L. M. Birkhead, national director of the organi¬ zation, -speaking to representa¬ tives of leading religious, edu¬ cational, tratei;nal and civic bodies, dfescribed the drive as a "now or never effort" to count¬ eract the flood of anti-democra¬ tic, un-American propaganda which has been given "such ex¬ tensive currency in this coun¬ try for the past six years." Launched as a local movement in Kansas City in 1037, Friends of Democracy gained national prominence under the leader¬ ship of Mr. Birkhead who de¬ clared the purposes of the or¬ ganization are to "arouse de¬ votion to the true spirit of the Constitution of the United States as the bulwark of Demo¬ cracy; to uphold Democracy against Nazi, Fascist, Commun¬ ist and all other subversive movements in America; to de¬ velop loyalty to Democracy by safe-guarding freedom of speech, press, pulpit, and as¬ sembly, and to shake ott fear, inertia, laziness and selfishness, Mr. Birkhead has spent a number of,years Investigating and exposing the leaders of tlie numerous un-American and sub¬ versive organizations, ' He was first to throw the spotlight on General George Van Horn' Mose¬ ley, recently under fire by the Dies Committee.
