Description	Collection consists of glass plate negatives. There are corresponding modern contact prints made for a portion of the negatives. Identifying information, such as the people(s) pictured, the location or the date of the photographs is recorded on some negatives. Many of the locations recorded on negatives are small towns in West Virginia. A few negatives were signed by the photographer. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. While many photographs are posed portraits, there are also examples of more casual photographs that document daily life, including people working. Many people are pictured at their homes or businesses. Personal property, such as automobiles, buggies, children's toys, horses, musical instruments and wagons, can be seen in some photographs. Examples of posthumous and memorial photographs, such as portraits of deceased infants and families visiting cemeteries or graves are also found. There are some town views. The photographer Albert J. Ewing, his brother, Frank and the Ewing home are also pictured in the collection.; Traveling photographer Albert James Ewing captured the faces of thousands of turn-of-the-20th century Ohioans and West Virginians. He was born in 1870 to Marquis, or Marcus, and Eliza J. Ewing. In the 1905 directory for Marietta, Ohio he is listed as living in Lowell, Adams Township. The 1907-1908 directory for Marietta records Ewing as a resident of Watertown Township, Watertown. His occupation is listed in the 1910 Census as a photographer who operated his own gallery. He is actually counted in the 1910 Census twice, both in Ohio and West Virginia. There is a negative in the collection signed 'Ewing Bros.' It is likely that Albert recruited his younger brother Frank to help him with his business. Evidence indicates that Ewing ran his photography business from a floating studio that traveled the Ohio River and docked for a time in Watertown, Ohio. After 1910, he is not found in federal Census records.
