"COMIVIUNAL SPIRIT" SUB¬ JECT OP SERMON, FRI¬ DAY, MA RCli 4TH, AT E. UROAD ST. TEMPLE
Never Satisfled
Some people arc never 9atisfiu<l, coin- mcnfcd A. S. Mcgida, Ziuinst ftinctioii- ary. . ?>
"Docs it happen to remind yuii of a story, inaybc, Mr. McKiilaF" wc askccL "It docs," came the rcsijonsc. Goldstein wa.s one of the favorite cu.s- tonicrs of the EsB and Verg-sich restau¬ rant,
One day the owner of the eatery came to Goldstein and asked liim; "How do you like our service?"
"It's all right," said Goldstein, "but always you give two slices of bread."
The next day, the buss told the waiter to give Goldstein four slices. For a week, Goldstein contiiuied to patronize and to receive four slices of bread with his orders. , ,
At the cud of the week, the boss again approached Goldstein; "How do you like the service now, Mr. Goldstein?"
"Jt's all right/' returned Goldstein, "bnt. always yon give four slices of bread."
The buss instructed the waiter that hereafter, Goldstein must be given tight slices.
For the following week, Mr. Goldstein partook of eight slices of bread with his or<lcrs.
Then agiuin came the boss; "Mr. Gold¬ stein, how do you like it now?" Ajjain Goklstein retot-tcd: "S'all right, but al¬ ways yoil give eight slices!" The boss thereupon instructed tbe waiter to give Goldstein a whole loaf of bread here¬ after, but "cut tile loaf in two."
The next day, the boss agaiii. queried Goldstein: "Now are ybu satisfied?"
"It's all right," returticd Goldstein, "but you've gone back agjiin to give two slices."
Those DilTcnng Neumuns For that saga you arc contemplating to write of the American Jewish family, I invite your attention to the case of the . Neuniaus. You know Kmaniiel Neuman, of course, proniirient iiionist, niember of the Jewish Agency, and most significantly of all, one of that bare handful of in¬ fluential Jews who are genuhicly or tliodox ill their religious practices.
And then you have heard of Dr. Henry Neuman, associate of Felix Adler, ethi cal culture leader, who will some day inherit the mantle of chief leadership of the Ethical Culture .So¬ cieties, as the successor bf. Felix Adler. Enianucl and Henry are first cousins, llotli have risen to positions of eminence. ISitiiinuel yill not think of riding on Sat¬ urday, lieury will not ride either—thai is, if there is no street car, subway, taxi- cabs or automobiles, running, A Ghust Dies Even shadowy' ghosts, it appears, are unsafe, when somebody spills the beans. There is Captain Abraham Ginsberg, for example.
The captain is a member of the Army Intelligence Service. He 1 is a brilliant young fellow^iid justly looked forward to—O'well, someday maybe he would be a colonel. • '
But that's all past now. Captain Gins¬ berg realizes that any future for him in the army is now unthinkable. And why, do you suppose? All because. Secretary of War Pat Hurley's recent speeches- seemed so good —so fiill of wit.
It happened this way. Those Wash¬ ington newspapermen are very smart, aiid one of them just started wondering, when Secretary Hurley's speeches all of a sudden, got so good.
He started i>rying around, and pretty soon, he announced that the specclics of Secretary Hurley were being written by I Captain Ginsberg, The Secretary was in a rage, and Captain Ginsberg was in a rage. Captain Ginsberg made the newspaperman who had iprinted the story, admit that it was not he who had tipped liim ofT.
But' the newspaperman's admission failed to satisfy Secretary Hurley, He was convinced that Captain G-insberg had broken the news to the paper. .
Strange, isn't it? The Secretary is not enraged by having. Captain Ginsberg write his speeches for him, but is en¬ raged, that others should know of it, Waldman Tells Several They were dining Dr. 'Morris Wald¬ man of the American "Jewish Commit- , tee, at Detroit the other day. Waldman some years ago was the head of thp Jewish Wei fare Federation of Detroit, and the chairman introducing him, in a highly laudatory siJcech, gave Waldman the credit for the establishment of. the - Jewish Welfare Fund.
Modestly Waldman refused to take the credit, maintaining that the success of the Federation was due to the combined efiforts of the Jewish leaders of the com¬ mnnity. It reminds mc of a story, said Waldman.
A deaf mute had been placed in a po¬ sition by the Bureau of the Handicapped conductwl by the New Vork Kehillah.
Three days later, the deaf mute re¬ turned Jobless, He wrote on a piece of paper: "Fired."
