Mayer, Jolson, Ben Bernie and oE course J. Warner and S., Goldwyn The rivalry between Warner and GaUlwyn is of course .still going full speed...Gojdwyn announced that he would contribute whatever Warner did So a few of the gentlemen tried to persuade Warner to increase his §5,000 donation.. .Warner replied: "I couldn't be that'mean to Goldwyn".i.The .sum raised that night was $52,000.. .Maurice Schwartz finally realized hts life's am- Iiition when he pocketed a contract from Metro - Goldwyn - Mayer... .The Yiddish stiir is to act, write and direct for Metro .Wc read the other day the following miniature descriptions: Mae West, the traveling salesman's , daughter; Eddie Cantor, the trademark of any eye and ear hospital; Pant Muni, Hamlet in modern clothes; Fannie Hurst, an old-time movie producer's idea of sensuousncss... So Thia la Paris You may not know it but Andre Spire, French Jewish poet, is the new under¬ secretary of Agriculture in France, which does not prevent him from organizing a society to be known as the "Friends of the Burned Book". ..Alexander Rosen¬ berg, counsellor at the Soviet Embassy in Pans, is regarded as. one of the niost astute diplomats in the Soviet. service .There are now five Jewish emigrant daily newspapers published in Paris... James Waterman Wise is expected in Paris about June 20 and will join Pierre Van Paas.sen for a study of European Jewish conditions, at the Cafe Du Dome .. .The reports that Pierre Van Paasseii^ who has just returned from a successful lecture tour in the USA has followed Ainiee Palliere in going over to Judaism are not correct.. .Pierre is. at present in the Saar investigating Nazi activities He will describe his impression for the Seven Arts...Those awful illustrations in Julius Streicher's I'Dcr Stuermer" are! reproductions of old prints published by Edouard Dumont in "La France Juiye,"! some years ago...Henri Torres, the Clarence Darrow of France, has informed Hitler that he intends to attend the trial of Thaelman, the communist leader,, at Berlin, as ,an observer for the French bar ,
So This Iq Moscow The Soviet government is ordering young orange trees in Palestine for trans¬ planting in the Crimean Riviera.. .The official hostess of the American Embassy in Moscow is a Polish Jewess who re¬ cently became the wife of Embassy Coun¬ sellor Wiley... The Soviet Consul in New York, To- varish Leonid M. Tolonski, is a fluent writer and speaker in Yiddish..-The re¬ cent Birobidjan celebration, at Madison Square did not rate a single line in the Anglo-Jewish daily of our land, although the New York Times gave it almost a column... Louis Fischer, the Nation's Soviet correspondent, spent his recent vacation in Palestine, looking over the grounds where he camped as a Jewish legionnaire in the days when he .was ready to give his blood for "British Im perialism". ..When Lord Marley was quotable in the Zionist press, he was a great guy. but now that he is devoting his energies to the possibilities of Jewish emigration to Birobidjan, he is being treated as one "of those lords gone wrong"...
You Don't Say The Nazis now accuse Dollfuss of be¬ ing of Jewish descent and the "Stuermer" says that the Pope is the illegitimate son of a Dutch Jewess, Neuman by name... As we predicted last week. Union City, N. J., hotbed of Nazi activities, has ban¬ ned all Hitlerite meetings.. .Wall Street is talking about huge funds set aside by the Nazi propagandists to buy favorable propaganda in the financial sections of the New Vork dailies... Now that Carl Byoir, the Jewish press agent for the Naiis has been put on the spot, Mr. Ivy (Continued on page z)
REP, C. V. TRUAX OF OHIO ISSUES STATEMENT
POGROM AHEAD
"Jews WiU Pay for Collapse of German Economic System"
WASHINGTON, D. C. (WNS)— RestntincnL at alleged extravagance on the part bf the Congressional Committee investigating Nazi Activities is blamed for the refusal of the House of Repre- .'sentativcs to grant the committee an ad¬ ditional $'10,000. By a standing vote of ITU to 37 the House gave the committee an additional $20,000, just half of what it asked. Representative Warren of North Carolina, chairman of the Ac¬ counts CommitteCj told the House that] the investigating committee had failed tol keep expenses for employes at a mini¬ mum. He presented figures showing that the committee had hired a counsel at .t5-"i5.55 a month, 13 investigators at sala¬ ries ranging from $250 a month and ex¬ penses to $145 a month pnd expenses; two stenographers at $137.50 a month; one messenger at $20 a week; and one secretary (formerly "janitor" of the Im¬ migration Committee) at ij^^SO a month, plus $yc( as "clerk" of the Immigration Committee.
