YOU SHOULD KNOW . . .
^ Before the year Ls over a dis¬ tinguished industrialist who ftin- des himself as a diplomat, and who received a special award for his great friendship toward the Jews, will be exposed as having cooperated with the Fascist anti- Semites of an Axis country. . . What's this about a new "Amer¬ ican nationalist" party being in the offing, with Its sponsors in eluding anti-Semite Gerald K. Smith and -- Captain Eddie Ricltenbacker? , . . We're told that an official publication of the Polish Government-in-Exile re¬ printed the Nazi report on the Warsaw ghetto battle without giving "credit" to the source . . . In this "report" the Jewish de¬ fenders of Warsaw are called dangerous Communists . . . We are investigating further , . . .FBWISH NEWS . . . te The Zionist Emergency Com¬ mittee, now clicking on all cyl¬ inders under the leadership of Dr. Abba H. Sliver, will Issue its own publication, to be called "Palestine" , . . (It is intended for both Jewish and non-Jewish readers . . j All the.publicity dis¬ tortions notwithstanding, the decision of the interim sessions of the American Jewish Confer¬ ence, concluded last week, amounts to this: The Confer¬ ence has been put on Ice and 1 vrlU huictldiv4iiiough it& several constituent organizations until the next session . . . What hap¬ pened to that slogan of "Unity?'' . . Believe it or not, the only ad in the 24-page October issue of The Answer, organ of the Conunittee for a Jewish Army, is an announcement by a New York funeral parlor . . There's an Army camp in. Iceland that has, at its entrance, a huge "Welcome" sign in sixteen lang¬ uages . . . German isn't one of them, but the greeting "Shalom" appears on' the sign, In Hebrew letters. , ,
LITERARY, DEPT. . , . ^ Now that Pierre van Paas¬ sen's new book, "The Forgotten Ally", Is sweeping the country, we may tell you that before its publication effort-s were made .to suppress it , . . It is a mat¬ ter of record that it was the Ute Hebrew literary critic Reuben Brainln who discovered and sponsored Saul Tchernichovsky, the Hebrew poet who recently passed away . . . Yet the local Hebrew press ignored this bio¬ graphical fact . . .The Hebraists who have delved In Jewish poli¬ tics cannot forget that Reuben Brainln, during the last years of his life, administered .some public spankings to them for their reactlonarism . . . Probably they would have tempered their eulogies of Tchernichovsky If they had known that the He¬ brew poet left Instructions for the posthumous return to the Finnish government of the deco¬ ration It had bestowed upon 'him . . . Brainln and Tchernich¬ ovsky saw eye to eye on Inter¬ national affairs . . , Strange, but true: The Norweiglan Nobel Prize winner SIgrld Undest, now living in this country, wrote a splendid article on anti-Semit¬ ism after the war . , . Yet In her conclusion, when she appeals for support to destroy anti- Semitism, she carefully avoids mentioning Russia . . . Could it be true that Mme Undest is, as ¦we haVe heard said, violently (Contlnue<i on Page 8)
NEW YORK (JPS) — Mrs. Moses P. Epstein was elected National President of Hadassah at an uncontested election at the close of the twenty-nlnth annual convention of the Wo¬ men's Zionist Organization.
Addressing the convention. Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, co- chairman of the American Zion¬ ist Emergency Council, lashed out at Arthur Hays Sulzberger, Joseph IVI, Proskauer and Less- ing Rosenwald as the forces be¬ hind the American Jewish Com¬ mittee's decision to wlthdra\y from the American Jewish Con¬ ference,
He pointed out that the New York "Times, owned by Mr. .Sulz¬ berger, is "the only American newspaper printing accounts of the trials of the alleged gun¬ runners by the British in Jeru- .salem, which prosecution Is be¬ ing conducted for the sole pur¬ pose of smearing the Jews."
Of Lessing Rosenwald, he said: "He Is tiie only Jewish 'America FIrster', whc' has refused to con¬ tribute to the United Jewish Ap¬ peal because some of the funds go to Palestine".
He described Joseph M. Pros¬ kauer, president of tiie American Jewish Committee, as belonging to the same coterie. The anti- Zionist action of these men, he said, was "just another pattenr of opposition to our cause Which comes periodically, opposition to a pattern that Is perhaps the noblest and bravest in Jewish history, the Zionist movement". Other officers of Hadassah also chpjren at the convention were six vice-presidents, IVIrs. Samuel W. Halprln, Mrs. Herman Shul¬ man and Mrs. Sundel Donlger, all of New York; Mrs. Jack Good¬ man, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Rap¬ hael Tourover, of Washington and Mrs. Adolph Sleroty, of Los Angeles.
At an earlier session. Dr.' Na- hum Goldmann extended to Ha¬ dassah the felicitations of the Jewish Agency. In his remarks Dr. Goldmann pointed out that the first duty of Jewry In rela¬ tion to Palestine Is lo comlwt the White Paper which is scheduled to take lull, effect next spring.

NEW YORK (JPS)—Charging that the Ambrican Jew¬ ish Committee's withdrawal from the American Jewish Conference was "disruptive" and jeopardized American Jewish unity, leaders and organizations throughout the country joined in denouncing the Committee's decision. Swept along by the mounting tide of resentment, a num¬ ber of affiliated organizations have already announced their resignations from the Confimittce, with others considering similar action.
A resolution adopted by the American Zionist Emergency Council charges the Committee's withflrawal was determined by a "rule or ruin" policy and- that the Committee's position on Pal¬ estine "would liquidate the Jew¬ ish National Home". Scoffing at the Committee's assurances that It is prepared to co-operate with other Jewish organizations in fields of activity where unity of action Is possible, the Council points out that the Committee "has always preached unity but evidently only on Its own terms".
Statements of rebuke were also I.ssued by the organizations that have resigned from the Committee In retaliation for Its withdrawal from the Confer¬ ence. The organizations that have officially announced their resignations are: Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America; the Free Sons of Is¬ rael and the Rabbinical Assem¬ bly of America, "Secession Opens Door to An- arehy'", Robbls Say -.» The Executive Council of the Rabbinical Assembly, voting to retire from the American Jew¬ ish Committee, adopted a reso¬ lution which declares that the Committee's withdrawal from the Conference "Jeopardizes the efforts of American Jewry on behalf of World Jewry". After explaining that, "ever desirlous of developing a responsible democratically chosen leader¬ ship for American Jewry", It had "greeted with joy the con¬ vocation of the American Jew¬ ish Conference", the Rabblnicai Assembly states:
"The resignation of the Amer¬ ican Jewish Committee from the American Jewish Confer¬ ence hecuu.se it differs with one of the decisions of the Confer¬ ence sets a precedent which, if left uncorrected, would make responsible democratically chos¬ en leadership In American Jew¬ ry impo.ssible. We respect the right of the American Jewish Committee to differ with any decision of the Conference and to utilize all resources at its dis¬ posal to persuade the Conference to Its point of view. But Amer¬ ican tradition has surely taught us that .secession opens the door to anarchy. In the present critical moment in .lewish his¬ tory It jeopardizes the efforts of American Jewry on iiebalf of world Jewry,
"The withdrawal of the Amer¬ ican Jewish Committee from the Conference regretfully leaves us no alternative but that of ter¬ minating our affiliation with the American Jewish Committee. We fervently hope that ways will yet be .sought and found for the American Jewish Com¬ mittee to resume its place within the framework of the American Jewish Conference and would again make it possible for the Rabbinical Assembly of America to collaborate with the Ameri- can Jewish Committee for tlie furtherance of our many com¬ mon purposes in Jewish llfpj' (Continued on Page Sf
