Title	Pipe, Platform Rabbit Effigy.
Subject	Hopewell culture.; Woodland culture.; Mound-builders.; Effigies.; Tobacco pipes.
Description	Platform: 43 mm wide max., 90.5 mm long, 5.5 mm deep; Effigy: 43 mm high, 48 mm long, 29 mm wide; Bowl: 31 mm high, 15 mm diameter.; This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound. Most of the pipes were carved of Ohio pipestone, a silica-based material that can be easily carved when freshly quarried from the hills east of the Scioto River. The pipes represent a variety of animals significant to the Hopewell, including owls, wolves, deer and beaver. Skilled Hopewell craftsmen carved the pipes with flint knives and some are embellished with pearls or copper.; This item was on display in the First Ohioans Exhibit at the Ohio Historical Center (1986-2006).; This item is included in Windows to Our Collections at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus (opened July 2006).

Description-Abstract	Rabbit effigy shows the animal sitting on the pipe platform. Front and hind legs are shown in bas relief on the bowl; feet are not indicated. Facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) are indicated by narrow incised lines. Ears, which project above the head, are restored. The anterior portion of the platform also appears to have been extensively restored. The posterior part of the platform appears to have been damaged prehistorically; edges are smoothed off to form an irregular outline. Most surfaces, including the interior of the bowl, are smoothed. Few striations are visible. The effigy pipe is made of dark grayish brown Ohio pipestone that has dark reddish brown stains.