In defense of the Committee, Repre¬ sentative John McCormack of Massa¬ chusetts, declared that "the evidence dis¬ closed conditions I never knew existed in this country. I never thought we would connect foreign governments with send¬ ing instructions to this country to array American against American because of religious differences. We want to in¬ vestigate communistic activities and find where the money comes from," Repre¬ sentatives Taylor and Jenkins, ^tepubli- can members of the committee, also urged the House to grant the $'10,000.
Rumors of a lobby \vorking to kill the probe of Nazi propaganda were heard in Washington during the debate. . Rep¬ resentative Truax of Ohio said that since the "money has gone to favor friends", the committee ought to. be abolished en¬ tirely. R.epresentative Terry M. Car¬ penter of Nebraska told the House that the Germans in his state felt resentful of the committee's inquiry. . Replying to Carpenter, Chairman McCormack de¬ clared . "the gentleman ought to be ashamed bf himself."'-
BY PIERRE VAN PAASSEN Seven Arts Staff Writer
in. thi.'i article, Pierre Van Paassen,\ noted foreign correspondent, analyses the future of German Jezvry. Van Paassen sees darlc clouds aver Germany and fore¬ sees Hitlerite pogroms in the Fuehrer's supreme attempt to find a scapegoat for his failure to ."inve Germany from, col¬ lapse. This article, terrifying in its clar^ ity, is a clarion call' to world Jewry to unite and smash Germaii Fascism.—The Editor.
Gold coverage of the Reichsmark. has sunk to four per cent. This means that the Nazi ship of ."itate is heading' full speed for the rocks of iunation. On the bridge of that lurching vessel a vulgar row has broken out over control of the wheel. The crew is growing sullen, After one year of sailing the happy port of prosperity is as far away as ever. Things are bad in the Third Reich. "Dis¬ astrously bad," admits the Berliner Tage¬ blatt. There will be no money to pay the storm troopers after June, and half of these heroes are to be sent on fur¬ lough. There are rumors that the popu¬ lation is to he put on rations, as in war¬ time. Exports are dwindling. Falsifying unernployment figures no longer works. Gernian uidustry, in so far it is npt oc¬ cupied with war-equipnient, has virtually come to a standstill.
If Adolf Hitler had succeeded in ful¬ filling his prQmise of bread and well- being for the masses; if there really was an economic upswing; if the Nazi state could point, to a consolidation of' power, instead' of being forced to take the recent vote of the Gewerkschaften— the Nazi labor unions—as a smack in the face (Hitler's Vertrauungsinaenner [men of confidence], polled less than one-third of the votes) ; if there was but one single
gleichgescbaltcte pres.s in spite of all this, the German working class, is not witt) the Nazis yet. Don't you sec that if the inass of the workers really believed in what Hitler call.q tho Jewish menace, if they had really taken the lie campaign I against tbe Jews for Gospel truth, they would have done what the Nazis havii incessantly urged, and there would not be a Jew alive in Germany today.
Tt is the German working class, Marx ist in every bone and fibre, which has so far prevented the annihilation of the Jews. Every day, every hour, in speeches, in newspaper articles, in radio appeals, the mas.ses arc invited to rise in spon¬ taneous indignation and settle their ".scores" with the Jews. So far they| haven't heeded these blood appeals. "The German working class knows nothing of anti-Semitism," remarked the Manchester Guardian a year ago. After a year of ceaseless "hetzing" .and incitement by the NaEi Fuehrers, the German working class knows nothing yet about anti-Semitism, unless it is this—that anti-Semitism is a trick to divert their attention from their real plight, to turn their anger and pent- up-hatred away from their real enemies. Hitler's campaign to turn the workers of Germany into anti-Semites has failed. But this does not mean that the Jews are safe. Just because the workers won't be led into a sterile, anti-Jewish action, the .leaders grow the more embittered against the Jews. The passive'attitude of the workers in the presence of the year-long hysterical Juden-Hetze shows Hitler and his associates that they have wasted their time, that the workers see through the Fuehrer's designs, that they see the fraudulent character of tlie issues he has raised, that they are not deceived
German - American Congress
Refuses to Endorse
DAWA Boycott
CLEVELAND (WNS)—Nazi con¬ trol nf German-American societies was revealed as not being as great as was believed when tlie third annual German- American Congress refused to give its .sanction to the," counter-boycott agaiiisl the Jews organized by the DAW.\ on the ground that it was "economically un¬ sound with all the possibilities of becom¬ ing a racket." The Congress also re¬ fused to scat dcrcgatcs of the DAWA but allowed them to remain 111 the con¬ vention hall. Delegates of the Steuben Society led the hitter fight against en¬ dorsement of the DAWA. The best the DAWA advocates could get out of the Congress was a resolution protesting against the boycott on German goods and a plea to German-Americans to deny their patronage to establishments that do not handle German goods. The Congress also called on the United States Govern¬ ment to "take effective steps to stop the boycott of German goods."

