THAT .lEWISH ARMY
We wonder where Broadway columnist Danton Waliter got this story, which he published In his column lasl wcelt ... "A story is due to breal< soon", he announced, "ahout an under¬ ground Jewish army operating in Palestine, numbering ahout 10,000 fully equipped men, with a reserve of 1.5.000 others, ready to defend their homeland when the time comes . . . Their arms, the story goes, wore liought from the Arabs" . . . The story, of course, is pure (if not itosher) baloney . . . The official Zionist leadership still contends that nothing can he done ahout a Jewish army before the British government permits its forma¬ tion . . . The New ZionLst Organi¬ zation, on the other hand, be- heves ihat Great Britain's hand must be forred by .lewish action .... So before long the New Zion¬ ist Organization is going to start a registration campaign in this country asl<ing Jewish youths whether they would volunteer in a Jewish army providing their draft obligations and U. S. Gov¬ ernment regulations permit . . . The Revisionist leaders think that if a sufficient number of Jews signify their intention of joining up, British official circles ¦.vWUl'iBoye.. faster on^the whole
- blitzltrleg against Russia, he will sponsor the most stupendous pogroms in Jewish history ... This in line with his promise to "save" Russia by exterminating her "Jewish Communists" . . . Incidentally, don't miss Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver's chapter about Jewish life in the Soviet Union, in his book "The World Crisis and Jewish Survival" . . . It is a courageous, sincere ap¬ praisal which many of the rabid Zionist antl-Sovietists will find far from pleasing . . . We tion't, as a rule, have much ct)nfidence in Mr. Wythe Williams' predic¬ tions or "private information" We hope, however, that he was right the other day when he an¬ nounced that he itnows that Julius Streicher, anti-Semite Number One of Nazlland, has been executed . . . And when he told us that Mr Hitler is a virtual prisoner in the hands of the German army we fervently murmured: "Allowei" . . . Mem¬ bers of the Nazi embassy staff at Washington are taking bets that the Red Army will have ceased to be a military factor by July 27th . . They've found few American military experts ready to risk their money by taking up such a wager, but it is said that several Soviet embassy staff members have, through stooges, placed quite a bit of money on the proposition that July 27th wiii see the Russo- German-war in a still undecided state . . . Right here, incidentally, we want to remark that we don't like Danton Walker's re¬ mark about the "biilzkrieg" be¬ tween Russia and Germany . . . It sounds like a crack that might have originated in Bund¬ lst circles . . .

Says Defense Program Has Not Curbed Civil Liberties
As the current United Jewish Fund Drive entered its third wcelt, all indications point tliat less than 20% of tho quota remains to be raised. Despite the intense heat, the worlters in the Men's, Women's and Junior divisions arc intensifying their efforts to attain their goal within the next ten days. Urgent picas were renewed to the Jews of Columbus this week by Campaign Chairman, Robert Schiff, to make every effort to subscribe the full amouiit set for the 1!)41 drive. These funds, he said, arc needed at once to meet the imperative needs overseas, in Palestine, for the refugees in America, and for the various other cul¬ tural, protective and educational national agencies to which this drive contributes.
Resitonsihility for the success or failure of this drive rests not on our hands or on the hands ot Ihe voluntary workers, who have sn graciously and conRcientiousl,v Riven of their time, but squarely and direct ly nn the entire Jewish (Ommunity here." Mr. Schiff de- dared.
'¦Man.v men and women here", he contlnuefl. "seem to feel that this appeal does not affect them closely, as it is for outside needs. Hut I want lo say right here and now. that the condition of the .lewish people in Europe and i'.'ilestine directly affects every¬ one of us here. Disregarding the fact that eac^h one of us in Colum¬ lius holds in his own hands the fate of one or more of his breth¬ ren in the terrible ghettos of Europe, the destruction of the Jewry of Europe and Palestine will make It impossible for the Je\v3^,pi America and the West- Jews we'cah nlvly survlv^if oS?- brethren abroad survive Once let us forget our duties aiid obli¬ gations as Jews to our brethren, and we perish as Jews," conclud¬ ed Mr. Schiff.
The drive will continue and it is hoped that the extra effort the woi'kers will make during the next ten days will accomplish the desired goal Columhus has prom¬ ised fo raise for the great hu- maniijiriiin causes for which the iippcal this year is intended. rules Set Now Records Twenty-c i g h t communities Ihrf>ughout the country have estal)lishe(l new records of response in over - the - top cami)aigns in behalf of the Unit¬ efl .lewish Appeal for Refugees, Oversells Needs and Palestine, it was announced this week. Deter¬ mined to answer the Nazi blitz¬ krieg of terror against tbe Jew¬ ish rieopie and democracy with concrete action, twenty Jewish communities oversubscrib¬ ed their quotas during the "past fortnight in all-out drives for the unifietl war emergency effort in behalf of the Joint Distribution Committee, the Uniled Palestine Appeal and the National Refugee Service.
Reports reaching the national headquarters of the United Jew¬ ish Appeal indicate that during the month of June American Jewry achieved a new high in mobilizing Itself to bring hope and help to harassed Jews In European lands, to the Jewish community of Palestine and to the refugees In the United States. The over-the-top results in im portant communities throughout the country this year were con sidered especially encouraging since the quotas In almost all of them had been set at a higher mark than In any other previous campaign.
