7 wanted to Bring out the miraculous nature of this incredible Exodus, which has exceeded
even our most optimistic hopes and dreams.' 'Strut,'Cohen adds, 'I want to show the juxtaposition of the two cultures, with these heroic Hews leaving (Rjissia Behind and coming home
anew to Israel'
To a large extent, it seems that Cohen has succeeded. Mis recent wor\\ofart shows Russian
Hews leaving BehindSt. (Basils Cathedral, located just outside the (Kremlin and a symBol of
(Russia, andcrossing a Body ofwaterBefore entering into Jerusalem's Old City.
"The white silhouettes of these emigrants are a symbol of their 'non-persona stains as(Russian
Hews,' Cohen explained, 'however, when they finally enter into our homeland, they are sun as
real people again.'
Cohen has estaBGsheda nationalreputation forhis meticulous workjxt graphic design and
illustration. This past year, his wprkjwasfeatured in ashow of'^our Contemporary CaBgra-
phers' at the (R§nvnckJ^allery oftheSmithsonian Institution, and his contemporary illustrated
manuscripts arenowon display atthe OfathlDafota Museum of Art. Later this spring, his

Cohen went on to explain that the crossing of the sea in his picture is symbolic of the ancient
Israelites crossing the (RedSea thousands of years ago. "This crossing of the sea is no less
miraculous,'insisted the artist. Me pointedout that the Jews are leaving the 'night' of the
(Russian exile to the 'day' pf 'Eretz yisroel.
These Hews reject the redstarofthe atheist state and are attracted to the Star of (David atop
the Tower of (David,'Cohen explained; 'And what is the (Magen (Dovid- the Shield of (David?'
heasfa and then answers. 'It is the,§-d of Israel, who protected (David and Mis people Israel
always. (May Me protect us and the incoming exiles from modern day tyrants and tribulations
as Me did in the days of our very first Exodus.'