ENGLAND MOVES TO CURB VIOLENCE OF FASCISTS
LONDON (WNS)—A hint of how far the British Government is prepared to go to prevent the strong arm methods of the Fascist black shirts from becoming a.menace to peace and order was given the House of Commbns by Home Secre¬ tary Sii- John Gilmour. Assuring the House that he was not concerned with the merits of Fascism, he announced the government would no longer tolerate vio¬ lence and if necessary the police would attend air political meetings in force. In the course of a debate on Fascism spokes¬ men for all parties made common cause in expressing unanimous hostility to Sir Os¬ wald Mosley's Fascists.

a succession of retreats ... if all this had happened the Jews of Germany would not need to worry. But now?
Now they arc going to be slaughtered, j The Nazi navigators are beginning to see the cliffs ahead. They know they cannot, avoid striking- them.' They know the impact is going to be terrific. Thei shock may even throw them out. Before that debacle comes the Jews are to be saddled with the blame. The anti-Jewish campaign no longer goes on padded shoes. The Nazis are pounding the big drum in calling the masses to.the pogroni.
If the Nazis were not hampered by the clauses of the Versailles treaty; if they could openly inaugurate a re-armament prpgra:ni; if the money for the construc¬ tion of a gigantic air fleet, for the manu¬ facture of heavy artillery, for tanks, for millions of machine guns were available if they could come out openly with their plan for the conquest and colonization of the Soviet Ukraine; if France were not suspicious that Alsace-Lorraine, the Northem industrial region and Belgium would soon follow the Ukraine ih the event of a successful war with Moscovy; if the British tories, instead of secretly upholding Hitler's hands, would come out openly wJth a designation of the Fuehrer as the divinely appointed destroyer of the great socialist structure in the Soviet Union; if England with Italy and France would give Germany and Japan carte blanche to drown the workers* fatherland in a sea of blood; ,if the great powers.] were not so deeply apprehensive that the projected Japanese-German attack on Russia will not turn into a world-con- Hagration almost immediately, an eventu¬ ality which would lead to the mobiliza¬ tion of millions of workers who desire nothing more ardently than to have arms in their hands; if all this were not true, the Jews of Germany, would not need to worry. There would he prosperity in that event in the German Reich and no¬ body would pay the slightest attention to the handful of non-Aryans. In fact the Jews would be invited to join in the general new prosperity. And many of tbcQi would, I am sure, gratefully and enthusiastically cooperate with the blood¬ hounds. But now?
Now the German Jews are doomed. And this time they know it. They are being told every day that it will not be long now until the long knives uf the brown fiends come into play. The Nazi state must inevhabty crack to pieces if Hitler is not allowed to go to war. In spite of all the hullabaloo, the torchlight parades, the monster demonstrations, the resounding speeches, the Juden-Hetze. the
ket place, not even after a year of cease¬ less, unchallenged agitation-on the part of the all-powerful-Nazi propaganda ap¬ paratus.
Just because the workers have not re¬ sponded to the murderous appeals of the Nazi Fuehrers, just because the dissatis¬ faction in the Sturm-Ahteilungcn is growing by, leaps and bounds, j list be¬ cause the Gewerkschaften repudiated the Nazi candidates, just because, the Nazi leaders feel the knife on their own throats, they are going to try and turn that knife and cut Jewish throats. Streicher's ritual murder issue of "Der Stuermer" is the opening signal. And lest American Jews go on thinking, as many have been thinking, that Hitler himself is' essentially a decent fellow and that only hia associates are bloodthirsty sadists, the official "Angriff" and "Voel-' kisclie Beobachter" are joining "Der Stuermer" in summoning the German people to gather material against the Jews. This is the first step to justify a pogrom. When the pogrom is finally an accomplished fact the Fuehrers can blandly tell the world that it was a case of spontaneous indignation on the part of the German masses, exasperated and driven to bloody revenge by the publi¬ cation of Jewish crimes.
