Laski Says Jews Cannot Expect Their
Problems to Take Precedence
Over World Peace
President Roosevelt would be pleased and elated could he biit witness the re¬ action of the business men of Columbus lo the advertising solicitation for the program of "The United Jubilee" to be given at Memorial Hall Wednesday, Jan¬ uary 2,'!, ]f)3!j. The president would liavc ample reason to be delighted because, according to the enthusiastic and Indus trious ladies of the Ivreeyoh Society who are in charge of the program, for the first time since 1930 the merchants.are responding graciously and anxiously, all of which tends to indicate a return to the prosperity and happiness for which the "good old days" were noted and which the president is earnestly striving to re¬ call.
For the past two weeks, under the guiding hand of Mrs. Samuel Brief, eight ladie.^ of the Ivreeyoh group, all of whom arc past-matrons in the art of, advertis-
United Jubilee Committee Asks Your Co-operation
LONDON (WNS) — Opposing a move for the adoption of a resolution I)rotcsting again.^t the recent League of Nations' report on the Saar, Neville La.ski, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jcw9, told the fortnightly meeting of the Board that Jews cannot expect the Jcwi.sh qucstioii to take prece¬ dence in world diplomacy when the peace of Europe hangs by a thread. He ex pressed the opinion that the nations of the world will not jeopardize'the peace of the world because of the Jewish proh lem which they regard as only one of the many confronting them, Various speakers . insisted that the Board take some , action to obtain additional con^
cessions for the Jews of the Saar and took sharp issue with Laski's position on Austrian Jewry, he having declared on the authority of an vmidcntilicd but im¬ portant personage that the Austrian gov¬ ernment was making efforts to remove all causes for Jewish complaint. The Board, however, tabled further action on lioth issues. In tlie course of a lengthy addrcs.s Laski drew a black picture of the situation of the Jews of Germany, Po¬ land and the Baltic lands and defended himself against charges that he was an assimilationist. He also warned the Bal¬ tic nations that their discrimination against Jews would cost them heavy economic losses.
Many Jews of Saar to T^ave Annual B'nai B'rith Election
Before Plebiscite
SAARBRUECKEN (WNS) — The groat majority of Jewish residents in the Saar, entitled to one year's protection from persecution under the terms of the Franco-German agreement, will not avail themselves of this privilege, but will quit the Saar before the January 13 plcbiscus which is expected to return this region to Germany. This became known when Chief Rabbi Ruelf announced that he would leave for Palestine on January 1 Dr. Ruelf's announcement was followed by similar statements from hundreds of Jews who arc making ready to get out of the Saar before January 13.
Will Take Place Next Thursday Evening
"It is the purpose of the Council of Jewish Youth Or¬ ganizations to see that each and every Jewish group in the city has some sort of booth or con¬ cession at "The United Jubilee" the night of Wednesday, Janu¬ ary 23, 193S, and we have beeii working diligently to see that no organization is overlooked. However, because of the great' amount of detail which this gi¬ gantic Hebrew School Benefit places, upoii us, some eroup ar groups may have been uninten¬ tionally overlooked. If stich is the case, we would be deeply ap¬ preciative if any group that falls in this category would es¬ tablish immediate contact with the sponsoring body.

CINCINNATI (WNS) — On the ground that "the election of delegates to a session of the American Jewish Con¬ gress is exclusively the concern of that body," the B'nai B'rith, in a letter from its president, Alfred M.' Cohen, to Ber¬ nard S. Deutsch, president of the Ameri¬ can Jewish Congress, announced that it would not, participate in the elections, nor woxild it name representatives to act for it on the non-partisan election board arranging for the elections. Mr. Cohen pointed out that B'nai B'rith's partici- patiop in the election board would "con¬ fuse the mind of the Jewish public into believing that the session of tlic Ameri¬ can Jewish Congress, to which the. dele¬ gates are elected, transcends the Ameri¬ can Jewish Congress and is to be a meet ing of all the bodies represented in the election board."

journed here after adopting a resolution denouncing the Jews as "nefarious" and expressing readiness "to combat them." The adoption of this resolution was.pre¬ ceded by an anti-Semitic demonstration in which delegates from Rumania, Switz¬ erland, Holland, Norway, Denmark, Greece, Poland and France .participated. The Fascists from Italy, Ireland, Portu¬ gal, Czechoslovakia and Belgium tried vainly to hold the anti-Semites in check. Eugene Coselschi, Italian Fascist, who presided, and General Eoin O'Duffy, leader of the Irish' Blue Shirts, tried to show that the Jews were among .the most loyal citizens of their countries, and actually succeedcii in forcing, through a resolution declaring that the "Jewish question cannot be converted into a uni-, Ver.sal campaign of hatred against tbe Jews."
The passage of this resolution; how¬ ever, precipitated such an uproar of pro¬ test and embittered anti-Semitic senti¬ ments that the chairman .reluctantly per- ittcd a modified resolution to be voted when he" realized that any other action would result in the break-up of the con¬ gress. The amended resolution reads: "Consideriiig that in many ¦ places cer¬ tain groups of Jews are, installed in con¬ quered countries, 'exercising in an open and, occult manner an influence injurious to the material and moral interests of tlie country which | harbors Ihem, consti¬ tuting a sort' of state within a. state, profiting by all benefits a^id refusing all duties; considering that they have fur¬ nished and are inclined to furnish, ele¬ ments conducive to international revolu¬ tion which would be destructive to the idea of patriotism and Christian civiliza¬ tion, the conference denounces the ne¬ farious action of these elements and is ready to combat them." Another reso¬ lution recommended that each country treat thejewish question on the principle of namial sovereignty. . Notwithstanding the inexpUcable ah-- sence of Sir Oswald Mosley, leader, of the British blackshirts, and representa¬ tives of German and Austrian Fascists, the .congress was not lacking In anti- Semitic speeches. With the support of the Danish and Norwegian Fascists, Jan Motza, member of the Rumanian Irpn Guard, who was among" those arrested last year after an Iron Guard gang assas¬ sinated Premier Ion Duca, gave vent to a lengthy anti-Jewish tirade. In the coui*se of his outburst he said thq Jews "are making our life impossible in Ru mania. They inspire capitalistic greed and egoism and control the commerce, Industry and press of our country. Our people are not masters of their own cul¬ ture and public opinion." After linking Free Masonry with the Jews in an al legcd "plot against Christian civilization," Motza warned that "Fascism cannot ig¬ nore the Jewish problem because it men¬ aces the Fascist order'* and demanded war on Jewry and Masonry.
Although Italian Fascism Is not anti Semitic, the congress was convened at the behest of the Italian government. The congress proclaimed that. Fascism will become universal and voted to meet an¬ nually. The next congress will be held in one of the Scandinavian countries.
