part
of a
large
collection
of
pipes
found
at
Tremper
Mound
.
Most
of the
pipes
were
carved
of
Ohio
pipestone
, a
silica-based
material
that
can
be
easily
carved
when
freshly
quarried
from the
hills
east
of the
Scioto
River
. The
pipes
represent
a
variety
of
animals
significant
to the
Hopewell
,
including
owls
,
wolves
,
deer
and
beaver
.
Skilled
Hopewell
craftsmen
carved
the
pipes
with
flint
knives
and
some
are
embellished
with
pearls
or
copper.

was on
display
in the
First
Ohioans
Exhibit
at the
Ohio
Historical
Center
(1986-2006).

Mills
as a "
paroquete
"
shows
the
bird
standing
on the
pipe
platform
with
wings
folded
and
wing
tips
crossed
over
the
tail
. The
hawk's
head
is
turned
at a
right
angle
to the
long
axis
of the
platform
.
Legs
and
talons
are
engraved
very
realistically
on the
bowl
and
platform
,
respectively
.
Eyes
are
drilled
(2.5
mm
diameter)
and
inset
with
pearls
. A
considerable
amount
of
detail
is
shown
of
feathers
around
the
head
, on
legs
, and on the
underside
of
bird
.
Tip
of
tail
was
broken
prehistorically
.
Effigy
and
platform
show
slight
striations
;
bowl
interior
is
smooth
.
Both
effigy
and
platform
were
broken
and have been
refitted
.
Anterior
end
of
platform
is
squared
,
posterior
end
is
slightly
rounded
.
Slight
prehistoric
damage
along
left
side
of
anterior
portion
of
platform
. The
pipe
is
made
of
olive
gray
Ohio

mottled

darker
olive
gray