We all know about the torture in sound-proof cellars of the Brown Houses, wc know about the inconceivable sadism of Nazi beasts in the concentration camps; about the wholesale sodomy to which young prisoners are subjected about the special instruments used to crush men's testicles, a device borrowed from the Italian black-shirts; about groups of prisoners, pacifist-intellectuals preferably, being forced to masturbate at the point of Nazi revolvers; Dr. Scger who has just escaped from Oraiiienbauni camp has made us familiar with the in conceivable horrors of the cement coffins we know ho\v the Nazis have consciously imleaslied the basest instincts, hpw they whip people up to the bloodthirstiness of tigers, but tliat so diabolical a piece of rotten bestiality vvas possible as Goebbels and Streicher are now planning, that we had not expected. I If wc had not learned from the events in Austria, where little man Dollfuss, blessed by the Pope, after turuing heavy artillery on the women and children of the workers, received the bourgeois world's acclaim when he mounted on a pile of corpses, that Fascism will have no mercy, give no quarter, and will not hesitate to use the most inhuman cruelty to safeguard a collapsing eco nomic system, we ought to learn from what is on the cards in Germany.
There will be no ofiicial protests from
the other powers against the crime the

We want to in¬ vestigate communistic activities and find where the money comes from" Repre¬ sentatives Taylor and Jenkins, ^tepubli- can members of the committee, also urged the House to grant the $'10,000. "the gentleman ought to be ashamed bf himself."'- BY PIERRE VAN PAASSEN Seven Arts Staff Writer in. thi.'i article, Pierre Van Paassen,\ noted foreign correspondent, analyses the future of German Jezvry. "Dis¬ astrously bad" admits the Berliner Tage¬ blatt. If Adolf Hitler had succeeded in ful¬ filling his prQmise of bread and well- being for the masses; if there really was an economic upswing; if the Nazi state could point, to a consolidation of' power, instead' of being forced to take the recent vote of the Gewerkschaften— the Nazi labor unions—as a smack in the face (Hitler's Vertrauungsinaenner [men of confidence], polled less than one-third of the votes) ; if there was but one single gleichgescbaltcte pres.s in spite of all this, the German working class, is not witt) the Nazis yet. So far they haven't heeded these blood appeals. "The German working class knows nothing of anti-Semitism" remarked the Manchester Guardian a year ago. The passive'attitude of the workers in the presence of the year-long hysterical Juden-Hetze shows Hitler and his associates that they have wasted their time, that the workers see through the Fuehrer's designs, that they see the fraudulent character of tlie issues he has raised, that they are not deceived German - American Congress Refuses to Endorse DAWA Boycott CLEVELAND (WNS)—Nazi con¬ trol nf German-American societies was revealed as not being as great as was believed when tlie third annual German- American Congress refused to give its .sanction to the" counter-boycott agaiiisl the Jews organized by the DAW.\ on the ground that it was "economically un¬ sound with all the possibilities of becom¬ ing a racket." The Congress also re¬ fused to scat dcrcgatcs of the DAWA but allowed them to remain 111 the con¬ vention hall. The Congress also called on the United States Govern¬ ment to "take effective steps to stop the boycott of German goods." Assuring the House that he was not concerned with the merits of Fascism, he announced the government would no longer tolerate vio¬ lence and if necessary the police would attend air political meetings in force. In the course of a debate on Fascism spokes¬ men for all parties made common cause in expressing unanimous hostility to Sir Os¬ wald Mosley's Fascists. LEVIN MEMORIAL FUND The Tifereth Israel Sisterhood of the l-'ast Broad Street Temple has established a memorial fund in memory of the late Louis Levin, and all those who wish to contribute to tins fund may do so by sending same to Mrs. Morris Polster, 2548 Sherwood Road. a succession of retreats ... if all this had happened the Jews of Germany would not need to worry. In spite of all the hullabaloo, the torchlight parades, the monster demonstrations, the resounding speeches, the Juden-Hetze. the ket place, not even after a year of cease¬ less, unchallenged agitation-on the part of the all-powerful-Nazi propaganda ap¬ paratus. There will be no ofiicial protests from the other powers against the crime the (Contimted on page 2) In a recent drive conducted by Schon¬ thal Center in cooperation with the Junior Hadassah Bazaar, which received one- fourth of the amount raised, Schonthal Center sent in the largest amount and led the first nine Centers in making their returns for. the benefit of the German refugees who are being re-trained in Palestine.
