pipe
is
part
of a
large
collection
of
pipes
found
at
Tremper
Mound
.
Most
of the
pipes
were
carved
of
Ohio
pipestone
, a
silica-based
material
that
can
be
easily
carved
when
freshly
quarried
from the
hills
east
of the
Scioto
River
. The
pipes
represent
a
variety
of
animals
significant
to the
Hopewell
,
including
owls
,
wolves
,
deer
and
beaver
.
Skilled
Hopewell
craftsmen
carved
the
pipes
with
flint
knives
and
some
are
embellished
with
pearls
or
copper.

item
was on
display
in the
First
Ohioans
Exhibit
at the
Ohio
Historical
Center
(1986-2006).

Windows

at the

in
Columbus

standing
on the
pipe
platform
.
Basic
facial
features--cheek
patch
,
feathers
on
head--are
indicated
with
incised
lines
in a
manner
identical
to those of the
other
hawk
effigies
in the
William
D
.
Tremper
Collection
.
Eyes
are
shallowly
drilled
(approximately
3
mm
in
diameter)
. There
is
one
band
of
zig-zag
lines
on the
bird's
chest
.
Wing
feathers
are
indicated
by
parallel
and
cross-hatched
lines
.
Wing
tips
are
restored
as
being
crossed
over
the
tail
.
Legs
and
feet
are not
indicated
. The
surface
of the
pipe
has
weathered
,
so
some
details
may
have been
lost
. The
left
side
of the
bowl
just
below
the
left
wing
and the
right
side
of
bowl
just
above
the
platform
have been
restored
.
Curvature
of the
platform
is
much
greater
than any of the
other
Tremper
effigies
.
Although
most
pipes
excavated
from the
Tremper
mound
are
made
of
pipestone
, this
pipe
is
made
of
coral
limestone
that
is
light
gray
and
pale
brown
.
