Title	Pipe, Platform Hawk Effigy.
Subject	Hopewell culture.; Woodland culture.; Mound-builders.; Tobacco pipes.; Stone carving.
Description	Platform: 94 mm long, 43 mm wide (36 mm anterior, 32 mm posterior), 7 mm deep; Bowl: 44 mm high, 15.5 mm diameter; Effigy: 75 mm long, 33 mm wide.; This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound. Most of the pipes were carved of Ohio pipestone, a silica-based material that can be easily carved when freshly quarried from the hills east of the Scioto River. The pipes represent a variety of animals significant to the Hopewell, including owls, wolves, deer and beaver. Skilled Hopewell craftsmen carved the pipes with flint knives and some are embellished with pearls or copper.; This item was on display in the First Ohioans Exhibit at the Ohio Historical Center (1986-2006).; This item is included in Windows to Our Collections at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus (opened July 2006).

Description-Abstract	Effigy of a hawk stands on the pipe platform with head forward and wings folded with wing tips crossed over tail. Legs and feet are carved in bas relief on the bowl and platform, respectively. Depiction of talons is quite clear. Details of feather patterns are very carefully executed, differentiated between breast and leg feathers (zig zag lines) and looping lines and parallel incisions that define the wings. Eyes are drilled (approximately 4 mm in diameter), but show no evidence of being inset. Fine striations are visible on effigy and platform. Concentric striations can be seen in the lower part of bowl. The upper part is somewhat gouged. Pipe appears to be completely undamaged. Anterior end of platform is squared; anterior end is slightly rounded. The pipe is made with Ohio pipestone that is dark grayish brown with darker mottling.
