Mound

Most
of the
pipes
were
carved
of
Ohio
pipestone
, a
silica-based
material
that
can
be
easily
carved
when
freshly
quarried
from the
hills
east
of the
Scioto
River
. The
pipes
represent
a
variety
of
animals
significant
to the
Hopewell
,
including
owls
,
wolves
,
deer
and
beaver
.
Skilled
Hopewell
craftsmen
carved
the
pipes
with
flint
knives
and
some
are
embellished
with
pearls
or
copper.

item
was on
display
in the
First
Ohioans
Exhibit
at the
Ohio
Historical
Center
(1986-2006).

Effigy
pipe
shows
the
front
quarters
of a
black
bear
.
Front
legs
are
shown
in
bas
relief
on the
front
of the
bowl
. The
bear's
face
is
well
defined
. The
mouth
is
a
V-shaped
incised
line
.
Eyes
(3
mm
in
diameter)
are
drilled
and
inset
with
copper
. An
incised
line
extends
between
the
eye
and
ears
from the
right
cheek
over
the
forehead
to the
left
cheek
. The
ears
are
erect
; the
left
ear
has been
damaged
.
Striations
are
visible
on the
platform
but not on the
effigy
. The
posterior
half
of the
bowl
has been
restored
, as has a
small
section
of the
platform
along
the
right
side
of the
effigy
. There are
some
chips
missing
along
the
right
edge
of the
platform
near
the
anterior
end
. The
anterior
end
is
squared
,
while
the
posterior
end
is
rounded
. The
effigy
pipe
is
made
of
Ohio
pipestone
that
ranges
in
color
from
light
olive
gray
to
olive
gray
.
