Jewish Draft Exemption
Protested In Germany
BONN (JTA) - A number
of young West German army
recruits have recently pro^
tested a decision by the Defense Ministry to exempt
Jews from the draft if their
parents or even grandparents suffered under the
Nazis.' '■■[ , .v>. 7; ■•■
Former Defense Minister
Rupert Scholz — who was
recently relieved of his position in a governmental
shakeup—made the decision
last year. He told jounalists
that protest I tetters keep
coming into his office, but he
added that the decision,
while very difficult to make,
was the correct one.
"This is a very sensitive
issue," he said, "and I felt I
had the duty to: take into
consideration the arguments
of the Jewish community.
Israelis Give Performance In Hebrew
On Moscow Stage
TEL AVIV (JTA) — A play has just been performed on a
Soviet Stage in Hebrew, for the first time since the Habiman
theater left Moscow more than 60 years ago. A group of 15
young students from the Bet Zvi Stage and Film-Acting
School in Ramat Gan, led by their teacher, Nina Mikhoels,
went to Moscow to participate in an international festival of
drama students. They performed a Hebrew version of Equus,
the British play by Peter Sheffer, directed by Ofira Henning,
and were the only group allowed to give two performances, in
addition to a sold-out dress rehearsal.
Baker Says Balance Of Power
In Middle East Has Been Altered
Italy May Upgrade PLO's Status

ROME (JTA) — Italy will soon upgrade the Palestine
Liberation Organization's diplomatic status, the PLO representative here said in a recent published interview. "The
question has been under discussion and now we are in the
, phase of defining the new terminology," Nemer Hammad
told the newspaper La Repubblica.
WASHINGTON. (JTA) —
The recent Soviet sale of 10
to 15 Sukhoi-24 D bombers to
Libya has altered the military balance in the Middle
East, Secretary of State
James Baker said last week.
He added that he has "no
reason to disagree" with the
argument that the sale of the
planes, with a 1,610-mile
radius, threatens Israel.
Baker was replying to
questions asked by Sen.
Jesse Helms (R-N.C), during testimony before the
Senate Foreign Relations
Committee.
Baker said the sale "says .
that when (the Soviets) talk
about wanting to be involved
in the Middle East peace
process, they are doing a
good job at talking but not in
supporting that talk with
their deeds.
"If they really wanted to
be helpful in the Middle
East, they would not be so
supportive of radical regimes like Libya generally,"
he said.
Baker said the United
States would also welcome
Soviet restoration of full
diplomatic relations with Israel, as well as the use of its
influence witji Syria to end
the violence in Lebanon as
well as activities of radical
, Palestine Liberation Organization factions based in
Syria.
The situation in Lebanon is
"very, very intractable,"
Baker said, but he called the
Arab-Israeli conflict the
most intractable foreign
policy dispute:
