N. Y. POST URGES CONGRESS TO ADMIT JEWISH REFUGEES
Lt. TopoJosky wm Relate Experiences In Battle At Attu
NB'W YORK (JPS)—Hailing the step taken by the National Democratic Club and the. Nation¬ al Republican Club In urging Congress "to amend our Immi¬ gration legislation so as to per¬ mit the free entry Into thI.s coun¬ try of any person who Is the vic¬ tim of religious persecution by the Axis", the New York Post editorially declares that "this simple act of humanity and just- Ice should be'listed among the first order of business".
In order fo enable the refugees to e.'scape to the United States, the Post suggests: "Congress can lend the weight or its authority to a program for enlisting neu¬ tral nations and international or¬ ganizations like the Red Cross to aid In getting the Nazi vic¬ tims out of Germany and the satellite countries.
"And It can pa.ss a joint reso¬ lution that American ships carry¬ ing men and cargo into, say, the Mediterranian — now an Anglo- American lake — must not re¬ turn In ballast while men and women in flight from religious persecution wait at the docks for transportation . , .
"These are actions which should be high pp on the Con¬ gressional calendar. And with them.Bhould be^otlon to put the, .'wej'|ht''.oi;,theSeti9te/helilriWrtlw. message of tw6 6f Its distinguish^ ed members —Sen. Wagner, a Pemocrat, and Sen. McNary, a Republican — to the Zionist Or¬ ganization of America canfer- ence at Columbus Ohio.
"Palestine should be complete¬ ly opened now to provide a ref¬ uge for Jews escaping the Nazi doom, 'and It should be made a national home for millions of Jews after the war with tho sympathetic help of the United Nations', say the Senators.
"We agree. And the first ancl Immediate necessary step is to prevail upon the British Govern¬ ment to rescind Its White Paper of 19.'19 restricting Jewish imnil- grtition into Palestine.
"It is a relic of the clays when Ilrltain was in the mood of ap¬ peasement, before she found her .soul again under fire: when Arab zealots ancl others could exercise Influence to the point of blackmail.
"The' Senate of the United States is a mighty influence in foreign affairs by virtue ot Its constitutional powers over treat¬ ies.
"Let it speak now in behalf of a decent democratic world. Let It speak In behalf of the 4,000,000 still alive".
