Subject	Hopewell culture.; Mound-builders.; Tobacco pipes.; Woodland culture.
Description	Platform: 40.9 mm wide, 13.8 mm deep; Bowl: 58.6 mm high, 25.3 mm exterior, 15.8 mm interior diameter.; This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound. Most of the pipes were carved of Ohio pipestone, a silica-based material that can be easily carved when freshly quarried from the hills east of the Scioto River. The pipes represent a variety of animals significant to the Hopewell, including owls, wolves, deer and beaver. Skilled Hopewell craftsmen carved the pipes with flint knives and some are embellished with pearls or copper.; This item was on display in the First Ohioans Exhibit at the Ohio Historical Center (1986-2006).; This item is included in Windows to Our Collections at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus (opened July 2006).

Description-Abstract	Pipe has a flat-bottomed platform that tapers slightly to the mouthpiece end. The corners of the platform are rounded. There is a ridge on the top that runs the length of the hole drilled for the mouthpiece. The bowl is tubular and set in the middle of the platform. It is widest in the middle and tapers to the top and bottom. The top flares to a small, flat rim. It is made of catlinite that is dusky red and light red in color. The top of the mouthpiece is very dusky red. There is some copper staining (moderate green) on the bottom near the mouthpiece. The pipe was broken into five pieces and has been glued together. There is a small chip at the rim of the bowl. There is a small area of painted plaster on the platform.
