Subject	Hopewell culture.; Mound-builders.; Tobacco pipes.; Woodland culture.
Description	Platform: 42.9 mm wide, 12.9 mm deep; Bowl: 51.5 mm high, 31.8 mm max. exterior, 14.8 mm interior diameter.; This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound. Most of the pipes were carved of Ohio pipestone, a silica-based material that can be easily carved when freshly quarried from the hills east of the Scioto River. The pipes represent a variety of animals significant to the Hopewell, including owls, wolves, deer and beaver. Skilled Hopewell craftsmen carved the pipes with flint knives and some are embellished with pearls or copper.; This item was on display in the First Ohioans Exhibit at the Ohio Historical Center (1986-2006).; This item is included in Windows to Our Collections at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus (opened July 2006).

Description-Abstract	Pipe has a curved platform. The bottom of the platform is curved; the top is flat. Mouthpiece end is straight; opposite end is curved. Bowl is set in the middle of the platform. It is tubular and widest where it meets the platform. The bowl flares out to a flat rim. The hole drilled from the mouthpiece is small. The pipe is made of catlinite that is light reddish brown, dark red and pale yellow. Areas of the bowl have been repaired with painted plaster. The platform has been broken into three pieces and glued back together.