The nianager of the bureau, disap¬ pointed, wrote tniderneatli: "Why have you been fired?"
The deaf mute answered: "Drunken¬ ness,"
The manager took the pencil now and wrote: "Aren't you ashamed of your¬ self?"
The deaf mute answered: "I was not drunk; it was the employer."
Detroit and .Cemeteries The Secretary of the American Jew¬ ish Cttmmitlce, by the way, gave an odd reason for his continued attachment to Detroit. He explained that he had in¬ vested his reserve funds in Detroit and „, lost tlieni there, "And so I have the kind of sentiment for Detroit that one feels tu the cemetery in which his dear (Continued on page 2)
Many individuals today claim that they can pray, feel and ex¬ perience llie joy of religion with¬ out the need of Con};rej^utions and Communal Organizations.
In hia sermon on "Communal Spirit" Friday evening, March iih, Kabbi Zclizer will put up a defense for community organi¬ zation whether it be in the form of Synagogue, Church or other form of activity.
What is the defense? What¬ ever it is, it must be a mighty strong and logical one to meet the attacks that arc hurled against organized groups, espe¬ cially religion, from every whik of life.

Membership Drive Making
Fine Progress
The enthusiasm displayed and results obtained t<i date in the niembersliip drive of llic Tifereth Israel Synagogue lead¬ ing toward the formation of the class of new memhers to be known as the "Rabbi Zclizer Class," has been very gratifying, was the information conveyed to the CI[ko.n'HUi reiircscnlative this morning hy Mr. Frank V^ Bayer, general cliair¬ man of the drive.
Temporarily handicapped by the ab- sente nf Harry Gilbert, captain of the Red. Team who is now spending a short vacation in Florida, this group has never¬ theless been striving laboriously with re¬ sults whicli has been more than satisfac¬ tory.
¦ Dr. Abranismi, Captain of the Blue Team, notwithstanding his extensive prac¬ tice, has worked diligently in guiding the destiny of his team witli results so evenly matched with the Red Team so as to leave the outcome of the race between these two teams for membership suprem¬ acy a matter of great interest to their friends and the Jewish community of Columhus.
At the present time the Red Team is leading? by a majority of five memhers. To date the drive has been featured by ihc uutstuntliiig work and enthusiastic co-operation of Mr.'Sam Berman, West Side Clathier, Sol Roth apd Rabbi Solo¬ mon Uivilin. h\ connection \vitli the latter, it is appropriate to stale that in¬ advertently the name of Rabbi, Rivlin was omitted as a team" worker. As in the past, his ardent endeavors usually ex¬ pressed themselves in actual results which have been outstanding in this tnem- bersliip campaign.
Although associated with the local branch of the Sun Life Insnrance Com¬ pany Rabbi Rivlin has given liberally of his time and energy to assure the success of lliis big effort, and thereby doing full honor to his colleague, Rabbi Nathan Zclizer.'
.Anyone hitercsted ¦ in information of any kind concerning membership in this Conservative Center, is requested to coni- n-.mucate with Mr. Bay^-r at ADS-I^S or any member fif the numerous team workers. '

Important Hebrew School
Parents'Meeting Called for
Sundayy 2 P. M.
A very Important meeting of the par¬ ents -of the pupils of the Hebrew school is being called for this Sunday. Feb¬ ruary 2yth, This meetiiig has a doiihlt purpose: First, to inform the parents who are the ones to be most concerned with the interests of this institution, of the present situation of tbe school; sec¬ ond, to test the loyalty of the parents and their appreciation of the work done foi their children.
It is true- that the Hebrew school is not a matter of concern for the, parents alone but for the entire community as well. The officers and the workers are in full cognizance of this fact. Their devotion and zeal to the interests of this institution are good evidence td prove it. It is also true that all the right thinking members o this community are in accord with it, which is also proven by the full- hearted support this instjitntion has been getting from theni., At the' same time it is not more than right to expect that when this institution issues a call fur aid, whether material or nioral, the parents should be the first to heed that call and respond to it cheerfully and will¬ ingly. .
The committee in charge of this meet¬ ing is thoroughly convinced in the good results of it. They believe that the re- siKJUse of the parents will he a source of encouragement for the workers to in¬ crease their efforts pii behalf of this in¬ stitution.
This meeting is called under the aus¬ pices of the officers of the Hebrew school and the Ivreeyoh, The ladies of the Ivereeyoh will also serve as host¬ esses to entertain and serve the parents.
The meeting is calle<l for 2 :00 P. M„ at the auditorium of the Hebrew school.
