, Texas, in 1974. 32 factory buildings south of First Ave. were razed in 1987.; Exhibited: "Photography of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company" Ohio Historical Society Archives/Library, 2002-2005.
